School behavior of children in kinship care.

This paper is based on the first comprehensive study of the health and educational status of children in kinship care, an increasingly frequent arrangement where children are placed in the care of relatives, mostly following neglect or abuse. Questionnaires were completed by teachers of 75% of the 374 school-age children in kinship care in one city, and additional information was obtained from caseworkers, caregivers, and school records. Compared to classroom peers, children in kinship care had poor study habits and attention and concentration skills. Other common problems included overactive,

Twelve-year follow-up of children exposed to alcohol in utero.

Eighty-two women who were consuming alcohol while pregnant attended a special clinic at the University Central Hospital, Helsinki with the aim of reducing heavy drinking during pregnancy. The children born to these women were followed up regularly. During their preschool years the children were assessed to have fetal alcohol syndrome, fetal alcohol effects, alcohol-related neurodevelopmental disorder, pre- and/or postnatal growth retardation, or they were assessed to have normal cognitive and somatic growth. Of the original children, 70 of 82 could be traced at the age of 12 years. Through sem

How Returning Aggregate Research Results Impacts Interest in Research Engagement and Planned Actions Relevant to Health Care Decision Making: Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Collection of patient-reported outcomes measures (PROs) may augment clinical data and inform health research, improving care, yet approaches to sustaining interest among patient cohorts in research participation are needed. One approach may involve returning aggregate research results (ARRs), which may help patients contextualize personal experiences, prompt conversations with providers or family, and encourage information seeking. This model has been demonstrated for Web-based patient-centered registries. Studies with clinical cohorts may further elucidate the model, its impacts o

Social mechanisms of maternal health service use among pregnant women facing intersecting vulnerabilities in Ethiopia: a cross-sectional study.

INTRODUCTION: Maternal health services, such as antenatal care (ANC) and institutional delivery, may reduce maternal and child health burdens. However, disparities in service coverage persist across Ethiopia. Pregnant women experiencing intersecting vulnerabilities face particularly significant barriers to accessing care. Understanding how social contexts shape maternal care-seeking behaviours can provide valuable insights into supporting underserved pregnant women, offering guidance for future research and practice. This study examines the influence of social and gender norms, as well as spou

The mediating role of personality functioning impairment between childhood maltreatment and adult mental health problems.

Background: Childhood maltreatment is a critical societal and public health concern significantly associated with adult mental health outcomes. Recent research suggests that impaired personality functioning may mediate this association. Objective: The aim of the present study was to examine personality functioning impairment (PFI) as a potential mediator between different types of childhood maltreatment and self-reported adult mental health problems in a large community-based sample. In addition, this study sought to identify the domains and subdomains of PFI that have the strongest mediating e

Establishing a multidisciplinary specialist centre for fetal alcohol spectrum disorders-Lessons learned from a model project in Germany.

BACKGROUND: Inadequate coordination between relevant professionals hampers the provision of appropriate care for individuals with fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD). Integrated, multidisciplinary care is thus urgently required. Hence, we aimed at establishing the first university-bound, interdisciplinary specialist centre for FASD in Germany, systematically collecting data on its utilisation and evaluation by attendees. METHODS: After our centre started to provide consultation and support services in July 2019 until May 2021, we collected 233 questionnaires on the centre's utilisation (in

Actions and Adaptations Implemented for Maternal, Newborn and Child Health Service Provision During the Early Phase of the COVID-19 Pandemic in Lagos, Nigeria: Qualitative Study of Health Facility Leaders.

BACKGROUND: The early phase of the COVID-19 pandemic led to significant disruptions in provision of maternal, newborn, and child health (MNCH) services, especially in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) with fragile health systems, such as Nigeria. Measures taken to 'flatten the curve' such as lockdowns, curfews, travel restrictions, and suspension of public services inadvertently led to significant disruptions in provision of essential health services. In these countries, health facility leaders are directly responsible for driving changes needed for service delivery. OBJECTIVE: To expl

Few Differences in the Externalizing and Criminal History of Young Violent Offenders With and Without Autism Spectrum Disorders.

Autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) are known to be associated with an increased risk of aggression and challenging behavior. In this study, we have mapped the externalizing history of a nationally representative cohort of young violent offenders with ASD, compared with offenders without ASD. Two hundred and sixty-nine violent offenders were assessed for prevalence of ASD, and participated in a thorough assessment of previous externalizing problems and criminal history. Twenty-six offenders met consensus clinical DSM-IV criteria for ASD and they were compared to offenders without ASD from the sam

Pathophysiology of neonatal transition and meaningful measures for the initial stabilisation of extremely premature neonates.

This report discusses the physiological aspects of neonatal transition from breathing liquid to air. Further, we discuss reasonable medical interventions to actively assist a gentle transition, and focus on team aspects of preparing both the perinatal team and parents for the challenging situation of preterm labour and delivery. Our aim is to critically evaluate current concepts on the physiology of neonatal transition and the current assessment of the newborn infant, to present means to facilitate non-traumatic pulmonary aeration and ways to foster successful teamwork and professional parenta

Mercury intoxication and arterial hypertension: report of two patients and review of the literature.

Two children in the same household with symptomatic arterial hypertension simulating pheochromocytoma were found to be intoxicated with elemental mercury. The first child was a 4-year-old boy who presented with new-onset seizures, rash, and painful extremities, who was found to have a blood pressure of 171/123 mm Hg. An extensive investigation ensued. Elevated catecholamines were demonstrated in plasma and urine; studies did not confirm pheochromocytoma. Mercury levels were elevated. These findings prompted an evaluation of the family. A foster sister had similar findings of rash and hypertens

Trajectories of depressive symptoms in foster youth transitioning into adulthood: the roles of emotion dysregulation and PTSD.

Foster youth often experience considerable adversity both in and out of foster care, including histories of abuse and/or neglect, and further stressors within the foster system. These adverse experiences often occur at key developmental periods that can compromise emotional functioning and lead to posttraumatic symptomatology, including posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and emotion dysregulation. In the face of difficult histories and ongoing mental health challenges, youth transitioning into adulthood may be particularly vulnerable to increases in depressive symptoms. We explored the traje
