Ultra-low Ultraviolet Radiation in Office Lighting Can Moderate Seasonal Vitamin D Cycle: A Pilot Study.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Ultraviolet-B (UV-B) radiation initiates vitamin D synthesis in the skin, making sun exposure a major source of vitamin D. We aimed to determine whether office lighting containing ultra-low levels of UV-B radiation could modify the winter decline in vitamin D status in the UK, while being safe and well tolerated. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Twenty commercial office desk lamps were modified with the addition of UV-B LEDs. Ten hospital office administrative staff received UV-modified lamps with UV-on, and 10 staff received identical placebo lamps with UV switched off, in a double-blin

3D-printed individualized tooth-borne tissue retraction devices compared to conventional dental splints for head and neck cancer radiotherapy: a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Despite modern treatment techniques, radiotherapy (RT) in patients with head and neck cancer (HNC) may be associated with high rates of acute and late treatment-related toxicity. The most effective approach to reduce sequelae after RT is to avoid as best as possible healthy tissues and organs at risk from the radiation target volume. Even small geometric changes can lead to a significant dose reduction in normal tissue and better treatment tolerability. The major objective of the current study is to investigate 3D printed, tooth-borne tissue retraction devices (TRDs) compared to co

Neoadjuvant therapy for organ preservation in head and neck cancer.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: We designed two sequential trials of induction chemotherapy followed by definitive radiation in patients with potentially resectable head and neck cancer to determine whether organ preservation is feasible without apparent compromise of survival Study Design Both trials were Phase II studies. METHODS: Two clinical trials were conducted sequentially at the University of Michigan. Fifty-two patients enrolled in the first study and were treated with a planned three cycles of carboplatin and 5-fluorouracil. Patients who achieved at least 50% reduction in the size of the pri

Oral pilocarpine: a review of its pharmacological properties and clinical potential in xerostomia.

Pilocarpine is a cholinergic agonist which stimulates salivary secretion both in individuals with normal salivary gland function and in those with impaired salivary flow (xerostomia or oral dryness). A rapid increase in salivary flow rate is observed following oral pilocarpine administration and peak levels are maintained for at least 1 to 2 hours. Mean salivary flow rates after administration of pilocarpine are 2- to 10-fold higher than after placebo, and no evidence of tolerance to the pharmacological effects of the drug has been observed during prolonged administration for up to 5 months. Temperature and Ultraviolet Radiation Influence the Skin Microbiome of Humpback Whales.

The skin microbiome of humpback whales harbours diverse microbial communities that play a crucial role in host skin protection and environmental interaction. However, studies on cetacean skin microbiomes in the Southern Hemisphere focus on feeding grounds, with limited information on microbiome dynamics at breeding grounds and during migration across contrasting habitats. We characterised the skin microbiome of 46 humpback whales from two seasonal habitats: the Magellan Strait feeding ground and the Ecuadorian coast breeding ground, comparing age, sex, environmental conditions, and seawater. The evolving role of MRI in abdominopelvic emergencies: from problem-solving to first-line imaging.

Acute abdominopelvic pain requires rapid imaging triage, traditionally dominated by computed tomography (CT) and ultrasound (US). However, advances in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), including accelerated acquisition, motion-robust sequences, and non-contrast protocols, have expanded its role beyond a problem-solving tool toward selective first-line imaging in specific clinical scenarios. This review provides a decision-based framework for MRI utilization in nontraumatic abdominopelvic emergencies, integrating current evidence on diagnostic performance, workflow considerations, and clinical

[Research progress in separation surgery combined with stereotactic radiotherapy of spinal metastases].

With the continuous improvement of cancer treatment, the survival of patients with spinal metastases has been significantly prolonged. Currently, the treatment of spinal metastases presents a trend of multi-mode. Clinical surgical methods include vertebral tumor resecting spinal canal decompression and internal fixation surgery, separation surgery, minimally invasive surgery and percutaneous ablation technology, etc. Radiotherapy techniques include traditional external radiation therapy, stereotactic radiotherapy and brachytherapy, etc. The risk of vertebral tumor resecting spinal canal decomp

Dermoscopy of acute radiation-induced dermatitis in patients with head and neck cancers treated with radiotherapy.

Head and neck cancer (HNC) was the seventh most common cancer in the world in 2018. Treatment of a patient may include surgery, radiotherapy (RT), chemotherapy, targeted therapy, immunotherapy, or a combination of these methods. Ionizing radiation used during RT covers relatively large volumes of healthy tissue surrounding the tumor. The acute form of radiation-induced dermatitis (ARD) are skin lesions that appear usually within 90 days of the start of RT. This is a prospective study which compares 2244 dermoscopy images and 374 clinical photographs of irradiated skin and healthy skin of 26 pa

Treatment of hepatic metastases of colorectal cancer by robotic stereotactic radiation (Cyberknife ®).

Cyberknife(®) is a dedicated stereotactic radiotherapy device. This new technology permits precise delivery of high dose gradient radiation therapy while sparing the surrounding organs at risk. Hepatic metastases of colorectal cancer (HMCRC) are an example of a lesion where treatment with Cyberknife(®) is indicated because they are located in a radio-sensitive organ and curative treatment is based on focal eradication (resection, radiofrequency ablation,...). The local control rate at one year is reported to be 70 to 100% depending on the study. Tolerance is excellent with less than a 5% rate

Comparison of radiation-related cancer risk against baseline cancer rates in 33 countries using disability-adjusted life years (DALYs), lifetime incidence risk and lifetime mortality risks.

A risk indicator that allows for the comparison of risks caused by different factors is highly useful for enhancing public understanding. The International Commission on Radiological Protection developed the concept of 'detriment' to quantify radiation-related health effects at low doses. However, the detriment is specific to the radiation field and cannot be simply compared with other risks. In this study, the disability-adjusted life years (DALYs), lifetime incidence risk, and lifetime mortality risk due to radiation exposure were compared among 33 countries. These risk indicators were calcu

Preliminary results of randomized phase II study of etoposide plus lobaplatin or etoposide plus cisplatin with concurrent thoracic radiotherapy in the treatment of limited-stage small cell lung cancer.

The purpose is to compare the clinical efficacy and toxicity of etoposide plus lobaplatin (EL) or etoposide plus cisplatin (EP) with concurrent thoracic radiotherapy during the treatment of limited-stage small cell lung cancer (LS-SCLC). Forty-two patients with LS-SCLC were randomly divided into EL ( n = 19) or EP ( n = 23) regimens combined with thoracic intensity-modulated radiotherapy. The primary endpoint was 1-year progression-free survival (PFS) rate. The 1-, 2-, and 3-year PFS rates in the EL and EP cohorts were 50.8, 38.1, and 12.7%; and 56.5, 43.5, and 29.0%, respectively ( P = 0.527)

Long-term outcome of severe radiation enteritis treated by total parenteral nutrition.

The outcome of 31 patients with severe radiation enteritis treated by total parenteral nutrition (TPN) was analyzed. Before initiation of parenteral nutrition, 18 of the patients had not had abdominal surgery, while 13 had either a resection or an intestinal bypass for radiation enteritis. Median follow-up was 2 1/2 years (range: 1 month to 12 years) from the time of initiation of parenteral nutrition. Surgery was required in 15 cases because parenteral alimentation could not be continued. Only eight of these 15 were able to resume a normal oral intake. Total parenteral nutrition allowed oral

Evaluation of acute hematologic and long-term pulmonary toxicities of radioimmunotherapy of Cryptococcus neoformans infection in murine models.

We evaluated acute hematological and long-term pulmonary toxicity of radioimmunotherapy in murine models of Cryptococcus neoformans infection. Activities up to 250 microCi were well tolerated by healthy A/JCr mice for (213)Bi-18B7 and (188)Re-18B7 monoclonal antibodies. In infected mice, doses up to 150 microCi produced only transient toxicity. The lungs of treated mice had no evidence of radiation fibrosis.

Use of peritoneal insufflation to displace the small bowel during pelvic and abdominal radiotherapy in carcinoma of the cervix.

Peritoneal insufflation is a technique which reliably displaces small bowel from pelvic and abdominal radiotherapy fields with the aim of reducing bowel reactions which limit the dose of radiation applied to these sites. Use of this technique in five patients undergoing radiotherapy for advanced carcinoma of the cervix, and the degree of bowel displacement resulting, dosimetry, acute reactions and tolerability of the technique are presented, with discussion of the possibility of future escalation in radiotherapy dose.
