Saline-based modified del Nido cardioplegia versus multidose St. Thomas cardioplegia in canine mitral valve repair: A randomized controlled trial.

OBJECTIVE: To compare the utility of a saline-based modified del Nido (mDN) cardioplegia solution with a conventional institutional technique (multidose St. Thomas blood cardioplegia) for mitral valve repair (MVR) in dogs. STUDY DESIGN: Prospective, randomized, open-label trial. ANIMALS: Forty client-owned dogs with myxomatous mitral valve disease (stage B2 and C) eligible for MVR were divided into control and modified mDN groups. METHODS: Cardioplegia was induced in the control group using 50% blood containing St. Thomas solution every 10 min. In the mDN group, a cardioplegia solution cont

Increased radiographic stifle soft tissue opacity in dogs with patella luxation.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the prevalence of increased radiographic soft tissue opacity in canine stifles with patella luxation in the absence of overt cranial cruciate ligament (CCL) pathology. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective case series. ANIMAL POPULATION: A total of 49 client-owned dogs (57 limbs). METHODS: Dogs with patella luxation that underwent arthrotomy with CCL evaluation were included. Dogs were excluded if overt pathology of the CCL was noted during orthopedic examination and/or surgical evaluation. Correlation of increased radiographic soft tissue opacity with age, breed, weight, dura

Successful venotomy for portal tumor thrombus removal due to pancreatic carcinoma in a dog.

OBJECTIVE: To describe a portal venotomy technique and outcome for tumoral thrombus removal in a dog with insulinoma invading the portal vein. STUDY DESIGN: Case report. ANIMALS: A 9-year-old entire male West Highland White Terrier. METHODS: The dog was referred for further investigation of recurrent collapsing episodes and weakness. An abdominal ultrasound revealed a pancreatic mass. Biochemical tests were consistent with insulinoma. A dynamic (4D) contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CT) perfusion study showed a large pancreatic mass originating from the left lobe of the pancreas invadi

Evaluation of the rate of residual polystomatic sublingual acinar tissue without tunneling dorsal to the digastricus using a ventral or ventrolateral approach in cats.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the rate of residual polystomatic sublingual acinar tissue if tunneling dorsal to the digastricus muscle and dissection to the sublingual caruncle is not performed during mandibular-sublingual sialadenectomy in cats. STUDY DESIGN: Cadaveric study. SAMPLE POPULATION: A total of 10 feline cadavers. METHODS: Mandibular-sublingual sialadenectomy was performed bilaterally in 10 feline cadavers using a ventral or ventrolateral approach in a randomized fashion. Accuracy of computer-assisted drilling of equine cervical vertebral bodies using a purpose-built cervical frame-An experimental cadaveric study.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the accuracy of computer-assisted surgery (CAS) of equine cervical vertebrae using a purpose-built cervical frame (CF) for neck stabilization. STUDY DESIGN: Experimental cadaveric study. SAMPLE POPULATION: Six whole fresh equine cadavers. METHODS: Cadavers were positioned in dorsal recumbency with the neck extended within the CF. A cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT)-based surgical navigation system with optical tracking was used. A ventral approach exposed cervical vertebrae C3-C5. In each cadaver, 12 drill corridors were prepared with the patient tracker on the CF (p

Clinical findings and outcomes of eight dogs with surgically treated frontal sinus mucoceles.

OBJECTIVE: To report clinical findings and outcomes of dogs surgically treated for frontal sinus mucocele. STUDY DESIGN: Short case series. ANIMALS: Eight dogs. METHODS: Seven of eight dogs had evidence of previous skull trauma and developed clinical signs by 10 months of age. On computed tomography, all dogs had a fluid-attenuating, expansile lesion within the frontal sinus and multicentric bone erosion. Surgical treatments comprised frontal sinusotomy and debridement, with either stenting of nasofrontal openings or removal of all sinus lining, with or without fat graft ablation. RESULTS:

Cooled feline intestine and fresh intestine did not differ in enterotomy leak pressure testing or in gross wall thickness measurement.

OBJECTIVE: To report gross anatomical gastrointestinal measurements and compare enterotomy leak pressures between fresh and cooled feline cadavers. STUDY DESIGN: Ex vivo, randomized study. ANIMALS: Fresh feline cadavers (n = 20). METHODS: Jejunal segments (8 cm) were harvested on the same day as euthanasia. From each cadaver, one segment was randomly assigned to control (C), fresh enterotomy (FE), and cooled enterotomy (CE) groups. Enterotomy construction and leak testing were performed within 12 h of euthanasia for the C and FE groups and after 17-29 h of cooling for the CE group. Initial
