Development of a New Negative Obstacle Sensor for Augmented Electric Wheelchair.

Due to pathologies or age-related problems, in some disabled people, motor impairment is associated with cognitive and/or visual impairments. This combination of limitations unfortunately leads to an inability to move around independently. Indeed, their situation does not allow them to use a conventional electric wheelchair, for safety reasons, and for the moment there is no other technological solution providing safe movement capacity. This lack of access to an autonomous travel solution has the consequence of weakening the intellectual, personal, social, cultural and moral development, as we

Comparison of a single-use, digital flexible ureteroscope with a reusable, fiberoptic ureteroscope for management of patients with urolithiasis.

OBJECTIVES: Ureteroscopy is one of the commonest procedures performed to manage urolithiasis. Flexible ureteroscopy has been traditionally based on reusable, fiber-optic ureteroscopes. Technology advancements permitted the development of single-use scopes with digital image. The aim of this study is to compare efficacy and safety between a reusable, fiberoptic ureteroscope with a single-use, digital scope. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We collected data based on chart review from a prospectively collected database on a tertiary, high-volume hospital in Greece. Baseline, perioperative and postoperativ

Mechanical Blood-Immersed Bearings in Continuous-Flow Rotary Blood Pumps.

Mechanical blood-immersed bearings have been used in many continuous-flow rotary blood pumps to reduce friction between relatively moving parts, but their use has been associated with a significant incidence of pump thrombosis. As newer cardiac assist devices with more advanced bearings become available, the rate of pump thrombosis will likely decrease. Nevertheless, it is important to understand the design limitations of mechanical bearings as pumps utilizing them are still in use as chronic support devices and especially in the acute setting for temporary support devices. A properly designed

Bevel angle study of flexible hollow needle insertion into biological mimetic soft-gel: Simulation and experimental validation.

BACKGROUND: A thorough understanding of cutting-edge geometry and cutting forces of hollow biopsy needles are required to optimise needle tip design to improve fine needle aspiration procedures. OBJECTIVES: To incorporate the dynamics of needle motion in a model for flexible hollow bevel tipped needle insertion into a biological mimetic soft-gel using parameters obtained from experimental work. Additionally, the models will be verified against corresponding needle insertion experiments. METHODS: To verify simulation results, needle deflection and insertion forces were compared with correspon

Microfluidic flow-cell with passive flow control for microscopy applications.

We present a fast, inexpensive and robust technique for constructing thin, optically transparent flow-cells with pump-free flow control. Using layers of glass, patterned adhesive tape and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) connections, we demonstrate the fabrication of planar devices with chamber height as low as 25 μm and with millimetre-scale (x,y) dimensions for wide-field microscope observation. The method relies on simple benchtop equipment and does not require microfabrication facilities, glass drilling or other workshop infrastructure. We also describe a gravity perfusion system that exploits

Soft Humanoid Hands with Large Grasping Force Enabled by Flexible Hybrid Pneumatic Actuators.

Soft grippers and actuators have attracted increasing attention due to safer and more adaptable human-machine and environment-machine interactions than their rigid counterparts. In this study we present a novel soft humanoid hand that is capable of robustly grasping a variety of objects with different weights, sizes, shapes, textures, and stiffnesses. The soft hand fingers are made of flexible hybrid pneumatic actuators (FHPAs) designed based on a modular approach. A theoretical model is proposed to evaluate the bending deformation, grasping force, and loading capacity of the FHPAs, and the ef

Laparoscopic Insertion of Various Shaped Trocars in a Porcine Model.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: The number of laparoscopic procedures increases annually with an estimated 3% of complications, one third of them linked to Verres' needle or trocar insertion. The safety and efficacy of ports insertion during laparoscopic surgery may be related the technique but also to trocar design. This study aims to compare physical parameters of abdominal wall penetration for 5 different trocars. METHODS: Eleven pigs were studied. Five different commercially available trocars were randomically inserted at the midline. Real-time video recording of the insertions was achieved to

[Recognition and classification of posture and gait patterns of rollator users by distance measurements-a comparison between clinical assessment and automatic classification].

BACKGROUND: This article describes the development of an add-on module for wheeled walkers dedicated to sensor-based posture and gait pattern recognition with the goal to develop an everyday aid for fall prevention. The core contribution is a clinical study that compared single gait parameter assessments coming from medical staff to those obtained from an automatic classification algorithm, i. e. the Mahalanobis distance over time series of sensor measurements. METHODS: The walker-module described here extends an off-the-shelf wheeled walker by two depth cameras that observe the torso, pelvic

An investigation into the design of a device to treat haemorrhagic stroke.

In this study, we present the design considerations of a device to assist in the potential treatment of hemorrhagic stroke with the aim of stopping blood from flowing out into brain tissue. We present and model three designs for the clinical scenarios when saccular aneurysms rupture in the middle cerebral artery in the brain. We evaluate and model these three designs using computer aided design software, SolidWorks, which allows the devices to be tested using finite element analysis and also enables us to justify that the materials chosen were suitable for potential use. Computational fluid dy

Design and evaluation of the Micra Transcatheter Pacing System for bradyarrhythmia management.

Permanent cardiac pacemakers have traditionally comprised a surgically implanted subcutaneous pulse generator affixed to at least one transvenous pacing lead. Despite technological advances, implant-related complications and transvenous-lead failure rates have remained high. The Micra Transcatheter Pacing System is a miniaturized single chamber pacemaker that is implanted directly into the right ventricle, eliminating the subcutaneous pocket and creating a leadless pacemaker system. Registry data show an extremely high implant success rate, significantly lower major complication rates than tra

Injection system for fast capillary electrophoresis based on pressure regulation with flow restrictors.

A fast automated system for rapid electrophoretic separations in short conventional capillaries employing contactless conductivity detection is presented. The instrument is based on pneumatic pressurization and does not require a conventional pump. The required pressures and flow rates for the different steps of the injection and flushing processes are produced with the help of two flow restrictors. The device is implemented on a microfluidic breadboard with dimensions of ca. 13 × 20 cm and employs miniature valves. Nine inorganic cations, namely NH4+, K+ , Na+ , Ca2+ , Mg2+ , Mn2+ , Sr2+ , Li

Artificial blood feeders for mosquito and ticks-Where from, where to?

Mosquito and tick feeding activity represent a key threat for humans, livestock, pets and wildlife worldwide. Rearing these vectors in laboratory conditions is extremely important to investigate basic facets of their biology, vector competence, new control strategies, as well as mechanisms of pesticide resistance. However, the use of animals or humans to provide blood for hematophagous arthropod feeding poses a strict limit to these researches, due to the accidental transmission of diseases, ethical problems concerning animal welfare, as well as expensive and time-consuming animal rearing proc

Optimal coordinated voltage control in active distribution networks using backtracking search algorithm.

The growing interest in distributed generation (DG) in recent years has led to a number of generators connected to a distribution system. The integration of DGs in a distribution system has resulted in a network known as active distribution network due to the existence of bidirectional power flow in the system. Voltage rise issue is one of the predominantly important technical issues to be addressed when DGs exist in an active distribution network. This paper presents the application of the backtracking search algorithm (BSA), which is relatively new optimisation technique to determine the opt

Electromagnetic disturbances rejection with single skin contact in the context of ECG measurements with cooperative sensors.

Classical approaches to make high-quality measurements of biopotential signals require the use of shielded or multi-wire cables connecting the electrodes to a central unit in a star arrangement. Consequently, increasing the number of leads increases cabling and connector complexity which is not only limiting patient comfort but also anticipated as the main limiting factor for future miniaturization and cost reduction of tomorrow's wearables. We have recently introduced a novel sensing architecture that significantly reduces cabling complexity by eliminating shielded or multi-wire cables as wel
