"Why should I pay for this vaccine?" - Norwegian adolescents views on meningococcal vaccination.

BACKGROUND: As one of few countries in Europe, Norway does not offer vaccination against invasive meningococcal disease (IMD) as part of the National Immunization Program for Children (NIP). Instead, adolescents aged 16-19 are recommended to consider having the meningococcal ACWY conjugate vaccine (MCV4) if they participate in activities that increase the risk of IMD. Meningococcal vaccination rates in Norway are low compared to vaccines offered through the NIP. Whereas all vaccinations in the NIP are free and organized through schools or municipal health clinics, there is no uniform system in

Perceptions of a Culturally Tailored Narrative Video for Skin Cancer Prevention Among Spanish-Speaking Hispanic Outdoor Workers: Exploratory Study.

BACKGROUND: Outdoor workers receive significantly more UV radiation exposure than indoor workers, increasing their skin cancer risk. Hispanic individuals comprise a large proportion of the outdoor workforce in the United States, but have limited access to culturally tailored prevention resources. OBJECTIVE: This exploratory study assessed the perceptions of a culturally tailored narrative video to promote skin cancer prevention among Spanish-speaking Hispanic outdoor workers. METHODS: A qualitative study was conducted using two focus groups with Hispanic outdoor workers. Prior to viewing the

Healthcare-seeking behaviour of fever cases in Magude district, southern Mozambique: A qualitative study.

Fever is the main manifestation of malaria, which is a major public health concern in Mozambique. Achieving prompt diagnosis and appropriate management of all malaria cases is key to avoiding severe malaria and death, thus communities need to detect all fevers and seek care promptly. Studies in Magude district have shown that the local population is aware of malaria, including fever as one of the disease symptoms, however, a significant proportion do not seek formal care for fever. This study sought to analyse healthcare-seeking behaviour for fever episodes in Magude and understand its facilit

Understanding caregivers' and community influencers' perspectives on the barriers to childhood immunisation in Northern Nigerian States with public-private partnerships in routine immunisation programme.

BACKGROUND: Despite investments by the Nigerian government and international organisations in childhood immunisation to combat child mortality, coverage in many northern states remains below the national average, thereby increasing the risk of vaccine-preventable diseases. This paper examines the barriers to immunisation in six states in northeast and northwest Nigeria, which have the lowest vaccination coverage rates in the country. METHOD: We conducted 24 focus group discussions (FGDs) with mothers/caregivers and community influencers who collaborate with health workers to provide routine i

Development of a scale for defensive medicine practices in primary care.

BACKGROUND: Defensive medicine, characterized by the avoidance of high-risk patients or the overuse of diagnostic and therapeutic interventions due to fear of litigation or complaints, poses significant challenges in primary care. Existing scales primarily focus on hospital settings, limiting their applicability to family physicians. This study aimed to develop and validate a scale tailored to measure defensive medicine behaviors in primary care contexts. METHODS: Scale development involved reviewing the literature, conducting focus group discussions with family physicians, and consulting wit

Physiotherapists' perceptions on the management of musculoskeletal conditions in women of perimenopausal and menopausal age: a qualitative focus group study.

BACKGROUND: The perimenopause and menopause are characterised by a reduction in estrogen that can affect tendons, fascia, cartilage, pain perception, and inflammatory processes, which may contribute to musculoskeletal pain. It is largely unknown if this is considered by physiotherapists when managing patients with musculoskeletal conditions. OBJECTIVE: To explore UK physiotherapists' perceptions of managing women of perimenopausal and menopausal age presenting with musculoskeletal conditions. METHODS: Using an interpretative qualitative phenomenological approach, eleven physiotherapists part

PrEP knowledge and perceptions among women living in North Carolina public housing communities.

Women in low-income communities are disproportionately affected by HIV yet have been largely left out of efforts to raise awareness about pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP). To inform future awareness campaigns, we assessed women's current knowledge of and attitudes toward PrEP. We surveyed 184 women living in public housing communities in North Carolina regarding PrEP knowledge, attitudes, and perceived norms, as well as reported HIV-associated factors and perceived HIV acquisition chances. 38 women participated in eight focus group discussions (FGDs) addressing personal and community PrEP perce

'You adapt, and you try not to resent it': a qualitative study exploring impacts of living with ticks and barriers to adopting preventive measures in Canada.

BACKGROUND: Lyme disease (LD) is Canada's most common tick-borne disease (TBD), with other tick-borne pathogens being detected with increasing frequency. Tick bite prevention remains the most effective preventive measure against TBDs, yet individual preventive behaviours are not always adopted by at-risk individuals. This is concerning, given that the incidence of TBDs is predicted to increase with climate change. The objectives were: (1) to understand the facilitators and barriers to adopting tick bite preventive behaviours for at-risk individuals, and (2) to explore whether adverse behaviour

A knowledge, attitude and practices assessment of control measures for bovine tuberculosis and brucellosis towards a more effective approach to national control programs in South Africa.

Bovine brucellosis and bovine tuberculosis are zoonotic diseases with economic and public health importance across the world, especially in developing countries where the diseases are endemic. The diseases are classified as neglected diseases in developing nations with poor resources despite good control measures in some developed countries. The purpose of this study is to assess the knowledge, attitudes and perceptions (KAP) of stakeholders towards control measures for bovine brucellosis (BR) and bovine tuberculosis (bTB) at a livestock-wildlife interface. Stakeholders selected were small-sca

Missed Opportunities for Intervening Early in Preschoolers with Developmental Concern: Perspectives From Head Start Parents, Teachers, and Healthcare Providers.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to discover the care meanings of facilitators and barriers to detection and intervention for developmental delay among Head Start preschool-aged children, as viewed by parents, teachers, and primary care providers. METHODS: We used a qualitative focus group design and broad cultural lens to understand similarities and differences in family and professional care, as Head Start programs educate preschoolers living in poverty who are disproportionately from ethno-racial minoritized groups. We sought the perspectives of 15 Head Start parents equally repres

Exploring factors affecting adherence to multiple micronutrient supplementation during pregnancy in Cambodia: A qualitative analysis.

For decades, iron-folic acid (IFA) supplements have been provided to pregnant women in Cambodia through antenatal care (ANC) services. However, mounting evidence suggests that multiple micronutrient supplements (MMS) are superior to IFA supplements in achieving positive pregnancy outcomes. The possibility of transitioning from IFA supplements to MMS in government-run health centres is currently being assessed in Cambodia. A crucial component of this assessment involves identifying factors that can influence adherence to MMS, as low adherence can reduce supplement effectiveness. Consequently, t

"I'll take them another day": A qualitative study exploring the socio-behavioral complexities of childhood vaccination in urban poor settlements.

Despite improvement over recent decades, childhood vaccination uptake remains a concern across countries. The World Health Organization observed that over 25 million children missed out on one or more vaccines in 2021, with urban poor and other marginalized groups being the most affected. Given the higher risk of disease transmission and vaccine-preventable diseases (VPD) outbreaks across densely populated urban slums, identifying effective interventions to improve childhood vaccination in this vulnerable population is crucial. This study explored the behavioral and social factors influencing
