Strabismus in Unicoronal Craniosynostosis: Effect of Orbital Dysmorphology and Fronto-Orbital Advancement and Remodeling.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to determine what craniometric changes occur to both orbits of unicoronal craniosynostosis patients undergoing fronto-orbital advancement and remodeling, and which of these changes are associated with new onset of postoperative strabismus. METHODS: A retrospective analysis was performed of the preoperative and postoperative orbits of 24 unicoronal craniosynostosis patients and the orbits of 24 control subjects, totaling 144 orbits. Eight parameters were evaluated using multivariate logistic regression analysis. One of the parameters was modified orbit…

Novel Microdeletion in the X Chromosome Leads to Kallmann Syndrome, Ichthyosis, Obesity, and Strabismus.

BACKGROUND: A large deletion in Xp22.3 can result in contiguous gene syndromes, including X-linked ichthyosis (XLI) and Kallmann syndrome (KS), presenting with short stature, chondrodysplasia punctata, intellectual disability, and strabismus. XLI and KS are caused by the deletion of STS and ANOS1, respectively. METHOD: Two KS patients with XLI were screened to identify possible pathogenic mutations using whole exome sequencing. The clinical characteristics, molecular genetics, treatment outcomes, and genotype-phenotype association for each patient were analyzed. RESULTS: We identified a nove…

Acute, severe dystonia after strabismus surgery in a patient on propofol, ondansetron, and bupropion.

Acute, severe dystonia is a frightening and potentially life-threatening surgical complication. We describe the case of a 41-year-old woman who experienced postoperative drug-induced dystonia after elective strabismus surgery. In this case, the medications likely responsible were propofol, ondansetron, and, possibly, bupropion.

A case of linear scleroderma "en coup de sabre" with strabismus fixus in a child.

Scleroderma, "en coup de sabre" is a rare disorder, characterized by linear depressed scarring at frontoparietal area of the face, seldom associated with ophthalmological findings. Extraocular muscle involvement and paralytic strabismus are rarely associated with linear scleroderma. Here we are reporting a case of unilateral linear scleroderma in an 8-year-old child, with features of strabismus fixus secondary to fibrosed medial rectus (MR) muscle, enophthalmos and en coup de saber (sword-like scar) on the eyebrow. MRI orbit was suggestive of the bulky MR and the inferior rectus muscle. MR rec…

Transient ischemic attack characterized by external strabismus of the left eye: A case report.

RATIONALE: Patients rarely display eye movement dysfunctions as the primary symptom in transient ischemic attack. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 58-year-old patient with a history of hypertension and smoking presented with a 1-month history of paroxysmal exotropia of the left eye and double vision. No obvious abnormality was found in imaging examination and the patient ignored his symptoms. Eleven days later, the symptoms worsened and brain imaging provided an abnormal signal involving the left cerebellar hemisphere and the bilateral occipital lobe. DIAGNOSES: Based on the clinical manifestation and im

What information can we give to the patient about the risks of strabismus surgery.

I hope to report the type, incidence, and clinical outcomes of severe complications from strabismus surgery in the United Kingdom and to help in the discussions involved in the consent process. The main part of the talk will revolve around a BOSU (British Ophthalmic Survey Unit) investigation. Cases were identified prospectively between 1 September 2008 and 31 August 2010. Questionnaire data were requested at the time of the complication recognition and at 6 months' follow-up. Outcome was graded I-V, with a poor or very poor outcome meaning either loss of corrected visual acuity or primary pos…
