Trans-ulnar fracture dislocations of the elbow: a systematic review and clarification of classification systems.

BACKGROUND: Complex elbow dislocations in which the dorsal cortex of the ulna is fractured can be difficult to classify and therefore treat. These have variably been described as either Monteggia variant injuries or trans-olecranon fracture dislocations. Additionally, O'Driscoll et al classified coronoid fractures that exit the dorsal cortex of the ulna as "basal coronoid, subtype 2" fractures. The Mayo classification of trans-ulnar fracture dislocations categorizes these injuries in 3 types according to what the coronoid remains attached to: trans-olecranon fracture dislocations, Monteggia va

Imaging techniques of the shoulder: present perspectives.

Through its ability to evaluate the individual components of the rotator cuff, the labral-capsular complex, the subacromial and subdeltoid spaces, and the glenoid, humerus, clavicle, and acromion, MRI provides a means of comprehensively evaluating the shoulder. Further advances in the use of intra-articular MRI contrast agents will undoubtedly enhance the role of MRI in the evaluation of subtle labralcapsular pathology. Although they are experimental, kinematic studies of the shoulder may provide valuable insight into the pathogenesis of disorders such as impingement syndrome. The ability of M

Asymmetrical Fracture Dislocation of Shoulder - A Case Report and Review of Literature.

INTRODUCTION: A bilateral shoulder dislocation is an extremely rare injury with only a few reported cases in English literature, and most of these cases have occurred following a seizure episode or an electric shock. We present the first ever reported case of simultaneous bilateral anterior and posterior fracture dislocation of shoulders and its unique mechanism of injury in a 48 year old diabetic male. CASE REPORT: A 48 year old male presented to our emergency department with pain and restriction of movements involving both shoulders following a fall. The patient was standing by the side of

Relationship between head-to-body delivery interval in shoulder dystocia and neonatal depression.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the relationship between the head-to-body delivery interval in shoulder dystocia, persistent brachial plexus injury, and neonatal depression. METHODS: We compared the head-to-body delivery intervals in 127 cases of uncomplicated shoulder dystocia-identified using medical record coding and verified by chart review in a university--affiliated community hospital--with a series of 55 medical-legal cases of shoulder dystocia with persistent brachial plexus injury, 14 of which included neonatal depression. Neonatal depression was defined as the presence of any of the followin

[THE TREATMENT OF TRAUMATIC SHOULDER INSTABILITY - THE OPEN APPROACH VS. ARTHROSCOPIC APPROACH].

Shoulder dislocation occurs when the head of the humerus disengages from the glenoid bone. About 95% of shoulder dislocations are traumatic, while the other 5% are not trauma-related in a patient with predisposing factors such as generalized ligamentous laxity. Ninety percent of shoulders dislocate anteriorly from direct force on the arm in the "ABER" position (Abduction- External Rotation). Usually, dislocations are accompanied by injuries to the shoulder that may lead to recurrent anterior shoulder instability and in the long-run, osteoarthritis of the shoulder joint. In the case of traumati

Fracture of the humeral surgical neck and shoulder dislocation following an epileptic seizure: Case report.

Epilepsy is a pathological condition characterized by seizures of muscle tension and convulsions in which the patient is unable to control himself, resulting in various complications and injuries. In this paper we talk about a rare case that combines a shoulder dislocation with a fracture of the surgical neck of the humerus after an epileptic seizure. The patient came to the hospital with clinical symptoms directed at dislocating the shoulder after an epileptic seizure, but careful examination and radiography revealed the presence of a fracture of the surgical neck of the humerus, so the manag

Shoulder pain in hemiplegia.

Development of a painful shoulder in the hemiplegic patient is a significant and serious problem, because it can limit the patient's ability to reach his or her maximum functional potential. Several etiologies of shoulder pain have been identified, such as immobilization of the upper extremity, trauma to the joint structures, including brachial plexus injuries, and subluxation of the gleno-humeral joint. A review of the literature explains the basic anatomy and kinesiology of the shoulder complex, the various etiologies of hemiplegic shoulder pain, and the pros and cons of specific treatment t
