In order to investigate whether experimental material consisting of noise-exposed animals should be regarded as 'ears' or 'animals', a comparison was made between the permanent threshold shifts in the right and left ears in 53 groups of noise-exposed guinea-pigs, with 5 animals in each group. Guinea worm disease has been blamed for much disability and loss of productivity among farmers in Africa and South Asia. Many studies have tried to equate days lost in illness to monetary values. These attempts often overlook the process of disability in relation to farming patterns. This pilot effort uses a qualitative case study approach to learn about how Guinea worm can cause loss to farmers. The effects of mu- and delta-preferring agonists on adenylate cyclase activity have been investigated in vitro in homogenates of guinea pig cochleas. Dynamics of creatine kinase activity was studied in heart muscle, liver tissue, lymphatic glands, intestine and spleen of guinea pigs infected with pseudotuberculosis microbes. Clinico-pathological and parasitological studies have been performed on spontaneous and experimental coccidiosis in guinea pigs. Among 11,244 Hartley guinea pigs purchased from suppliers during 1968, 410 (3.6%) of the animals had diarrhea due to coccidiosis. The incidence rate was high in the spring and fall with a mortality rate of 14.4 per cent. A particularly high number of fatal cases were found in the spring. The effect of (-)-N6-phenylisopropyl adenosine (PIA), a metabolically stable P1-receptor agonist, was investigated on guinea-pig isolated trachea. The histamine H2-receptor in the guinea-pig urinary bladder was characterized by determining the effects of histamine and impromidine on contractions induced by electrical transmural stimulation (ETS). Brains from six clinically ill guinea pigs from various serial passages infected with brain homogenate from a patient with Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease were studied by light and electron microscopy. Saturable binding of (-)-3H codeine was found in the guinea pig medulla (KD = 5.6 x 10(-7) M, Bmax = 1.4 pmol/mg protein), whereas little stereospecific binding was detected (KD = 4.4 x 10(-5) M). We developed an animal model of Legionnaires' pneumonia to permit study of aerosol infection, pathogenesis, and pulmonary host defense mechanisms in this disease. Guinea pigs and rats were exposed in a nose-only inhalation facility for 30 min to an aerosol of Burlington serogroup 1 Legionella pneumophila. A retrospective review of gram-negative bacteraemia in Papua New Guinean adults revealed four cases of primary gram negative pneumonia over a two-year period. Patients with primary gram negative pneumonia constituted less than 1% of all pneumonias admitted to the medical ward. Pseudomonas pseudomallei, Haemophilus influenzae and Klebsiella pneumoniae were the aetiologic agents. Three of four patients died following a fulminant course. It is concluded that primary gram-negative pneumonia in Papua New Guinea is rare but carries a high mortality.

During the course of a survey of intestinal parasites among the inhabitants of villages along the Fly River in the Kiunga region of Papua New Guinea, eggs of a Strongyloides species were found in the feces of several persons.
