Patients' Perceptions of Stress Urinary Incontinence Treatment: A Scoping Review of Qualitative Studies.

INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS: Treatment options for female stress urinary incontinence (SUI) are often offered in a stepped-care approach. However, the shift towards patient-centred care and shared decision making (SDM) has prompted an increased interest in patients' perceptions of treatment decision making. This scoping review maps the available qualitative research on women's perceptions of the treatment decision-making process for SUI and identifies knowledge gaps. METHODS: This scoping review was performed according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic review and Meta-Analysis g

Exclusion of Families Who Speak Languages Other than English from Federally Funded Pediatric Trials.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether individuals in the United States who speak languages other than English (LOE) are excluded from federally funded pediatric clinical trials and whether such trials adhere to the National Institutes of Health policy regarding inclusion of members of minority groups. STUDY DESIGN: Using ClinicalTrials.gov, we identified all completed, federally funded, US-based trials inclusive of children ≤17 and focused on one of 4 common chronic childhood conditions (asthma, mental health, obesity, and dental caries) as of June 18, 2019. We reviewed ClinicalTrials.gov online co

Advancing Peripheral Artery Disease Quality of Care and Outcomes Through Patient-Reported Health Status Assessment: A Scientific Statement From the American Heart Association.

Peripheral artery disease (PAD) is chronic in nature, and individualized chronic disease management is a central focus of care. To accommodate this reality, tools to measure the impact and quality of the PAD care delivered are necessary. Patient-reported outcomes (PROs) and instruments to measure them, that is, PRO measures, have been well studied in the research and clinical trial context, but a shift toward integrating them into clinical practice has yet to take place. A framework to use PRO measures as indicators of the quality of PAD care delivered, that is, PRO performance measures (PRO-P

'No "Sane" Person Would Have Any Idea': Patients' Involvement in Late Nineteenth-century British Asylum Psychiatry.

In his 1895 textbook, Mental Physiology, Bethlem Royal Hospital physician Theo Hyslop acknowledged the assistance of three fellow hospital residents. One was a junior colleague. The other two were both patients: Walter Abraham Haigh and Henry Francis Harding. Haigh was also thanked in former superintendent George Savage's book Insanity and Allied Neuroses (1884). In neither instance were the patients identified as such. This begs the question: what role did Haigh and Harding play in asylum theory and practice? And how did these two men interpret their experiences, both within and outside the a

From birth plan to birth partnership: enhancing communication in childbirth.

Birth plans were developed with the intention of enhancing a woman's prepared decision-making in the labor and delivery process and to offer obstetric care providers with important details about those decisions. Through the use of birth plans, women can reflect on their values and choices regarding what care practices and interventions they do and do not want in birth; they can communicate these values in advance to their care providers. However, birth plans are often ineffective at accomplishing their goals for a number of reasons. They may reflect outdated concerns about routine practices or

Children's experiences of participation in the cleft lip and palate care pathway.

AIM: This qualitative study sought to explore children's perspectives on their participation in the cleft lip and palate care pathway. DESIGN: Eight boys and nine girls (aged 8-17 years), with a range of cleft types and who were patients at a British dental hospital each took part in two child-centred interviews which incorporated participatory activities. An initial interview focused on children's general life stories, and these often encompassed a discussion about cleft lip and/or palate. A follow-up interview explored specific aspects of the condition and its related treatment. RESULTS: D

Equine pituitary pars intermedia dysfunction: Identifying research priorities for diagnosis, treatment and prognosis through a priority setting partnership.

Pituitary pars intermedia dysfunction (PPID) is the most prevalent endocrine disorder of older equids. To date, key research areas likely to have the greatest impact on equine health have not been identified. In human medicine, public and patient involvement is widely used to inform research agendas. This study aimed to engage with veterinary surgeons and horse owners to identify evidence gaps ('uncertainties') and prioritise these into a list of the 10 most important PPID research questions. The James Lind Alliance (JLA) Priority Setting Partnership (PSP) Framework was adapted. Questions abou

Shared Decision-Making for Periodontally Compromised Teeth: Study Protocol for an Ongoing Prospective Multicenter Before-and-After Clinical Trial.

Treatment decisions for teeth with poor periodontal prognosis are often complicated, requiring careful balancing of clinical evidence and patient values. Shared decision-making (SDM) is increasingly recognized as a beneficial approach to align clinical judgment with patient preferences. However, structured SDM implementation in dental settings remains limited. This study was designed to evaluate the effectiveness of a structured SDM protocol compared to usual care decision-making for patients with severe periodontitis and hopeless-prognosis teeth. A multicenter, before-and-after clinical trial

How Do Patient Decision Aids Enable Purposeful Shared Decision-Making in Rheumatology? An Integrative Review.

OBJECTIVE: Shared decision-making (SDM) is a process in which patients and clinicians work together to make health care decisions. Purposeful SDM (PSDM) is a problem-based approach that emphasizes the multifaceted nature of SDM in response to different settings and contexts. In this integrative review, we systematically identify rheumatology patient decision aids (PDAs) described in peer-reviewed published literature and assess how they support PSDM. METHODS: Articles were identified through a search of Ovid MEDLINE, EMBASE, CINAHL, and PsycINFO from 1948 to 2023. This search was supplemented
