Dorzolamide induces vasodilatation in isolated pre-contracted bovine retinal arteries.

The effect of the carbonic anhydrase inhibitor dorzolamide on vascular smooth muscle in pre-contracted bovine retinal arteries was examined. Ring segments of retinal arteries were placed in a small vessel myograph for measurement of contractile activity. The arteries were placed in a physiological saline solution. Vasoconstriction was induced by either 124 mM KCl (0.90 +/- 0.46 mN, n=34), 10(-4) M prostaglandin F2alpha (1.72 +/- 0.84 mN, n=10) or 10(-6) M norepinephrine (0.78 +/- 0.47 mN, n=6). Both KCl and prostaglandin F2alpha caused steady repeatable contractions but norepinephrine caused a

Optical Coherence Tomography-Based Differentiation of Nonarteritic Anterior Ischemic Optic Neuropathy and Central Retinal Artery Occlusion: Longitudinal Analysis of Inner Retinal Layer Thinning.

BACKGROUND: Nonarteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION) and central retinal artery occlusion (CRAO) are both causes of acute vision loss. When patients present within the first several weeks of symptom onset, clinical signs such as optic disc or inner retinal edema often allow differentiation. However, as time progresses and edema resolves, both diseases lead to optic atrophy and retinal thinning, sometimes making them difficult to distinguish. Clinical experience suggests that CRAO results in more significant thinning of the inner retinal layers, particularly the ganglion cell lay…

Exploring hyperbaric oxygen therapy for central retinal artery occlusion beyond 24 h: case report.

Central retinal artery occlusion (CRAO) is a rare emergency, often affecting individuals over 60, with risk factors such as hypertension, diabetes, and smoking. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT), classified as level IIb by the American Heart Association for CRAO, helps maintain retinal oxygenation during ischemic events by diffusing oxygen through choroidal capillaries. While HBOT appears promising for addressing various vision-threatening conditions, including retinal occlusions and diabetic macular edema, it has not been officially approved for these indications. A 70-year-old male presented …

A case of retinal ciliary artery obstruction complicated after nonarteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy.

BACKGROUND: Nonarteritic Anterior Ischemic Optic Neuropathy(NAION) results from disease of the small vessels supplying the anterior portion of the optic nerve, its exact cause remains unknown. The retinal Ciliary Artery Obstruction (CrAO), may be identified in one-third of normal eyes. This congenital vascular variant arises from the peripapillary choroid or directly from one of the short posterior ciliary arteries. Some literature had indicated a potential correlation between the occurrences of NAION and CrAO. CASE PRESENTATION: A 54-year-old male presented with a one-week history of visual

Central Retinal Artery Occlusion Associated with Myelin Oligodendrocyte Glycoprotein Antibody Disease: A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein antibody disease (MOGAD) is a more recently characterized neuroinflammatory condition which has been implicated with optic neuritis (ON). While the potential causes of central retinal artery occlusion (CRAO) are several, neuroinflammatory causes should not be excluded from the differential diagnosis. Our unusual case presents a patient with prior history of MOGAD-ON and venous stasis retinopathy (VSR) in their right eye, who, in their current presentation, developed a CRAO in their left eye. CASE PRESENTATION: A 43-year-old female with a histo…

Chronic central retinal artery occlusion: Clinical manifestations, ocular neovascular complications, and risk of stroke.

Central retinal artery occlusion (CRAO) is a vision-threatening emergency that can lead to chronic ischemic complications. This retrospective cohort study investigated clinical characteristics, neovascular complications, and stroke risk in patients with chronic CRAO defined as the post-acute phase state characterized by FA-confirmed persistent retinal ischemia ≥1 month after acute onset. We reviewed medical records of 570 eyes initially diagnosed with acute non-arteritic CRAO between September 2003 and December 2024, with 289 eyes meeting inclusion criteria. Chronic CRAO was defined as persist…

Branch retinal artery occlusion in a patient with COVID-19 infection: A case report.

We report here, a case of branch retinal artery occlusion (BRAO) in the left eye of a 76-year-old man that involved three arteries which was considered to be related to a COVID-19 infection due to high levels of blood cytokines and coagulation factors. Although the patient had hypertension and atherosclerosis, his hypertension had been well controlled for the past five years by regular antihypertensive medication. Twenty-five days after starting treatment with anti-inflammatory, anticoagulant and conservative therapy, the patient's biomarkers of inflammation and coagulation returned to normal …

Central Retinal Artery Occlusion after Peribulbar Injection of Triamcinolone Acetonide in Thyroid-associated Ophthalmopathy.

Central retinal artery occlusion (CRAO) is a form of acute ocular ischemic syndrome that causes visual loss. Timely treatment is of great importance for visual recovery, but the prognosis is usually poor. By analyzing the pathogenesis, diagnosis, and treatment process of a CRAO case after peribulbar injection of triamcinolone acetonide in thyroid-associated ophthalmopathy (TAO), this study aims to investigate the association of CRAO with hemodynamics and orbital pressure, thereby providing references in safety improvement of diagnosis and treatment on TAO.

Thrombolytic Therapy for Central Retinal Artery Occlusion in an Academic Multi-Site Stroke Centre.

Central retinal artery occlusion (CRAO) is a subtype of acute ischaemic stroke leading to severe visual loss. A recent American Heart Association scientific statement proposed time-windows for thrombolysis in CRAO similar to acute ischaemic cerebral strokes. We aimed to review our academic multi-site stroke centre experience with intravenous (IVT) and intra-arterial thrombolysis (IAT) in CRAO between 1997 and 2022. Demographic, clinical characteristics, thrombolysis timeline, concurrent therapies, complications, and 3-month follow-up visual acuity (VA) were collected. The thrombolysed cohort f…

Insight Into Systemic Lupus Erythematosus: Unveiling Central Retinal Artery Occlusion as an Initial Indicator.

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a chronic autoimmune disorder with diverse clinical manifestations. Among these, ocular complications are notably prevalent, affecting up to one-third of patients. One rare but serious ocular complication of SLE is central retinal artery occlusion (CRAO), which can result in significant vision loss. We report a case of a young woman with sudden, painless vision loss in her right eye over two days. Fundoscopy confirmed CRAO, with no light perception in the affected eye and normal vision in the left eye. Physical examination revealed symptoms suggestive of a…
