Histological and confocal changes in rabbit cornea produced by an intrastromal inlay made of hexafocon A.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to evaluate biocompatibility of a newly proposed intrastromal inlay in rabbit corneas. METHODS: Eighteen eyes of 9 New Zealand rabbits were included in this prospective study. An intrastromal pocket was created in both eyes using Melles instruments. Annular intracorneal inlays made of hexafocon A were implanted randomly into the stromal pocket of one eye of each rabbit. Confocal microscopy was performed at each visit during 6-month follow-up. After 6 months, the rabbits were killed and corneal tissues of both eyes were sent for light microscopic studies. RE

Long-Term Outcomes of Excimer Laser-Assisted Penetrating Keratoplasty Using a Commercially Available Laser System - A Retrospective Case Series.

BACKGROUND: Favorable functional outcomes have been reported after excimer laser-assisted penetrating keratoplasty (EXL PKP). But this technique has not been widely adopted, and there are reports on EXL PKP from only a very limited number of institutions. Some of these results refer to operations carried out with laser systems that are not commercially available. In this retrospective case series, we report the long-term outcome of EXL PKP using the Schwind Amaris 500E laser system. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This retrospective consecutive case series included 30 eyes of 29 patients who had underg

Association between intraoperative decentration and corneal higher-order aberrations in lenticule extraction surgery.

BACKGROUND: Precise centration during refractive lenticule extraction is critical for optimal visual outcomes. However, intraoperative decentration between the corneal vertex (CV) and the lenticule center (LC) may occur, and its impact on postoperative corneal higher-order aberrations (HOAs) remains incompletely understood. METHODS: This retrospective observational study analyzed surgical videos of 331 SmartSight procedures performed at Cheongju First Eye Clinic, Cheongju, South Korea. Intraoperative decentration was measured as the distance between the preoperative CV (obtained from Scheimpfl

Clinical and tear cytokine profiles after advanced surface ablation refractive surgery: A six-month follow-up.

Neuropathic dry eye is one of the most frequently seen complications after corneal refractive surgery, however, its incidence decreases in a significant manner along the first six months postoperative, reaching between 10 and 45% incidence. However, little is known on the inflammatory status of the ocular surface during this recovery process. We aim to analyze the clinical and tear molecule concentration changes along six months after advanced surface ablation for myopia correction, in a prospective study including 18 eyes of 18 subjects who bilaterally underwent advanced surface ablation corn

Screening Candidates for Refractive Surgery With Corneal Tomographic-Based Deep Learning.

IMPORTANCE: Evaluating corneal morphologic characteristics with corneal tomographic scans before refractive surgery is necessary to exclude patients with at-risk corneas and keratoconus. In previous studies, researchers performed screening with machine learning methods based on specific corneal parameters. To date, a deep learning algorithm has not been used in combination with corneal tomographic scans. OBJECTIVE: To examine the use of a deep learning model in the screening of candidates for refractive surgery. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: A diagnostic, cross-sectional study was condu

Artisan iris-fixated toric phakic and aphakic intraocular lens implantation for the correction of astigmatic refractive error after radial keratotomy.

We report 2 patients who had radial keratotomy (RK) to correct myopia. The first patient developed a postoperative hyperopic shift and cataract. Nine years post RK, she had intracapsular cataract extraction and implantation of an Artisan aphakic intraocular lens (IOL). Twenty years post RK, hyperopia and astigmatism progressed to +7.0 -5.75 x 100 with a best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) of 20/20. Due to contact lens intolerance, the Artisan aphakic IOL was exchanged for an Artisan toric aphakic IOL. Three months later, the BCVA was 20/20 with +1.0 -0.50 x 130. The second patient demonstrated
