This study was to determine the main health-related reasons, age and occupation of those who took early retirement. This was done through an analysis of the data from Poland's Social Insurance Institution (ZUS) from 2000 and 2001. An analysis of these data showed an increase in the number of certificates confirming total inability to work in people over 40 years old. Over 50% of certificates work were issued to workers in 2 age-groups: 45-49 and 50-54. PATIENT PRESENTATION AND DIAGNOSIS: The patient is a 73-year-old male retired house painter and ex-smoker who was admitted to the respiratory medicine department of a district hospital in Greece due to the presence of streaks of blood in his sputum. His past medical history included coronary artery disease, arterial hypertension and supraventricular tachycardia (SVT). A high resolution computed tomography (HRCT) was performed which showed enlarged mediastinal lymph nodes with evidence of fibrosis.

After a worker from a plastics factory was diagnosed with legionella pneumonia it was learnt that a retired employee at the factory had been in hospital with a serious chest infection six months before and legionella pneumonia was diagnosed in retrospect from stored serum. The likeliest common source was a machine cooling system that took water from an uncovered water tank outdoors (from which Legionella pneumophila was isolated) and which generated an aerosol through a crack in the flow meter sight glass.

Advances in heart transplantation and post-operative rejection therapy have given new hope to patients with end-stage congestive heart failure and cardiomyopathies. The growing numbers of pre- and post-transplant patients and the complexity of their care underscore the need for a multispecialty approach to patient management. This study examined the longitudinal associations and mechanisms between Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (IADL) disability and depression among middle-aged and older adults. This study aimed to examine the risk and protective factors associated with depression in middle-aged and older Chinese adults with activity limitations. In a study of 226 elderly residents in a retirement village in Sydney, Australia, general practitioners' opinions about dementia status had high positive and negative predictive values and high specificity, but low sensitivity when evaluated against the mini-mental state examination and the Blessed dementia rating scale. The timing of education across the life cycle is differentially associated with older-age health outcomes and socioeconomic status among military retirees, a subpopulation with common levels of adolescent health but variation in educational timing. To determine the prevalence of essential tremor (ET) and Parkinson's disease (PD) in a retirement community, all residents of Carefree, Arizona, aged over 65 years were contacted. All participants completed validated questionnaires for PD and ET, and were examined using the Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale. Of 356 individuals evaluated, 155 (43.5%) had tremor; 73 (20.5%) had ET; 26 (7.3%) had PD; and 56 (15.7%) had postural tremor (PT). A retired man in his 60s was referred to the on call orthopaedic team by his general practitioner following several attempts to extricate a human botfly larva from his forearm. While on holiday in Belize with his daughter 8 weeks previously they both were bitten by some insects. She developed an infestation which was treated locally. Once back in the UK, he subsequently reported of localised itching and discomfort. A botfly larva was successfully removed in the emergency department following local anaesthetic infiltration.
