Visuoimaginal constructional apraxia: on a case of selective deficit of imagery.

We report a case of a patient with a left occipital lesion who presented a peculiar behavioral dissociation. He was able to copy pictures but not to draw a simple object without a visual model; the relationship among the component parts was altered in drawings produced under the guidance of his mental representations. We have called this disturbance "visuoimaginal constructional apraxia." The mechanisms underlying visuoimaginal constructional apraxia are investigated in an attempt to contribute to studies on the nature of mental imagery.

Cognitive vulnerability to auditory hallucination. Preferred imagery mode and spatial location of sounds.

Goldstone and Sarbin proposed that auditory hallucinations occur because imagery in a non-preferred sensory mode is more easily misinterpreted as having an external origin. This led to the hypothesis that auditory hallucinators would show less preference for auditory than for visual imagery. Our results suggest that this is true. We also compared the vividness of internally-generated auditory imagery with that of visual imagery, independently of preference, to see whether vividness was impaired in the nonpreferred mode in hallucinators. The evidence suggested that this was not the case, but we

Towards a theory of auditory hallucinations: outline of an hypothetical four-factor model.

The research findings of the writer to date on auditorily hallucinated patients are briefly summarized and an hypothetical four-factor model outlined to account for them. This general working model envisages auditory hallucinations as stemming from the interaction of psychological stress with an underlying hallucinatroy predisposition which is to a large extent genetically determined. A third factor of external stimulation is seen as exerting an inhibitory effect on the conscious experience of the hallucination. While a fourth speculative factor of a positive feedback loop is introduced to acc

Technology and the psychology of experience: A temporal framework.

Technology is increasingly central to how people experience the world, shaping not only what they do but when and how those experiences are psychologically constructed. We propose that technology does not merely backdrop experiences; it transforms them, stretching what were once bounded episodes into representations that are imagined before, lived through, and relived long after they end. In this article, we offer a temporal framework that synthesizes recent research on how technology reshapes experiences before, during, and after they unfold. Then, we use this framework to evaluate the curren

Uncertainty and Regimes of Temporality Among Girls and Women with Turner Syndrome in France.

Based on ethnographic fieldwork with people living with Turner syndrome in France, in this article we analyze the relationship between uncertainty and temporalities specific to rare diseases. We first show how the syndrome requires a work of interpretation to decipher an opaque body and the desynchronization between bodily changes and age positions. We then analyze how the delay in information and diagnosis can change the perception and consequences of the disease. Finally, we show how new treatments or biotechnologies provide new imagined futures, multiplying choices but also the risk of fail

The 115 Year Old Multicomponent Bargellini Reaction: Perspectives and New Applications.

Despite its uniqueness, the Bargellini multicomponent reaction remains barely known by the most part of chemists. This can be ascribed to the fact that this transformation has not been adequately reviewed in the classic books of named reactions in organic chemistry. Nevertheless, several works on this reaction have been carried out over the years, many of them were written in Italian in the period 1929-1966. In this review article we extensively cover, in a chronological order, the most important applications of the Bargellini reaction reported to date, with the hope that this knowledge-sharin

A simple management option for chronically impacted sharp tracheobronchial foreign bodies in children.

Distally impacted chronic tracheobronchial sharp foreign bodies in children are a management challenge that presents with clinical subtlety and extreme variability. The use of image guided techniques, imaginative instrumentation, tracheotomy, thoracotomy, and even extracorporeal membrane oxygneation have been reported. Endoscopy is made difficult by the distal location, inflammatory reaction with granulation tissue formation, and bleeding obscuring the foreign body. Our aim is to describe our experience with two children who had removal of aspirated impacted sharp metallic foreign bodies from

Brain simulation of action may be grounded in physical experience.

An intriguing quality of our brain is that when actions are imagined, corresponding brain regions are recruited as when the actions are actually performed. It has been hypothesized that the similarity between real and simulated actions depends on the nature of motor representations. Here we tested this hypothesis by examining S.D., who never used her legs but is an elite wheel chair athlete. Controls recruited motor brain regions during imagery of stair walking and frontal regions during imagery of wheel chair slalom. S.D. showed the opposite pattern. Thus, brain simulation of actions may be g

Massive hemorrhage in pregnancy caused by a diffuse cavernous hemangioma of the rectum--EUS as imaging modality of choice.

Hemorrhoidal bleeding is common during pregnancy. Other preexisting anorectal conditions can also be exacerbated by the increased vascular volume and pelvic congestion. We present the case of a young woman who developed life-threatening rectal bleeding requiring early delivery. Through use of endorectal endoscopic ultrasonography (EUS), the condition was diagnosed as a diffuse cavernous rectal hemangioma. To our knowledge, this is the first report to present Doppler images of pulsatile flow through the cavernous hemangioma. The EUS findings are correlated with those of computed tomography (CT)

RK2, a glial-specific homeodomain protein required for embryonic nerve cord condensation and viability in Drosophila.

We report the identification of RK2, a glial-specific homeodomain protein. RK2 is localized to the nucleus of virtually all embryonic and imaginal glial cells, with the exception of midline glia. Embryos mutant for the gene encoding RK2 are embryonic lethal but normal for early gliogenesis (birth, initial divisions and migration of glia) and axonogenesis (neuronal pathfinding and fasciculation). However, later in development, there are significantly fewer longitudinal glia that are spatially disorganized; in addition, there is a slight disorganization of axon fascicles and a defective nerve co

[Treatment of stress incontinence].

This is an introducing survey at the symposium "New techniques in gynaecology and obstetrics" held 25th and 26th of October, 1990, in Rostock. Surgery of urinary incontinence is not sufficient despite improving choice of methods. Therefore each new solution is welcome. In our times suprapubic colposuspension operations are the most interesting ones. Using fibrin sealing could be advantageous, if it would be possible, to limit sealing area and following tissue consolidation to the pubourethral ligaments. Sealing of fascial sutures and avoiding of vaginal adhesions in cases of vaginal repair wou

Therapeutic manipulation of nightmares and the management of neuroses.

Seven cases of nightmare were treated by simple rehearsal of the nightmare and/or rehearsal with an altered ending, followed by earlier introduction of the ending. One-year follow-up of five patients showed complete relief from nightmares in the four patients who achieved early introduction of a 'masterful' ending, and marked improvement in the patient who could only imagine a neutral ending. All but one of the patients also presented with neurotic symptoms (anxiety, phobias, depression and compulsion/obsession). These were treated by rational discussion and the formulation of positive 'threat

A Rare Event With High Acuity: A Case of Autonomic Dysreflexia.

Autonomic dysreflexia (AD) presents a unique circumstance that many learn about in school but seldomly see in clinical practice. In this case study, AD is identified in a higher-level spinal cord injury (SCI) than what is typically imagined. In this case, physical and pharmacologic techniques are used to mitigate AD. Additionally, the procedure is still performed using various pharmacologic agents and collaborative efforts from the surgical and anesthesia team. A unique discussion on differentials and treatment options for AD is then presented. In conclusion, anesthesia providers must recogniz

Anatomy, physiology, and evaluation: Bowel, bladder, and sexual disorders.

Our present understanding of bowel and bladder control has changed dramatically with the introduction of functional imagining technologies such as PET, SPECT, fMRI scanning, and near-infrared spectroscopy of the brain. Urologists tend to see control of urination and defecation as processes that occurred at or below the level of the pons for the most part. In this chapter, we examine the control of storing and emptying of urine and stool from what will be a more neurocentric perspective, integrating the frontal lobes into the process and moving beyond the pons on which most of the literature ha

The Effect of Antimony (III) Oxide on the Necessary Amount of Precursors Used in Laser-Activated Coatings Intended for Electroless Metallization.

The article presents research on the potential use of organometallic compounds with the addition of antimony (III) oxide Sb2O3 as a coating additive that will make coatings susceptible to electroless metallization after prior surface irradiation with 193 nm wavelength laser radiation and a different number of laser pulses. The surface modification and activation effects were assessed by optical-imagining as well as by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with energy dispersive analysis (EDX). It was found that the presence of Sb2O3 in the coating made it possible to reduce the content of the cop

[Secondary osteoporosis. Bone metabolism disorder after gastrointestinal surgery.].

Bone metabolism disorder caused by surgery and diseases of the gastrointestinal tract has been reported formerly, however the awareness of these disorder is not high. Calcium is absorbed mainly from the duodenum to the upper jejunum, moreover gastric acid plays an important role in digestion and absorption of calcium. Therefore, it is easy to imagine that gastrectomy will cause bone metabolism disorder. Furthermore, bone metabolism disorder accompanies with inflammatory bowel disease is drawing attention in recent years. Bone metabolic disorder accompanying with gastrointestinal dysfunction is

Role of the calcium store in uterine contractility.

This article assesses the nature of the sarcoplasmic reticulum (SR) in uterine smooth muscle. Modern imagining techniques have revealed new information about the location and density of Ca storage and release. Release mechanisms, including IP(3) and Ca itself, via ryanodine receptors (RyR), as well as possible roles for cyclic ADP ribose, and the contribution of the SR to relaxation are detailed. The role of the SR Ca-ATPase in both decay of the Ca transient and maintaining Ca homeostasis is reviewed. Recent data on the role of local Ca signals from the SR in contributing to membrane excitabil

Is focal task-specific dystonia limited to the hand and face?

Focal task-specific dystonia (FTSD) of the hand and face have been well described; however, FTSD of the leg is exceedingly rare. We describe and demonstrate by videotape 2 patients with FTSD affecting the leg, in both cases triggered specifically by walking down steps. Walking on a level surface, up steps, and down steps backward, and sideways were normal. An interoceptive sensory trick (imagining walking in a different modality) led to temporary improvement. Our patients appear to demonstrated that task-specificity in focal dystonia may not be limited to skilled, rehearsed actions and that FT

The meaning of signs: diagnosing the French pox in early modern Augsburg.

This article reconstructs the diagnostic act of the French pox in the French-disease hospital of sixteenth-century Augsburg. It focuses on how the participants in the clinical encounter imagined the configuration of the pox and its localization in the human body. Of central importance for answering this question is the early modern conception of physical signs. It has been argued that it was due to a specific understanding of bodily signs and their relationship to a disease and its causes, that disease definition and classification in the early modern period showed a high degree of flexibility

Treatment of hyperhidrosis with botulinum toxin.

Focal idiopathic and episodic eccrine sweating of the axillae, palms, soles, and face troubles afflicted individuals with a social curse that can only be imagined by those whose hands or underarms dampen only occasionally. Although there is no accurate incidence in the epidemiology literature, it seems that about half of the patients who have presented to the author with this condition have at least one first-degree relative similarly affected. Social stigma, lack of understanding on the part of medical providers as to the cause and nature of the problem, and lack of effective therapy keeps mo
