OBJECTIVE: This article comprehensively examines the relationship between interpersonal discrimination (IPD) and health-related behavior (HB), expanding upon Pascoe and Richman's (2009) meta-analysis and research synthesis.
METHOD: One hundred and twenty one articles providing zero-order correlations (or information allowing their calculation) between perceptions of IPD and a variety of HB outcomes were coded and analyzed using a random-effects meta-analysis model. One hundred and fifty six articles examining this relationship using multivariate models were also coded and summarized within a

Assisting substance users to recover from the behaviour of drug addiction and maintain long-term rehabilitation is a long and complicated process, in which the motivation to undergo drug rehabilitation plays a decisive role. So far, the cultural connotation of family and its mechanism of promoting behavioural change of substance users have not been fully explored. Through in-depth interviews with 15 drug rehabilitants, among which there were 7 women and 8 men, it is found that the motivation for drug rehabilitation is stimulated under the guidance and restriction of family ethics based on obli

Decision-making deficits are thought to play an important role in the development and persistence of substance use disorders. Individual differences in decision-making abilities and their underlying neurocircuitry may, therefore, constitute an important predictor for the course of substance use and the development of substance use disorders. Here, we investigate the predictive value of decision making and neural mechanisms underlying decision making for future cannabis use and problem severity in a sample of heavy cannabis users. Brain activity during a monetary decision-making task (Iowa gamb

Alexithymia, characterized by impairments in emotional awareness, is common among individuals with substance use disorders. Research on alexithymia suggests that it is a trait that may contribute to substance dependence. This paper will review alexithymia as it relates to substance use and substance use disorders, considering its potential role in the maintenance and treatment of these disorders. We will then describe how neural correlates associated with alexithymia may shed light on how alexithymia relates to addiction. Finally, we present preliminary fMRI data that examines how alexithymia

BACKGROUND: Co-occurring severe mental and substance use disorders are associated with physical, psychological and social complications such as homelessness and unemployment. People with severe mental and substance use disorders are difficult to engage with care. The lack of treatment worsens their health and social conditions and increases treatment costs, as emergency department visits arise. Case management has proved to be effective in promoting engagement with care of people with severe mental and substance use disorders. However, this impact seemed mainly related to the case management m

BACKGROUND: Few systematic studies have examined the reasons why patients with bipolar disorder and substance use disorders misuse alcohol and drugs of abuse. Such reasons may depend heavily on context so qualitative research methods that made no prior theoretical assumptions were employed. We explored the reasons patients give for misusing drugs and alcohol and how these relate to their illness course.
METHOD: Qualitative semi-structured interviews and thematic analysis with a purposive sample of 15 patients with bipolar disorder and a current or past history of drug or alcohol use disorders

ISSUES: Drug consumption rooms (DCR) are implemented in part to reduce the impacts of active drug markets in their immediate vicinity. This scoping review sought to document the concepts and indicators used to describe the impact of DCRs on the nearby neighbourhood.
APPROACH: We conducted a scoping review of peer-reviewed and grey literature, focusing on evaluations of DCRs and related neighbourhood impacts. Articles were included if they contained research looking at operational DCRs and their impact on the surrounding neighbourhood, available in full text and in English. Four databases (Med

Kratom and synthetic cannabinoids (SCs), often known as K2, are psychoactive substances gaining popularity, aided by a lack of regulation, despite serious health risks. Kratom is a plant-based substance containing mitragynine and 7-hydroxymitragynine, which cause opioid and stimulant effects. Users are at risk of opioid toxicity and withdrawal, as well as consequences of product contamination. SCs are cannabinoid receptor agonists despite a lack of structural similarity to cannabis. Adverse effects include increased rates of psychosis as well as seizures, stroke, and myocardial infarction, as

Substance use information in clinical narratives is clinically important but is typically documented in unstructured and informal text, making automatic extraction challenging, particularly in low-resource and non-English settings. The BioCreative IX ToxHabits shared task addresses this problem in Spanish clinical text by identifying substance use triggers and their arguments. In this paper, we introduce I-NOWJ, which addresses these challenges through two complementary strategies: a low-resource strategy based on domain knowledge expansion, controlled data augmentation with quality-aware self

Pregnant and birthing people with untreated substance use disorders (SUDs) face multiple risks of mortality and morbidity. Acute care settings (i.e., hospital inpatient, labor/delivery and emergency departments) are one opportunity to provide substance use services, but have had limited implementation. This scoping review synthesized studies that used an implementation science or quality improvement (QI) strategy to implement substance use services into acute care settings for pregnant or birthing people. Our aim was to 1) characterize the implemented strategies; 2) assess the inclusion of rac

Benzodiazepines (BZDs) are globally prevalent psychotropic substances valued for their anxiolytic, hypnotic, anticonvulsant, and myorelaxant properties. Pharmacologically, they act as positive allosteric modulators of the ionotropic GABAA receptor, enhancing inhibitory synaptic transmission. However, prolonged use poses a significant public health concern, risking adverse effects such as cognitive impairment, motor incoordination, tolerance, and physical dependence. The development of tolerance is mediated by complex neurobiological changes, notably the downregulation of GABAA receptor subunit

Substance use disorders (SUDs) are a major public health problem in the United States and cause substantial morbidity and mortality. There are meaningful gaps in the available SUD treatment options, and the development of new therapies is urgently needed. While medications with U.S. Food and Drug Administration approval are available for alcohol, nicotine, and opioid use disorders, there are no approved pharmacotherapies for cannabis, cocaine, or methamphetamine use disorders. Behavioral treatments for SUDs have significant limitations in effectiveness and accessibility, and there is a need fo

Interoception is the perception of internal stimuli and is tightly coupled to the development of aberrant motivation to consume pharmacological reinforcers characteristic of addiction. We review the current theoretical basis of the role of interoception in addiction, candidate neurobiological mechanisms underlying interoception of drugs, and the place of interoception in the broader theoretical understanding of addiction. Broadly, interoceptive drug stimuli acquire control over appetitive behaviour by functioning as conditioned stimuli, discriminative stimuli, and occasion setters and these pr

BACKGROUND: Recent technological advances have led to increased experimentation in non-invasively modulating the brain to reduce craving and drug use in substance use disorder (SUD). However, many forms of neuromodulation remain costly and require administration in a medical setting, limiting scalability. Vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) circumvents these limitations. A substantial body of neurobiological and clinical evidence suggests that VNS may be well-suited to target core mechanisms underlying substance use, including craving, mood, and stress dysregulation.

Background: Substance use often takes place in social settings. Virtual reality (VR) can simulate social settings such as being offered substances and being around others who use substances at a party. Objectives: This study reviews the emerging literature on using VR to examine substance use in social contexts and explore intervention strategies to reduce such behavior. Results: The findings indicate that most research focuses on alcohol consumption and cigarette/e-cigarette use in venues like bars, home parties, and restaurants. Evidence suggests that VR effectively simulates complex social

Interneurons (INs) play a crucial role in the regulation of neural activity within the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC), a brain region critically involved in executive functions and behavioral control. In recent preclinical studies, dysregulation of INs in the mPFC has been implicated in the pathophysiology of substance use disorder, characterized by vulnerability to chronic drug use. Here, we explore the diversity of mPFC INs and their connectivity and roles in vulnerability to addiction. We also discuss how these INs change over time with drug exposure. Finally, we focus on noninvasive brain

Alternative to discipline programs, defined as programs for nurses 'impaired' by issues such as alcohol and/or drug use, provide treatment and support to return to the profession. This paper aims to explore alternative to discipline programs for nurses to determine whether these programs are relevant to other geographical contexts. A scoping review was conducted in accordance with the JBI methodology. The PRIMSA-ScR checklist was used in this scoping review. The databases searched included MEDLINE (PubMed), Embase (Elsevier), Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (EBSCOhost)

Substance use disorders (SUD) are chronic, relapsing conditions marked by high variability in treatment response and frequent relapse. This variability arises from complex interactions among behavioral, environmental, and biological factors unique to each individual. Precision medicine, which tailors treatment to patient-specific characteristics, offers a promising avenue to address these challenges. This review explores key factors influencing SUD, including severity, comorbidities, drug use motives, polysubstance use, cognitive impairments, and biological and environmental influences. Advanc
