In an endoscopic screening study of rectosigmoidal polyps in a defined normal population aged 50-59 years, polyps 5 mm or larger in diameter were removed by diathermic snare resection for histological examination. Histological examination was possible in 50 of 55 polyps removed during colonoscopy from 27 men and 17 women. A consecutive series of 19 patients with acute perforation of the sigmoid colon, were subjected to Hartmann's procedure. The rationale for primary resection of the diseased segment of the bowel is to remove the source of sepsis. The operation took approximately 2 1/4 hours, the temperature was normalized within 2 days and the hospital stay was 22 days. The perforations were caused by cancer in 4 patients. Giant sigmoid diverticula ("giant gas cysts," "giant sigmoid cysts") are an unusual complication of diverticulitis. We have recently seen two patients with such lesions, bringing the total number of reported cases to 48. Most patients are elderly and complain of abdominal pain or the presence of an abdominal mass. Air trapping by a ball-valve mechanism may be responsible for formation of the fibrous cysts. The gas-filled structures can usually be differentiated from other conditions by contrast studies. Results of TAPP inguinal hernia repair in 234 patients are presented. Apart from the most frequently described complications of TAPP one case of sigmoid-cutaneous fistula caused by a rolled-up mesh and sigmoid colon perforation 5 years after TAPP was observed. This patients was cured by partial sigmoid resection and remowal of the displaced mesh.

In a flux chamber study of ion transport in human colon, we compared baseline rates with those measured during electrical stimulation of intrinsic nerves. BACKGROUND: Primary fallopian tube carcinoma (PFTC) is a rare gynecologic malignancy, and isolated colon metastasis as the initial manifestation of PFTC is exceedingly rare. Colorectal perforation following an upper gastrointestinal series is rare. The majority of patients are women. Only 4 cases of perforation have been reported in men with the English literature. Here, we report two more cases of sigmoid colon perforation after an upper gastrointestinal series in men.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Large bowel obstruction (LBO) is most commonly caused by neoplasms, but rare etiologies like endometriosis should be considered, as bowel involvement can mimic other gastrointestinal disorders and lead to obstruction. Sigmoid endometriosis is a rare but important cause of LBO, which can lead to symptoms ranging from subtle gastrointestinal complaints to overt obstruction. BACKGROUND: Complications occur in approximately 12% of cases of diverticulitis, with perforation occurring in up to 10% of complications. Typically, patient with perforated diverticulitis present intraperitoneally with abdominal pain and peritoneal signs.
