Warthin tumor (WT) owing to its heterogeneous appearance, biological behavior and multicentricity poses a diagnostic challenge to cytologists worldwide. We report a rare double pathology of mucoepidermoid carcinoma (MEC) with WT which was diagnosed by fine needle aspiration (FNA). Cytological smears revealed sheets of epithelial cells and small clusters of squamous cells in a background of mucoid material along with a few small groups and scattered oncocytic cells and inflammatory cells (mainly lymphocytes). In view of the cytological findings various differentials such as oncocytic lesions, b

INTRODUCTION: Malignant transformation is a rare complication of mature cystic teratoma, with squamous cell carcinoma as the most common malignancy (in 75% of cases). In this article we present a case of a well-differentiated squamous cell carcinoma arising in a mature cystic teratoma and discuss the morphological and clinico-pathological features of malignant transformation in teratoma.
CASE REPORT: An 80-year-old woman with symptoms of acute abdomen underwent left salpingo-oophorectomy. Gross examination showed a cystic mass measuring 20 cm in diameter, with papillary formation on its inter

Myeloid sarcoma is a rare tumor composed of myeloid cells, localized in an extramedullary site, which may be associated with a concurrent myeloid neoplasm involving the bone marrow, although such an association is not required. Most patients present with acute myeloid leukemia and their prognosis is poor. We describe the case of a 76-year old woman with an adenocarcinoma of the right colon infiltrating the subserosa synchronous with a myeloid sarcoma at the same site; one pericolic lymph node was infiltrated by both tumors. The peculiarities of this case are the clinical presentation (as an ac

Swyer syndrome is known as pure gonadal dysgenesis. Individuals with Swyer syndrome are phenotypically female with unambiguously female genital appearance at birth, and normal Mullerian structures. The condition usually first becomes apparent in adolescence with delayed puberty and amenorrhea due to the fact that the gonads have no hormonal or reproductive potential. These individuals are characterized by 46XY karyotype, primary amenorrhea, tall stature, female external genitalia and normal but hypoestrogenised vagina and cervix. A high incidence of gonadoblastoma and germ cell malignancies ha

Multiple schwannomas arising from the mediastinal vagus nerve are very rare, but herein we report a case with such lesions involving the bilateral intrathoracic vagus nerves. A 43-year-old man presented with multiple mediastinal tumors during a check-up. A chest computed tomographic scan revealed multiple lesions that appeared strung together like beads along the right vagus nerve. Three small tumors were also evident on the left side of the esophagus. We performed a complete resection of the bilateral mediastinal tumors through right thoracoscopic surgery. The pathologic diagnosis for each of

BACKGROUND: Patients with squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the oropharynx have an 8% to 20% risk of a synchronous or metachronous second malignancy. The rate of synchronous lesions in human papillomavirus (HPV)-positive oropharyngeal cancers is unknown.
METHODS: We report the case of a 46-year-old man with 3 simultaneous primary malignancies of Waldeyer's ring: HPV-positive SCC of both tonsils and the nasopharynx, with bilateral neck metastases.
RESULTS: The patient received induction chemotherapy followed by definitive radiotherapy and remains free of disease at 18 months.
CONCLUSION: Comp

Lipoma within jejunal duplication presenting as abdominal bloating and partial intestinal obstruction is an exceptional clinical entity. We report a case of 68-year-old man complaining of abdominal bloating for 10 d due to multiple lipomas arising from jejunal duplication cysts. Only a few cases of a single lipoma within a Meckel's diverticulum giving rise to this clinical scenario have been reported in the English language literature. However, no case of multiple lipomas within jejunal duplication cysts has been reported. We present a case in which double-balloon endoscopy revealed a small in

BACKGROUND: Coexistence of gastrointestinal stromal tumor with synchronous or metachronous colorectal cancer represents a phenomenon with increasing number of relative reports in the last 5 years. Synchronous occurence of GISTs with other gastrointestinal tumors of different histogenesis presents a special interest. We herein report a case of GIST in Meckel's diverticulum synchronous with colorectal adenocarcinoma.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 69 year old man, presented with abdominal distension and anal bleeding on defecation. Colonoscopy revealed colorectal cancer and a low anterior resection was p

Mucinous cystadenomas of the appendix are rare, with significant malignant potential [Lo and Sarr in Hepatogastroenterology 50(50):432-437, 2003]. Carcinoid tumours are similarly uncommon, rarely occurring in Meckel's diverticula but are still the commonest tumour of Meckel's diverticulae [Nies et al. in Dis Colon Rectum 35(6):589-596, 1992; Modlin and Lye in Cancer 97(4):934-959, 2003; Sutter et al. in Schweiz Med Wochenschr Suppl 89:20S-24S, 1997; Weber and McFadden DW in J Clin Gastroenterol 11(6):682-686, 1989]. We aimed to assess the incidence of multiple primary malignancies in primary lung cancer patients. We retrospectively evaluated the clinical files of 1038 primary lung cancer patients diagnosed in 2004. Forty patients (3.9 %) had multiple primary malignancies. There were 34 men (85 %) and 6 women (15 %). Their mean age was 62.4 +/- 8.6 years. While 35 cases were smokers, 5 cases were nonsmokers. Tumour pathology of the lung was squamous cell carcinoma in 15 cases, adenocarcinoma in 10 cases, small cell carcinoma in 3 cases and non-small cell carcinoma in 12 cases. There were 2 primary tumours

Here, we report the case of patient with multiple gastric carcinoids showing histopathological behavior similar to that of type I carcinoid tumors of the stomach. The patient was a 61-year-old man diagnosed as having a gastric tumor, which was revealed by follow-up computed tomography. Upper gastrointestinal endoscopy revealed a protruded tumor in the greater curvature and a small polyp in the anterior wall of the upper stomach. A biopsy revealed gastric carcinoid. Because he refused to be operated for gastric carcinoid, upper gastrointestinal endoscopy was performed 5 months later. A malignan

We describe the case of a 59-year-old Caucasian male who presented to the outpatient clinic with intractable hiccups, upper abdominal pain, repeated bouts of vomiting, and stiff neck. Physical examination revealed a cachectic male with pallor, with enlarged left supraclavicular Virchow's lymph node and hepatosplenomegaly. Histologic examination of the excised lymph node revealed simultaneous presence of 2 malignant processes, nodular sclerosing classical Hodgkin's lymphoma and metastatic adenocarcinoma. Subsequent investigations of the patient, revealed the presence of gastric adenocarcinoma.

Renal angiomyolipoma is a benign kidney tumor, which is characterized by the presence of mature or immature fat tissue, thick-walled blood vessels, and smooth muscles. However, there is a rare possibility of transformation to a malignancy. This transformation could be toward sarcoma. And also angiomyolipoma could be associated with renal adenocarcinoma in the same kidney. The aim of this study is to show the association of angiomyolipoma with complex clinical situations such as malign transformation, simultaneous occurrence with adenocarcinoma, bilateral tumors with tuberous sclerosis or Wunde

We present an extremely rare case of ovarian serous cystadenoma with mural nodules of rhabdomyoma. The patient, a 48-year-old woman, was admitted to our hospital with left lower abdominal pain and vaginal bleeding. A unilocular cystic tumor, measuring 13 x 10 x 10 cm, was found in her left ovary and was removed. The tumor contained clear serous fluid, approximately 600 mL, and 2 mural nodules, up to 7.5 x 5.5 x 4.5 cm. The internal cystic wall was thin for the most part and lined with ciliated cuboidal epithelium without any malignant feature. The mural part was composed of mainly more mature
