Kinetic disposition of an emulsifiable concentrate formulation of deltamethrin applied to sheep in a plunge-dip and its effect on lice.

An emulsifiable concentrate formulation of the synthetic pyrethroid insecticide deltamethrin was applied in a plunge dip, 3 weeks after shearing, to a group of 5 Merino sheep infested with sheep body lice, Bovicola ovis. Deltamethrin concentrations on the wool were measured at regular intervals between 1 and 98 days after treatment and were not significantly different (P > 0.05) between sites on the dorsal mid-line, upper or lower flank. Levels in the tip of the fleece were significantly greater than those in the base, indicating that there was little movement of deltamethrin down the staple a

Permethrin resistance in the head louse Pediculus capitis from Israel.

Head lice, Pediculus capitis, were collected from children aged 3-12 years in Maale Adumin, a town near Jerusalem, after reports of control failure with the pyrethroid insecticide permethrin. A total of 1516 children were examined: living lice and eggs were found on 12.1% of the children; or another 22.8% of the children only nits were found. Twice as many girls as boys (8.1% v 4%) were infested with lice and or nits. Head lice collected from infested children were exposed to permethrin impregnated filter-papers. Log time probit mortality (ltp) regression lines were calculated for mortality da

Studies on the teratogenic effects of deltamethrin in rats.

Deltamethrin is a pyrethroid insecticide used to eradicate external parasites on farm animals. Residues of this pesticide were shown to be present in food from animal origin which encouraged us to investigate the effects of deltamethrin on foetuses of pregnant rats. Literature search shows that previous research was focused on organochlorine and organophosphate pesticides whereas little attention was given to the newer pyrethroid insecticides. Four groups of pregnant rats (20 rats each) were given either the vehicle (control) or doses of 1, 2.5 or 5 mg/kg b. w. of deltamethrin orally from day

Vortex-assisted liquid-liquid microextraction based on natural deep eutectic solvents for the determination of pyrethroid pesticides in urine.

A novel, facile, and environmentally friendly analytical method was developed based on vortex-assisted liquid-liquid microextraction and high-performance liquid chromatography with diode-array detection for detecting pyrethroid pesticides (PPs) in urine. Natural deep eutectic solvents (NADESs) were prepared using plant essential oil-derived monoterpenoids (thymol, carvacrol, and menthol) combined with aromatic primary alcohols (benzyl alcohol, phenethyl alcohol, and phenylpropyl alcohol) as hydrogen bond donors and acceptors. These solvents served as environmentally benign extraction media, th

Anopheles coluzzii from Sakassou, Central Côte d'Ivoire show aggravated resistance to pyrethroids and organophosphate but are fully susceptible to clothianidin.

BACKGROUND: Insecticide-based interventions, including insecticide-treated nets (ITNs) and indoor residual spraying (IRS), are central to malaria vector control in sub-Saharan Africa. In Côte d'Ivoire, increasing insecticide resistance in the key malaria vector, Anopheles gambiae sensu lato (An. gambiae s.l.), has been reported across the country, potentially compromising the current ITN-based control strategy. To assess the feasibility of supplementing control efforts with IRS using clothianidin as an alternative insecticide in areas with high malaria prevalence, we have examined the intensit

Genotypic detection of synthetic pyrethroid and organophosphate resistance-associated mutations in Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus infesting ruminants across three agro-ecological zones in Pakistan.

Acaricides are used to control ticks; however, their irrational use may lead to resistance, making tick control more difficult. This study aimed to determine the spatial distribution of ticks and detect genetic mutations associated with resistance to organophosphates (OPs) and synthetic pyrethroids (SPs) in Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus ticks in Punjab, Pakistan. Ticks were collected from livestock farms across three agroecological zones in Punjab. They were identified morphologically and confirmed through molecular assays. The polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymo

The Screening of Aptamers and the Development of a Colorimetric Detection Method for the Pesticide Deltamethrin.

Deltamethrin (Del), a widely utilized pyrethroid pesticide, exhibits significant risks to human health due to its persistent environmental residues. This study aims to develop an efficient sensing detector for rapid Del detection through aptamer-based recognition. A modified Capture-SELEX strategy successfully identified Del-1, a high-affinity DNA aptamer demonstrating specific binding to Del with a dissociation constant (Kd) of 82.90 ± 6.272 nM. Molecular docking analysis revealed strong intermolecular interactions between Del-1 and Del, exhibiting a favorable binding energy of -7.35 kcal·mol

Metabolic resistance to pyrethroids with possible involvement of non-coding ribonucleic acids in Anopheles funestus, the major malaria vector in western Kenya.

BACKGROUND: The resurgence of Anopheles funestus, a dominant vector of human malaria in western Kenya was partly attributed to insecticide resistance. However, evidence on the molecular basis of pyrethroid resistance in western Kenya is limited. Here, we reported metabolic resistance mechanisms and demonstrated that multiple non-coding Ribonucleic Acids (ncRNAs) could play a potential role in An. funestus resistance to pyrethroid in western Kenya. Anopheles funestus mosquitoes were sampled using aspiration methods in Bungoma, Teso, Siaya, Port Victoria and Kombewa in western Kenya. The F1 prog

Evidence of microbiome contribution to the escalation of pyrethroid resistance in the major malaria vectors Anopheles gambiae s.s. and Anopheles funestus s.s.

BACKGROUND: Exacerbation of pyrethroid resistance severely jeopardises the effectiveness of malaria vector control efforts. However, the mechanisms enabling the vectors to now survive exposure to very high doses of pyrethroids remain unclear. Here, using High-throughput sequencing of the 16 S ribosomal RNA gene coupled with antibiotic treatment, we provide evidence linking the mosquito microbiome to the escalation of pyrethroid resistance in major African malaria vectors, Anopheles gambiae (s.s.) and Anopheles funestus (s.s.). RESULTS: Phenotypic characterisation of An. gambiae (s.s.) and An.

Nephrotoxic effect of cypermethrin ameliorated by nanocurcumin through antioxidative mechanism.

Cypermethrin is a pyrethroid showing nephrotoxicity by generating ROS-impaired oxidative stress and changes in inflammatory and apoptotic markers. The harmful consequences are intended to be mitigated by the imbalance between oxidants and antioxidants. The anti-inflammatory and antioxidant possessions of nanocurcumin (NC) with improved bioavailability ameliorate Cyp toxicity in rat kidneys. In our study, Group I was the control while Group II was treated alone with NC (5 mg). Group III was given 50 mg/kg of Cyp for two weeks. Groups IV, V, and VI received Cyp as in group III and co-treatment w

The impact of agrochemical pollutant mixtures on the selection of insecticide resistance in the malaria vector Anopheles gambiae: insights from experimental evolution and transcriptomics.

BACKGROUND: There are several indications that pesticides used in agriculture contribute to the emergence and spread of resistance of mosquitoes to vector control insecticides. However, the impact of such an indirect selection pressure has rarely been quantified and the molecular mechanisms involved are still poorly characterized. In this context, experimental selection with different agrochemical mixtures was conducted in Anopheles gambiae. The multi-generational impact of agrochemicals on insecticide resistance was evaluated by phenotypic and molecular approaches. METHODS: Mosquito larvae w

Field evaluation of a volatile pyrethroid spatial repellent and etofenprox treated clothing for outdoor protection against forest malaria vectors in Cambodia.

Cambodia's goal to eliminate malaria by 2025 is challenged by persistent transmission in forest and forest fringe areas, where people are exposed to Anopheles mosquito bites during the day and night. Volatile pyrethroid spatial repellents (VPSRs) and insecticide-treated clothing (ITC) could address these gaps. This study evaluated the outdoor application of one passive transfluthrin-based VPSR, four etofenprox-ITCs paired with a picaridin topical repellent, and a combination of VPSR and ITC against wild Anopheles landing in Cambodia. A 7 × 7 Latin-square study was conducted over 49 collection

Effectiveness of pyriproxyfen-pyrethroid and chlorfenapyr-pyrethroid long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs) compared with pyrethroid-only LLINs for malaria control in the third year post-distribution: a secondary analysis of a cluster-randomised controlled trial in Benin.

BACKGROUND: Malaria continues to kill approximately 650 000 people each year. There is evidence that some second-generation insecticide-treated nets, which combine insecticide formulations with different modes of action, are protective against malaria while the nets are new; however, evidence for their impact over 3 years is scarce. In this study, we report the third-year results of a cluster-randomised controlled trial assessing the long-term effectiveness of dual-active ingredient long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs). METHODS: This is a secondary analysis of a cluster-randomised controlle

Impact of Cypermethrin persistence on stomoxyine abundance and Trypanosoma Vivax infection.

Stomoxyine biting flies play a pivotal role as mechanical vectors of Animal African Trypanosomosis (AAT), inducing painful bites and significant disturbances in cattle, thereby affecting productivity. This study delves into the dynamics of cypermethrin persistence on cattle, a key measure aimed at mitigating stomoxyine populations and the associated transmission of trypanosomes. Conducted within a cattle settlement in Ido, Ibadan, southwest Nigeria, data collection occurred biennially from 2016 to 2022. Cypermethrin application followed a restricted protocol triggered by high fly density. Stom

Resistance to pyrethroids and the relationship between adult resistance and knockdown resistance (kdr) mutations in Aedes albopictus in dengue surveillance areas of Guizhou Province, China.

The Ae. albopictus mosquito has gained global attention due to its ability to transmit viruses, including the dengue and zika. Mosquito control is the only effective way to manage dengue fever, as no effective treatments or vaccines are available. Insecticides are highly effective in controlling mosquito densities, which reduces the chances of virus transmission. However, Ae. albopictus has developed resistance to pyrethroids in several provinces in China. Pyrethroids target the voltage-gated sodium channel gene (VGSC), and mutations in this gene may result in knockdown resistance (kdr). Corre

Spatial and temporal analysis on the impact of ultra-low volume indoor insecticide spraying on Aedes aegypti household density.

BACKGROUND: Aedes aegypti is the primary mosquito vector for several arboviruses, such as dengue, chikungunya and Zika viruses, which cause frequent outbreaks of human disease in tropical and subtropical regions. Control of these outbreaks relies on vector control, commonly in the form of insecticide sprays that target adult female mosquitoes. However, the spatial coverage and frequency of sprays needed to optimize effectiveness are unclear. In this study, we characterize the effect of ultra-low-volume (ULV) indoor spraying of pyrethroid insecticides on Ae. aegypti abundance within households.
