Mortality hazard associated with prescription hypnotics.

BACKGROUND: The American Cancer Society's Cancer Prevention Study II was a large survey designed primarily to examine cancer risks such as cigarette smoking. From the same survey and methods, data on usage of "prescription sleeping pills" in 1982 were examined. METHODS: Standardized mortality ratios were computed. Because sleeping pill use could be a proxy for other risk factors, cox proportional hazards models were computed to control for possible confounding factors as extensively as the data permitted. RESULTS: Men and women who reported taking prescription sleeping pills 30+ times in the

Dissection following balloon angioplasty of aortic coarctation: review of the literature.

Balloon angioplasty of the coarctation of the aorta can result in intimal or medial or even adventitial dissections as demonstrated by in vitro studies and animal experiments. As a typical sign of stretching of the aortic wall, patients complain of pain during the angioplasty procedure. In the literature, aortic wall rupture and ventricular fibrillation during the procedure are reported. Additional sudden deaths can occur within 40 hours after the procedure. Mortality ranges from 0.1% to 2.5%. By transesophageal echocardiography, monitoring of balloon angioplasty, control of the positioning of

Fabric-elasticity relationships of tibial trabecular bone are similar in osteogenesis imperfecta and healthy individuals.

Osteogenesis Imperfecta (OI) is an inherited form of bone fragility characterised by impaired synthesis of type I collagen, altered trabecular bone architecture and reduced bone mass. High resolution peripheral computed tomography (HR-pQCT) is a powerful method to investigate bone morphology at peripheral sites including the weight-bearing distal tibia. The resulting 3D reconstructions can be used as a basis of micro-finite element (FE) or homogenized finite element (hFE) models for bone strength estimation. The hFE scheme uses homogenized local bone volume fraction (BV/TV) and anisotropy info

Optimizing dose rate to minimize delivery time in proton pencil beam dose-driven continuous scanning.

BACKGROUND: Dose-driven continuous scanning (DDCS) enhances the efficiency and precision of proton pencil beam delivery by reducing beam pauses inherent in discrete spot scanning (DSS). However, current DDCS optimization studies using traveling salesman problem (TSP) formulations often rely on fixed beam intensity and computationally expensive interpolation for move spot generation, limiting efficiency and methodological robustness. PURPOSE: This study introduces a Break Spot-Guided (BSG) method, combined with two acceleration strategies-dose rate skipping and bounding-to optimize beam intens

Real-time computation of the TMS-induced electric field in a realistic head model.

Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is often targeted using a model of TMS-induced electric field (E). In such navigated TMS, the E-field models have been based on spherical approximation of the head. Such models omit the effects of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and gyral folding, leading to potentially large errors in the computed E-field. So far, realistic models have been too slow for interactive TMS navigation. We present computational methods that enable real-time solving of the E-field in a realistic five-compartment (5-C) head model that contains isotropic white matter, gray matter, CSF

Adult diagnostic reference levels in computed tomography: A systematic review and analysis of regional variability.

BACKGROUND: Computed tomography (CT) is vital in diagnostic imaging but involves ionizing radiation, requiring careful dose management. Diagnostic Reference Levels (DRLs), recommended by the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP), serve as benchmarks for optimizing radiation doses and improving patient safety. While many DRL studies exist, most focus on individual countries, anatomical regions, or clinical indications, limiting broader applicability. This systematic review addresses this gap by analyzing adult CT DRLs across continents and major anatomical areas. It compare

Artificial intelligence in perioperative pain: a scoping review protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Perioperative pain is a major determinant of patients' experience and may influence long-term outcomes. Artificial intelligence (AI) is applied to perioperative datasets to predict acute postoperative pain, opioid requirements, analgesic-related adverse events, chronic postsurgical pain and pain trajectories. However, the evidence is dispersed across perioperative phases, clinical outcomes, data modalities and AI methodologies, while the extent to which current models address validation, interpretability, uncertainty and clinical implementation remains unclear. A simulation-based framework for tracking decision-making development in youth basketball: operationalising Vygotsky's zone of proximal development through Bayesian multilevel modelling and verbal protocol analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Sports coaching research remains polarised between direct instruction approaches emphasising feedback and repetition vs. constraints-led approaches favouring athlete discovery through task design. This debate persists partly because existing methods cannot distinguish whether athletes are genuinely internalising tactical understanding or merely following external instructions. We present a methodological simulation study proposing a framework that operationalises Cultural-Historical Activity Theory-particularly Vygotsky's Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD)-through Bayesian multil

Evaluation of various imaging methods in the differential diagnosis of intraductal papillary-mucinous tumor (IPMT) of the pancreas.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: IPMT (intraductal papillary-mucinous tumor) of the pancreas has unique clinicopathological characteristics. The lesions which show characteristic clinical features of IPMT exhibit a wide spectrum of histological types ranging from atypical hyperplasia to invasive cancer. Therefore, surgical treatment cannot be recommended for all patients with IPMT. It is necessary to assess the malignant potential of IPMT in individual patients in order to select an appropriate approach. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of endoscopic ultrasonography and intraductal ultr

Dosimetric correlation between exit dose maps and anatomical changes in head and neck cancer treatment on Halcyon-E: A gamma analysis approach.

BACKGROUND: Head and neck cancer (HNC) has a high incidence in Brazil. Although Image-Guided Radiation Therapy (IGRT) improves treatment precision, anatomical changes during the treatment course may compromise dose distribution and require replanning. PURPOSE: This study investigated the correlation between exit dose fluence and anatomical volumetric variations during HNC radiotherapy. Subsequently, a decision support methodology was proposed and validated to flag potential dosimetric deviations and guide objective replanning strategies. METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted with 11 p

Online labor trafficking and machine learning: A scoping review and research agenda.

Labor trafficking increasingly intersects with online environments, yet there are limited computational detection approaches. To examine existing methods and their potential applications, this article reviews literature that applies or advocates analytics and machine learning (ML) for detecting labor trafficking (LT). It synthesizes methodologies across two contexts: (a) internet-facilitated LT (IF-LT), where digital platforms enable recruitment and coordination of trafficking, and (b) online-accessible LT (OA-LT), where offline signals of trafficking can be retrieved from online sources. Design and validation of renal stone detection using multi-architecture feature extraction with deep sequential learning model on axial computed tomography images.

Kidney stone disease is a significant public health threat, with its prevalence escalating due to evolving dietary habits, rising rates of obesity, other medical conditions, and the use of certain supplements. A kidney stone, otherwise known as a renal calculus, is a solid mass of crystallized minerals that aggregates within the kidneys. The proper identification of this renal condition is vital because it represents a serious health issue that requires accurate detection for effective treatment. Imaging techniques play a vital role in diagnosing kidney diseases, including kidney stones. Compu

Coronary Perfusion Following a Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement in Either Reanimated Swine or Preserved Human Hearts.

BACKGROUND: Transcatheter aortic valve replacements (TAVRs) have become the predominant solution for treating patients with severe aortic valve stenosis. Meanwhile, procedural coronary obstructions and/or occlusions post-TAVR have subsequently become greater concerns as the use of TAVR increases in younger populations. Therefore, this preclinical study aimed to develop methodologies to assess coronary perfusion following a TAVR in both reanimated swine hearts and preserved human specimens perfused in a pulsatile system. METHODS: This study employed Visible Heart® methodologies to functionally

Screw preload loss under occlusal load as a predictor of loosening risk in varying dental implant designs.

PURPOSE: Screw loosening is a critical aspect of an implant design, as it can lead to implant failure. This study proposes a methodology and qualitatively assesses the potential of screw loosening risk for various types of screw heads and implant fixture-abutment connections. It is assumed that the risk of screw loosening is related to the drop in loosening moment under occlusal loads. The methodology and an assumption is verified by confronting the results with laboratory tests. METHODS: Numerical simulations supplemented with semi-empirical equations were employed to estimate a loosening mo
