Bio-based host-guest complex enabling MXene towards multifunctional fire-safe epoxy via confined catalysis.

A fire-safe and mechanically robust epoxy with multi-functionality is in great demand in various fields such as aviation and functional coatings. To attain this goal, a bio-based host-guest ferrocene chemistry coupled with complexation reaction drove a confined intercalation and surface assembly of MXene synchronously. Without conventional fire-retardant elements, a ultralow loading of 2 wt% as-synthesized hybrid MXene@CD@Ferr-Fe endowed epoxy with UL-94 V-0 rating, limiting oxygen index of 29.5 %, a reduced peak heat release rate and smoke production rate by 40.3 % and 42.0 %, respectively. M…

Simultaneous fMRI and tDCS for Enhancing Training of Flight Tasks.

There is a gap in our understanding of how best to apply transcranial direct-current stimulation (tDCS) to enhance learning in complex, realistic, and multifocus tasks such as aviation. Our goal is to assess the effects of tDCS and feedback training on task performance, brain activity, and connectivity using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). Experienced glider pilots were recruited to perform a one-day, three-run flight-simulator task involving varying difficulty conditions and a secondary auditory task, mimicking real flight requirements. The stimulation group (versus sham) receiv…

Examining the nature of fear of flying.

BACKGROUND: The nature of fear of flying (FOF) is not well understood. It is commonly assumed to be a fear learned from flight-specific experiences. However, existing literature suggests that FOF is a manifestation of fears of other stimuli (e.g., heights) embedded in the flying situation, but not specific to it. This study compared the level of prediction of FOF attained from flight-specific conditioning experiences (specifically, classical conditioning experiences in direct, observational, and verbal modes) with the level of prediction attained from flight-embedded fears. METHODS: There wer
