Nutritional Needs in Mental Healthcare: Study Protocol of a Prospective Analytic Observational Study Assessing Nutritional Status, Eating Behavior and Barriers to Healthy Eating in Psychiatric Inpatients and Outpatients Compared to Healthy Adults.

BACKGROUND: Mental disorders are often associated with unhealthy eating behaviors and metabolic comorbidities. This can result in reduced life expectancy and poorer quality of life in people with mental disorders. This study protocol describes an observational study that examines the nutritional status and eating behaviors of people with severe mental illness (SMI) and the need for psychiatric treatment who were between 18 and 65 years old. In addition, the study focuses on possible barriers for healthy eating that have not yet been examined in this population. METHODS: A total of 192 study p

Contrast-enhanced MR imaging of hand and finger joints in patients with early rheumatoid arthritis: do we really need a full dose of gadobenate dimeglumine for assessing synovial enhancement at 3 T?

PURPOSE: To investigate the diagnostic value of a half dose compared with a full dose of gadobenate dimeglumine in the assessment of synovitis or tenosynovitis in the wrist and finger joints in patients with early rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and a disease activity score greater than 3.2. MATERIALS AND METHODS: With institutional review board approval and informed consent, 57 patients with early RA underwent 3-T magnetic resonance (MR) imaging with two different doses of contrast media. The contrast enhancement was measured in inflamed synovial tissue at half dose (0.05 mmol per kilogram of body

Looking through different lenses at meeting places in disadvantaged Dutch neighbourhoods: A qualitative participatory study assessing needs, barriers and success elements for women with non-Western migration backgrounds and teenage girls.

OBJECTIVE: The living environment can significantly influence health negatively, particularly in disadvantaged neighbourhoods where risk factors and limited resources converge. Social cohesion and inclusive meeting places promote well-being, yet little is known about what makes these spaces accessible and meaningful for specific groups. This study explored how neighbourhood meeting places can better align with the needs of two often underrepresented groups: women with a non-Western migration background and teenage girls (12-18 years old), in four disadvantaged Dutch neighbourhoods. METHODS: A

Digital Mental Health Screening, Feedback, and Referral System for Teens With Socially Complex Needs: Protocol for a Randomized Controlled Trial Integrating the Teen Assess, Check, and Heal System into Pediatric Primary Care.

BACKGROUND: Teens with socially complex needs-those who face multiple and potentially overlapping adversities-are disproportionately affected by several barriers to mental health screening and treatment. Pediatric primary care (PPC) is a typically low-stigmatized setting for teens that is visited at least annually. As such, implementing digital mental health tools (DMH), as low-intensity treatments in PPCs may increase the reach of such tools for teens with socially complex needs. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate the Teen Assess, Check, and Heal (TeACH) System in comparison to a contro

Intraoperative assessment of sentinel lymph node by one-step nucleic acid amplification in breast cancer patients after neoadjuvant treatment reduces the need for a second surgery for axillary lymph node dissection.

PURPOSE: Sentinel lymph node (SLN) biopsy has been shown to be both accurate and feasible for women who receive neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC). Intraoperative assessment of SLN by frozen sections can produce false negative results. The aim of this study was to compare two different techniques of intraoperative assessment of SLN in breast cancer patients treated with NAC: frozen section (FS) and molecular assay (OSNA). METHODS: A multicenter cohort of 320 consecutive breast cancer patients treated with NAC between 2010 and 2014 was analyzed. FS was performed intraoperatively in 166 patients (H

Do all patients with hematologic malignancies and severe thrombocytopenia need prophylactic platelet transfusions? Background, rationale, and design of a clinical trial (trial of platelet prophylaxis) to assess the effectiveness of prophylactic platelet transfusions.

Although considerable advances have been made in many aspects of platelet transfusion therapy in the last 30 years, some areas continue to provoke debate, including the use of prophylactic platelet transfusions for the prevention of thrombocytopenic bleeding in patients with bone marrow failure. We have designed a randomized controlled trial to compare prophylactic platelet use with a threshold of a platelet count of 10 x 10(9)/L with no prophylaxis in adult thrombocytopenic patients with hematologic malignancies. The trial question is whether a no-prophylactic policy for the use of platelet t

Do We Have Sufficient Evidence to Derive Innovative Approaches to Assessing Unmet Need, Delivering Education on Bladder and Bowel Continence Health, and Providing a Better Environment for Joint Decision-Making? ICI-RS 2024.

CONTEXT: Improved continence outcomes are reliant on identification of unmet need, education delivery, and shared decision-making. The evidence base on which to derive innovative approaches in these areas was unclear. METHODS: A debate held at the International Consultation on Incontinence-Research Society meeting, held in Bristol in June 2024, considered ways to improve research requirements to advance these areas. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: Artificial intelligence solutions and digital approaches to healthcare are emerging at pace and offer possibilities to improve these three key areas but t

Complexity among people experiencing homelessness: A scoping review of definitions and measurement approaches.

People experiencing homelessness are often described as having "complex needs" for whom various health and housing interventions have been developed. However, there is no consensus on how this and similar terms are defined or measured. A prospectively registered scoping review was conducted to examine how "complexity" is defined and measured with people experiencing homelessness. Six academic databases were searched, along with several techniques for identifying grey literature and articles in unindexed journals. A total of 224 academic articles were included in the review (35 grey literature

Links Between Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD) With Aesthetic Components of Orthodontic Treatment Need Assessed by Orthodontic Patients or Orthodontists (IOTN-AC, IOTN-ACE) and Also With Its Risk Factors: An Epidemiological Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) is a type of obsessive-compulsive disorder that can adversely impact an individual's self-perception. It may influence both the demand for and results of orthodontic treatment, making it a significant concern. Research on BDD among orthodontic patients is scarce, controversial, and methodologically limited. Associations between BDD with IOTN-AC and IOTN-ACE have not been studied at all. Moreover, IOTN-ACE itself (even regardless of BDD) is not studied except in a very few articles. METHODS: The Yale-Brown Obsessive-Compulsive Scale modified

Post/preprocedural ratio of hemodynamically assessed aortic regurgitation index as a marker for the need for corrective measures during transcatheter valve replacement: A first confirmatory study in patients receiving a new generation transcatheter self-expandable prosthesis.

OBJECTIVES: We aimed to investigate the value of post/preprocedural aortic regurgitation index (ARI) ratio as a marker for more-than-mild aortic regurgitation (AR) after transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) and as an indication of the need for corrective measures, provided that the implantation depth was acceptable. BACKGROUND: Post/preprocedural ARI increases accuracy of residual AR assessment by considering hemodynamic status prior to TAVR. METHODS: ARI ratio was calculated in 70 patients undergoing TAVR. ARI ratios were defined as post/preprocedural ARI (ARI ratio 1), and as post

Examining the CDCynergy Event Assessment Tool: an investigation of the anthrax crisis in Boca Raton, Florida.

This paper examines the dependability of the Event Assessment Tool over time. The latter is part of a CD-ROM--Emergency Risk Communication CDCynergy--distributed primarily to public information officers in the United States by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The Event Assessment Tool is designed to aid emergency professionals in identifying the magnitude of a crisis event and to suggest appropriate actions to confront such a situation. Applied twice during the 2001 anthrax bioterrorism crisis in Boca Raton, Florida, the tool functioned in a binary manner by first indicating a m

Addressing the health needs of the homeless.

Several authors have alluded to the complex health needs of the homeless population in the UK. The correlation between homelessness and a wide range of health problems has been explored in the literature. This paper presents a literature review exploring the biological, psychosocial and sexual health needs of single homeless people. The relationship between health and homelessness is analysed in relation to theories of health inequalities, which suggest that being homeless may be both a cause and a consequence of ill health. The contemporary nurse can play a vital role in helping to overcome t

Current challenges and unmet medical needs in myelodysplastic syndromes.

Myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) represent a heterogeneous group of myeloid neoplasms that are characterized by ineffective hematopoiesis, variable cytopenias, and a risk of progression to acute myeloid leukemia. Most patients with MDS are affected by anemia and anemia-related symptoms, which negatively impact their quality of life. While many patients with MDS have lower-risk disease and are managed by existing treatments, there currently is no clear standard of care for many patients. For patients with higher-risk disease, the treatment priority is changing the natural history of the disease

Felt and expressed needs regarding occupational health services from the perspective of micro-, small and medium-sized enterprises: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: In the context of the changing need for health care and prevention due to climate, digital and demographic change, occupational health services are of enormous relevance, as many people can be reached. Of particular interest are the occupational health services in micro-, small- and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs), as smaller companies are experiencing an unequal distribution of resources. To optimise the implementation in MSMEs, the aim of this scoping review is to present an overview of the MSMEs' needs regarding occupational health services. METHODS: The literature search was

Unraveling unmet needs in ketogenic dietary services: An ERN EpiCARE survey.

The implementation and potential of ketogenic dietary therapies (KDTs) have changed over time. The organization of KDT services, the availability of multidisciplinary teams, resources and support for patients and families still vary widely around the world. This diversity is reflected by a lack of consistency in reported outcomes, optimization of using KDT and KDT compliance. To highlight the unmet needs for KDT services, the ERN EpiCARE Ketogenic Dietary Therapy Special Interest Group (KDT SIG) conducted an online survey on KDT implementation and utilization, addressing the following topics:
