Congenital infiltrating lipomatosis of the face (CILF) is a rare disorder, causing unilateral facial asymmetry characterized by enlargement of the cheek or chin. Hemimegalencephaly is a unique malformation characterized by enlargement of a cerebral hemisphere. The association of CILF and hemimegalencephaly has rarely been reported. We present a case of unilateral facial swelling in a 1.5-year-old boy in whom magnetic resonance imaging and computed tomography revealed CILF associated with unilateral megalencephaly.

Middle ear adenoma is a rare disease derived from the middle ear mucosa. It is usually lack specific findings and easily mistaken for other conditions, delaying a correct diagnosis. In particular, few cases with facial nerve paralysis have been reported. We describe a case of middle ear adenoma that caused hearing loss and recurrent facial paralysis in a 29-year-old woman. In an attempt to treat the facial nerve paralysis, we performed tympanomastoidectomy and facial nerve decompression. By pathological examination, we finally diagnosed it middle ear adenoma with neuroendocrine differentiation

We report the unusual case of a baby with a paramedian cleft of the lower lip. In 1976, Tessier described a classification of craniofacial clefts based on personal observations, and he predicted the possibility of further clefts being discovered by labeling midline mandibular clefts "30." This case of a paramedian cleft of the lower lip would fit into what could be a new Tessier 28/29 cleft. In the future, clefts in new locations around the mouth may be seen, thus filling the gaps in Tessier's classification.

OBJECT: A comparison of two electrophysiological methods used to assess facial nerve function intraoperatively was conducted in 33 patients with tumors of the cerebellopontine angle.
METHODS: All 33 patients had presented with normal facial nerve function preoperatively. After general anesthesia had been induced by a mixture of midazolam and fentanyl, continual online EMG recordings from the orbicularis oculi and oris muscles were alternated with nasal muscle F-wave recordings. Facial nerve outcomes, assessed using a modified House-Brackmann scale, varied among good (48%), moderate (18%), and

BACKGROUND: To review experience with partial superficial parotidectomy (PSP) and retrograde dissection of the facial nerve as a treatment for benign parotid tumors.
METHODS: Retrospective cohort study of all patients presenting with a suspected benign primary parotid tumor undergoing parotid surgery.
RESULTS: There were 214 cases retrieved. Postoperative facial nerve weakness occurred in 33% of patients; all were temporary. Increased extent of surgical resection (P < .001), deeper tumors (P = .05), and close tumor proximity to the facial nerve (P = .007) significantly correlated with postop

Between 1989 and April 1993 29 grafts from the scapula region have been harvested for reconstruction in the head and neck area. 7 out of 20 osteocutaneous grafts have been used for reconstructions in the maxillary/midface area. In this area, one graft was completely lost due to venous congestion and another loss of the soft tissue component of one graft occurred. The complication rate in the maxilla seems to be higher than in application of the flap for mandibular reconstruction. Reconstruction in the maxillary/midface area most often requires several surgical steps. In special situations, as

Facial nerve palsy due to temporal bone metastasis of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) has rarely been reported. We experienced a rare case of temporal bone metastasis of HCC that initially presented as facial nerve palsy and was diagnosed by surgical biopsy. This patient also discovered for the first time that he had chronic hepatitis B and C infections due to this facial nerve palsy. Radiation therapy greatly relieved the facial pain and facial nerve palsy. This report suggests that hepatologists should consider metastatic HCC as a rare but possible cause of new-onset cranial neuropathy in pat

OBJECTIVES: The management of the facial nerve (FN) is a major issue in parotid cancer, especially when there is no preoperative facial palsy and FN invasion is discovered intraoperatively. The aim of this study was to assess the impact of FN resection in patients with parotid cancer abutting the FN, without pretreatment facial palsy, using a propensity score matching.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Data from all patients treated between 2009 and 2020 for a primary parotid cancer abutting or invading the FN but without pretreatment facial palsy were extracted from the national multicentric REFCOR dat

Treatment of advanced parotid or cutaneous malignancies often requires sacrifice of the facial nerve as well as resection of the parotid gland and surrounding structures. In addition to considerations regarding reinnervation and dynamic reanimation, reconstruction in this setting must take into account unique factors such as soft tissue volume deficits and the high likelihood of adjunctive radiation therapy. Furthermore, considerations of patient comorbidities including advanced age and poor long-term prognosis often influence reconstructive modality. The optimal reconstructive technique would

Two patients with schwannomas that originated from the region of the geniculate ganglion of the facial nerve are reported. They presented with progressive facial nerve paralysis and variable disturbance of hearing. Computed tomograms demonstrated a mass lesion eroding the temporal bone (petrous portion) and extending into the middle fossa. The treatment consisted of complete excision of the tumor, and a hypoglossal-facial nerve anastomosis. Computed tomography should be performed on all patients with facial palsy of a progressive nature. Early diagnosis and surgical treatment of facial schwann

Xeroderma pigmentosum (XP) is a rare autosomal recessive genodermatosis associated with hypersensitivity to ultraviolet radiation (UVR), being due to defects involving the nucleotide excision repair pathway. Patients with XP are prone to develop multiple cutaneous neoplasms including non-melanoma skin cancers and melanoma. Collision tumors in patients with XP have been reported in the literature including the following lesions, actinic keratosis, basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and in situ melanoma. Herein, we present a rare collision tumor composed of melanoma and basosquamous

Successful perioral reconstruction is the result of consideration of both functional and esthetic goals. The lips are complex esthetic units with multiple tissue layers and distinct anatomic landmarks. Reconstruction can be difficult due to variables affecting the defect, such as size, depth, location, and involvement of adjacent subunits. There are many local flaps that can be used to match the complex tissue layers and anatomic landmarks. Use of the same reconstructive principles can be applied to secondary reconstruction to attain a successful outcome. This article focuses on local reconstr

Schwannoma in the head and neck region is very rare. The tumour occurring in the intraparotid facial nerve is even rarer. A patient presenting with a parotid swelling with facial nerve paralysis is not pathognomonic of a facial nerve schwannoma. However it may occur because enlargement of the parotid, by any kind of tumour especially a malignant one can cause facial nerve paralysis. We report a case of an intraparotid facial nerve schwannoma, in a patient who presented with parotid enlargement and facial nerve paralysis.

Human myiasis is a parasitosis found in tropical and underdeveloped countries. It usually affects the elderly, unhealthy and mentally disabled individuals. It is caused by dipterous that lay their eggs in necrotic or infected tissues, although areas of the body that are apparently healthy can also be affected. Frequently the fly deposits several eggs on the peripheral parts of scratches and wounds. The treatment of myiasis involves mechanical removal of the larvae with hemostatic pincers. Larvae rupture must be avoided. Application of topical ether or similar volatile substance is useful. Prev
