Influence of generalized joint hyperlaxity on volar plate configuration and its interaction with the FDP tendon in the proximal interphalangeal joint: an MRI study.

OBJECTIVES: The volar plate (VP) is critical for stabilizing the proximal interphalangeal joint (PIPJ) during flexion. However, its in vivo behaviour in individuals with generalized joint hyperlaxity (GJH) remains unclear. This study aimed to quantitatively assess VP displacement and its spatial relationship with the flexor digitorum profundus (FDP) tendon in individuals with/without GJH during PIPJ flexion and grasping conditions. METHODS: MRI scans of 64 index fingers (32 participants: 16 with GJH, 16 controls) were acquired at 5 PIPJ flexion angles (0°, 30°, 60°, 90°, full fist) under 2 st

Large-scale EEG neural network changes following accelerated high-definition transcranial direct current stimulation in major depressive disorder: A randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: High-density transcranial direct current stimulation (HD-tDCS) shows efficacy in major depressive disorder (MDD), but underlying mechanisms remain unclear. Electroencephalogram (EEG) microstates reflect large-scale network dynamics, and MDD patients exhibit microstate abnormalities. Whether HD-tDCS modulates these states and their clinical relevance is unknown. METHODS: In a randomized controlled trial, 39 MDD patients were assigned to either drug or HD-tDCS groups. The HD-tDCS group received accelerated stimulation over the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, twice daily for 20

Distinct attention network topology and dynamics and their relations with pubertal hormones in preadolescent boys and girls with binge eating.

The increased prevalence of binge eating during puberty is predominantly in girls, coinciding with a surge in pubertal hormones. This suggests that hormone-activated alterations in widespread brain networks, such as attention network, can contribute to the pathophysiology of the disorder in girls, while distinct mechanisms may exist in boys. This study proposed to examine the topological properties and their temporal dynamics of the sustained attention network in preadolescent children with binge eating symptoms (BE) and matched controls and to test the relation of these properties to circulat

In vitro and in silico evaluation of synthesized 4-Anilinoquinazoline derivatives as potential anticancer agents.

Twenty-three 4-anilinoquinazoline derivatives were successfully synthesized, including six new compounds (8, 9, 12, 17, 19, 20) and seventeen known compounds. Seventeen derivatives (10-26) were evaluated for cytotoxic activity against three cancer cell lines (A549, HepG2, and SH-SY5Y) using the MTT assay. The results showed that compound 13 exhibited high selectivity toward the SH-SY5Y cell line with an IC50 value of 13.1 µM, while compound 26 displayed good inhibition against A549 and SH-SY5Y with IC50 values of 24.1 and 14.8 µM, respectively. The ADME analysis further indicated that compound

Prognostic impact of excessive mitochondrial fission in patients with heart failure and evaluation of mitochondrial dynamics-related miRNAs in heart failure.

Mitochondria are dynamic organelles that can change their morphology. The role of these mitochondrial dynamics in cardiomyocytes remains obscure in patients with heart failure (HF). Endomyocardial biopsies were performed consecutively in 127 HF patients, and mitochondrial morphology data were obtained from 111 patients by electron microscopy. The patients were divided into three groups according to mitochondrial area quartiles (fission [Q1, area ≤ 0.119 μm2, n = 27], normal [Q2/Q3, 0.120 μm2 ≤ area ≤ 0.178 μm2, n = 55], and fusion [Q4, area ≥ 0.179 μm2, n = 28]). In the fission group, the seru

Cascading microbial regulation of autochthonous DOM stability in a picocyanobacteria-dominated estuarine reservoir.

Estuaries serve as vital interfaces in the global carbon cycle by mediating land-ocean exchange and regulating dissolved organic matter (DOM) dynamics. However, the role of microbial communities in regulating autochthonous DOM under phosphorus-limited estuarine conditions remains insufficiently understood. This study explored the biogeochemical parameters, inorganic carbon dynamics, DOM optical properties, and algal-bacterial community composition in a picocyanobacteria-dominated estuarine reservoir subject to seasonal salinity and nutrient fluctuations. Samples were classified into three grou

Labor market entry prospects of people with visual impairments: evidence from administrative register data in the Netherlands.

The UN's Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities includes a right to equal work opportunities. People with visual impairments (VI) are targeted by this convention and experience low employment rates. The initial transition from education to labor is a predictor for later labor market participation. Exploiting administrative register data, we identified a graduated subpopulation with VI and matched them to a control group. This paper evaluates (1) group differences in various socio-economic outcomes following graduation, and (2) following initial employment. Following graduation t

Measurable residual disease (MRD) dynamics in multiple myeloma and the influence of clonal diversity analyzed by artificial intelligence.

Minimal residual disease (MRD) assessment is a known surrogate marker for survival in multiple myeloma (MM). Here, we present a single institution's experience assessing MRD by NGS of Ig genes and the long-term impact of depth of response as well as clonal diversity on the clinical outcome of a large population of MM patients; 482 MM patients at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) diagnosed from 2008 to 2020 were analyzed retrospectively. MRD assessment was performed by NGS. PFS curves were plotted by the Kaplan-Meier method. In the newly diagnosed group, 119 of 304, achieved MR

Daptomycin treatment impacts resistance in off-target populations of vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecium.

The antimicrobial resistance crisis has persisted despite broad attempts at intervention. It has been proposed that an important driver of resistance is selection imposed on bacterial populations that are not the intended target of antimicrobial therapy. But to date, there has been limited quantitative measure of the mean and variance of resistance following antibiotic exposure. Here we focus on the important nosocomial pathogen Enterococcus faecium in a hospital system where resistance to daptomycin is evolving despite standard interventions. We hypothesized that the intravenous use of daptom

Stability analysis on the effects of heart rate variability and premature activation of atrial ECG dynamics using ARMAX model.

The cellular action potential of cardiac muscles generates Electrocardiogram (ECG) signals. Disturbances in cardiac cells are determined by analyzing the stability of ECG intervals. The PTa Interval (PTaI) of ECG represents the atrial Action Potential Duration (APD) and the evaluation of the causes of PTaI instability can predict the onset of arrhythmia. This study developed an Autoregressive Moving Average with Exogenous Input (ARMAX) model to explore the roles of Heart Rate Variability (HRV) and Premature Activation (PA) in PTaI dynamics using PTaI and PP Interval (PPI) as exogenous inputs.

Haemin attenuates intermittent hypoxia-induced cardiac injury via inhibiting mitochondrial fission.

Obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) characterized by intermittent hypoxia (IH) is closely associated with cardiovascular diseases. IH confers cardiac injury via accelerating cardiomyocyte apoptosis, whereas the underlying mechanism has remained largely enigmatic. This study aimed to explore the potential mechanisms involved in the IH-induced cardiac damage performed with the IH-exposed cell and animal models and to investigate the protective effects of haemin, a potent haeme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) activator, on the cardiac injury induced by IH. Neonatal rat cardiomyocyte (NRC) was treated with or witho

The value of dynamic MRI in the treatment of cervical spondylotic myelopathy: a protocol for a prospective randomized clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: Cervical spondylotic myelopathy (CSM) is the most severe type of cervical spondylosis and the most common cause of spinal cord dysfunction among adults over 55 years old. MRI plays an important role in the diagnosis and evaluation of CSM, which can directly demonstrate the correlation between disc, spinal cord, posterior structures and abnormal signal in spinal cord. Static MRI can only show the static and neutral position of spinal cord, which is not enough to understand the pathogenesis of CSM. Dynamic MRI demonstrating the extension and flexion position of spinal cord can be a b

Motion analysis evaluation of adolescent athletes during dual-task walking following a concussion: A multicenter study.

BACKGROUND: Research suggests that dynamic balance in adolescents is compromised following concussion and may worsen if patients return to sport (RTS) too soon. Understanding if there are ongoing dynamic balance deficits in adolescents at the time of RTS clearance would determine if more complex motor tasks are necessary to facilitate safe RTS decisions. RESEARCH QUESTION: The purpose of this study was to determine if there were remaining dynamic balance deficits in concussed adolescents at the time of clearance for RTS. METHODS: Sixteen concussed adolescent athletes (age 14.6 ± 1.8 years; 9

Temporal dynamics of dehydration differentially regulate components of innate immunity.

Hydration state is an important regulator of vertebrate physiology, yet the temporal dynamics of hydration-associated immune responses remain poorly understood. We investigated how progressive dehydration and repeated dehydration-rehydration cycles influence innate immunity in Antaresia childreni (Children's pythons). Snakes were assigned to either a hydrated control group or a dehydration-treatment group, and plasma osmolality, agglutination, lytic ability, and bacterial killing ability were measured throughout two complementary experiments. Progressive dehydration produced stepwise increases

Who infects whom in an epidemic?

Epidemiological surveillance systems often provide data on specific characteristics of an infected population. For instance, sex, geographical location, socioeconomic level and age of the registered individuals. This allows us to study the population divided into groups. However, information on the dynamics of infected people classified by group is not usually exploited when analyzing the evolution of an epidemic. In this work, we propose a tool to analyze how the spread of an epidemic is heterogeneous among different population groups. Based on records of infected individuals we identify sync
