Assessment of Therapeutic Responses Using a Deep Neural Network Based on 18F-FDG PET and Blood Inflammatory Markers in Pyogenic Vertebral Osteomyelitis.

Background and Objectives: This study investigated the usefulness of deep neural network (DNN) models based on 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography (FDG-PET) and blood inflammatory markers to assess the therapeutic response in pyogenic vertebral osteomyelitis (PVO). Materials and Methods: This was a retrospective study with prospectively collected data. Seventy-four patients diagnosed with PVO underwent clinical assessment for therapeutic responses based on clinical features during antibiotic therapy. The decisions of the clinical assessment were confirmed as 'Cured' or 'Non-cur

A Peculiar 18 F-FDG Spinal Uptake Helps Diagnosis and Effective Treatment of Polymyalgia Rheumatica : "The Corset Sign".

Polymyalgia rheumatica is the most common inflammatory rheumatic disease in elderly people, usually develops in patients older than 50 years, more frequently in females. An emerging imaging tool in the diagnostic workup of this condition is whole-body PET/CT, which allows an overall assessment of the articular and extra-articular structures involved.

Athletic Osteitis Pubis Detected on 18 F-FDG PET/CT.

A 37-year-old male personal trainer presented with debilitating groin pains, fever, and night sweats. Enlarged inguinal lymph nodes were noticed during physical examination, and blood tests showed elevated erythrocyte sedimentation rate and C-reactive protein. 18 F-FDG PET/CT excluded lymphoma and other malignancy but showed intense FDG uptake at the pubic symphysis and cortical erosions of the pubic bones on CT. The patient was diagnosed with osteitis pubis, an inflammatory condition of the pubic symphysis commonly seen in athletes. Treatment with anti-inflammatory drugs was initiated. Within

Articular 18Fluorodeoxyglucose Uptake Is Associated With Clinically Assessed Swollen Joint Count in Patients With Rheumatoid Arthritis.

OBJECTIVE: Examination and conventional radiography of joints are unable to precisely evaluate and measure disease activity in rheumatoid arthritis (RA). We quantified joint inflammation using 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) positron emission tomography (PET)/computed tomography (CT) in people with RA to determine if PET-derived uptake variables were correlated with RA disease activity measures. METHODS: We cross-sectionally studied 34 patients with RA in a substudy of the Rheumatoid Arthritis Study of the Myocardium (RHYTHM). All patients underwent 18F-FDG-PET scanning with CT for attenuation c

18F-FDG PET/CT Findings in a Rare Case of Paraneoplastic Vestibulocerebellar Syndrome Associated With Isolated Antiamphiphysin Antibodies.

Paraneoplastic cerebellar degeneration (PCD) is an immune-mediated neurological disease characterized by adaptive immune response against onconeural antigens physiologically expressed in the cerebellum. It is characterized by presence of highly specific onconeural autoantibodies such as anti-Yo, anti-Hu, anti-Ri, and anti-Ma2 in the serum and cerebrospinal fluid as diagnostic biomarkers. Antiamphiphysin autoantibody-related paraneoplastic encephalitis is a less commonly seen autoimmune neurological disorder usually presenting as stiff person syndrome. We present an unusual case of isolated ant

A neuroendocrine tumor within an anterior mediastinal mature teratoma: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Mature teratomas are benign germ cell tumors. On rare occasions, they have been associated with somatic malignancies and are termed rare germ cell tumors with a somatic-type malignancy (GCTSM). Mature teratomas commonly comprise adenocarcinomas; only seven previous cases of mature teratomas with neuroendocrine tumors have been reported to date. Here, we report a patient with a neuroendocrine tumor whithin a mature teratoma. CASE PRESENTATION: A 26-year-old man visited our department complaining of chest tightness. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CT) scans showed a strongly

Radiographic Response of Solitary Plasmacytomas After Conformal Radiotherapy May Be Delayed: Outcomes in the 3D Era.

OBJECTIVE: Although recurrence rates after radiotherapy for solitary plasmacytoma (SP) are well established, little is known about how SP responds radiographically, as most historical patients were treated in the 2D era. We evaluated the response to radiotherapy among SP patients staged and treated with 3D techniques, including proton therapy, which has not yet been previously reported. METHODS AND MATERIALS: Between 2007 and 2021, 15 SP patients (4 extramedullary, 11 bone) staged with 3D imaging and bone marrow evaluation were consecutively treated with definitive radiotherapy. The best resp

18F-FDG PET/CT in a Patient With Matrix-Producing Carcinoma of the Breast.

A 47-year-old woman presented with a large mass in the upper inner quadrant of the left breast. 18F-FDG PET/CT revealed a low-density left breast mass with heterogeneous ring-like 18F-FDG uptake. Core needle biopsy of the tumor revealed a rare subtype of metaplastic breast carcinoma, matrix-producing carcinoma. The tumor size slightly decreased after 6 cycles of neoadjuvant chemotherapy with docetaxel and epirubicin. The left breast was entirely resected subsequently, and the matrix-producing carcinoma of the breast was ultimately diagnosed.

Lymphogranuloma Venereum Mimicking Lymphoma on FDG PET/CT.

A 42-year-old man presented with painless, left inguinal lymphadenopathy, which was suspicious of malignant lymphoma. Multiple left-sided foci of markedly increased metabolic activity were observed on PET/CT (SUVmax up to 22.3), located at the inguinal, iliac, and para-aortic lymph nodes along with small-sized right inguinal lymphadenopathy. Laboratory tests revealed increased inflammation markers and neutrophilic leukocytosis. Pathological examination from dissected inguinal lymph node was consistent with granulomatous disease. Infection by chlamydia trachomatis was made serologically establi

A Rare Case of Metastatic Solitary Fibrous Tumor (Hemangiopericytoma) of the Dura on 18F-FDG PET/CT.

Solitary fibrous tumor is a rare neoplasm of mesenchymal origin. It can arise in various locations, most commonly in the pleura. It encompasses a heterogeneous group of histological patterns with different biological behavior. In some cases, metastases occur, sometimes years after the initial diagnosis. We report a case of metastatic meningeal hemangiopericytoma, also called solitary fibrous tumor of the dura, exhibiting liver metastases and muscle metastases 5 years after resection and adjuvant radiotherapy of the primary tumor.

[Rapid Growing Anterior Mediastinal Leiomyosarcoma with Pericardial Infiltration:Report of a Case].

Primary mediastinal leiomyosarcoma is extremely rare, and few reports in the literature have described the clinical features of this malignancy. We report a case of a small anterior mediastinal leiomyosarcoma that showed rapid growth within a short period. An 85-year-old woman showed a small anterior mediastinal tumor on chest computed tomography (CT), three months prior to presentation. Contrast-enhanced chest CT revealed rapid tumor growth, and positron emission tomography/CT revealed significant 18-fluorodeoxyglucose uptake, suggestive of malignancy. Thoracoscopic tumor resection was perfor

Estimation of the net influx rate Ki and the cerebral metabolic rate of glucose MRglc using a single static [18F]FDG PET scan in rats.

Since accurate quantification of 2-deoxy-2-18F-fluoro-D-glucose ([18F]FDG) positron emission tomography (PET) requires dynamic acquisition with arterial input function, more practical semi-quantitative (static) approaches are often preferred. However, static standardized uptake values (SUV) are typically biased due to large variations in body weight (BW) occurring over time in animal studies. This study aims to improve static [18F]FDG PET SUV quantification by better accounting for BW variations in rats. We performed dynamic [18F]FDG PET imaging with arterial blood sampling in rats (n = 27) wi

Hypermetabolic Cerebral Metastases of Cardiac Myxoma on FDG PET/CT.

A 66-year-old woman with a history of surgical resection of left atrial myxoma 6 months ago presented with multiple brain lesions with MRI. An FDG PET/CT was performed for further evaluation. The images showed that cerebral tumors had variable and increased FDG uptake in general, and no other abnormal FDG-avid lesions were noted. The tumor of right occipital lobe was resected and confirmed as metastatic cardiac myxoma on histology.
