Rats deficient in α-galactosidase A develop ocular manifestations of Fabry disease.

Fabry disease is an X-linked lysosomal storage disease caused by deficiency of α-galactosidase A. Ocular findings, such as cornea verticillata, cataracts, and retinal vascular tortuosity, serve as important diagnostic markers. We aimed to evaluate ocular phenotypes in α-galactosidase A-deficient (Fabry) rats and hypothesized that these rats would manifest ocular signs similar to those observed in patients. Slit lamp biomicroscopy was used to evaluate the cornea and lens, and retinal vasculature was examined by fluorescein angiography in WT and Fabry rats. Mass spectrometry was used to characte…

Resolution of Acanthamoeba Keratitis with Adjunctive Use of Oral Miltefosine.

Purpose: To report a series of cases demonstrating the resolution of Acanthamoeba keratitis (AK) with adjunctive use of oral miltefosine. Methods: Retrospective case series. Results: The first case was a 27-year-old female who presented with severe pain and photophobia. The diagnosis of AK was made with confocal microscopy, which revealed a significant burden of stromal cysts. After approximately 2 weeks of adjunctive oral miltefosine therapy, there was a severe inflammatory response within the cornea followed by quick resolution of the AK. The second case was a 31-year-old male in whom the diag

Short Report - Birth Weight is Not Associated With Cataracts or Pseudophakia - Results from the Gutenberg Health Study.

This study investigates the association between self-reported birth weight (BW) and the frequency of cataract and pseudophakia in a large population-based cohort in Germany, as part of the Gutenberg Health Study (GHS). Slit lamp examination and Scheimpflug imaging of 8205 participants, aged 35 to 74, were assessed and signs of cataract or pseudophakia analyzed. The research aimed to explore the correlation between fetal growth restriction and/or prematurity indicated by BW and the frequency of cataract and pseudophakia. In the univariable analysis, cataract was initially associated with low an…

External Ophthalmomyiasis: A Comprehensive Review and Advances in Diagnosis and Treatment.

External ophthalmomyiasis is an acute parasitic infection resulting from the infestation of ocular surface tissues by larvae of the order Diptera. It occurs more frequently in tropical and subtropical regions with inadequate sanitation, particularly among individuals in close contact with livestock. Patients often present with severe ocular irritation, including foreign body sensation, redness, pain, and increased lacrimation; severe cases may develop complications such as keratitis or intraocular involvement. Diagnosis primarily relies on the direct visualization of larvae under slit-lamp mic

Selective Bowman's layer transplantation in the treatment of neurotrophic corneal ulcers.

The aim of this paper is to present the surgical technique of selective Bowman's layer transplantation as well as the results of the surgery in patients with trophic corneal ulcers. The methodology of the study included three eyes from three patients with neurotrophic corneal ulcers grafting with corneal Bowman's layer. Pre- and postoperative analyses of the anterior segment of the eye were based on optical coherence tomography and slit-lamp assessment. Postoperatively a gradual corneal stroma restoration and fast corneal epithelialization were noticed. Based on our observations, the stiff and

A review of diseases of the retina for neurologists.

Diseases of the retina are common and numerous, with causes ranging over inherited, inflammatory, vascular, infectious, neoplastic, traumatic, toxic, and idiopathic etiologies. A key issue in the diagnosis of retinal disease is the duration of symptoms, which can be acute, chronic, or acute presentations of chronic disease. Clinical examination with direct ophthalmoscopy or, even better, biomicroscopy with a slit lamp and condensing lens, is a key component of diagnosis, which can be enhanced through investigational methods such as fluorescein angiography, optical coherence tomography, or elec…

Case of Orbital Cysticercosis Presenting as Recurrent Cellulitis Diagnosed on Multi-Modality Imaging.

Cysticercosis results in humans when infected with the larval stage of taenia solium which is called cysticercus cellulosae. The target organs usually involved are the brain, eyes, spine, and skeletal muscles. The ocular form of cysticercosis can affect the intra-ocular structures or involve the orbital adnexa. Intraocular involvement is relatively common and is readily diagnosed owing to its obvious visibility on a basic slit-lamp examination, however, affection of orbital adnexa is infrequent. Moreover, solitary involvement of one of the extraocular muscles is rare and difficult to diagnose

Forceps-induced birth injury to the cornea.

A 72-year-old man was referred for cataract surgery in the right eye. On slit-lamp biomicroscopy he was noted to have a vertical split in the Descemet's membrane in the left cornea. Based on the appearance, orientation of the split and medical history of forceps delivery, a forceps injury to the left cornea was diagnosed. The break in Descemet's membrane is characteristically vertical due to the horizontal stretching of the globe which occurs with vertical compression of the globe between the orbit and the blade of the obstetric forceps. Forceps injuries are usually unilateral and affect the l

Nd:YAG laser capsulotomy under general anesthesia in the sitting position.

Neodymium-yttrium-aluminum-garnet (Nd:YAG) laser capsulotomy is commonly used to treat posterior capsule opacification after cataract surgery in adults. Children and adults with developmental delay, however, are not always cooperative, and the procedure must be performed under general anesthesia. We describe a technique for Nd:YAG capsulotomy under general anesthesia in the sitting position using the standard widely available Nd:YAG laser. Anesthesia was induced in the supine position and the patient was then transferred to the sitting position with chin in the slit-lamp laser delivery system.

A possible port of entry into the eye of dog during erratic canine heartworm (Dirofilaria immitis) parasitism.

A dog was suspected of suffering from ectopic Dirofilaria immitis infection, because a large white nematode worm was detected in the anterior chamber of the left eye. A cylinder-shaped fibrin sac in the anterior chamber was found in the eye of the dog by slit lamp microscopy. After successful surgical removal of the worm, the corneal wound produced by the keratotomy healed in a short period. The worm was estimated to be extremely young, 5th-stage-immature male D. immitis, equivalent to a 90-120-day-old worm postinfection, by close morphological measurement and an experimental infection study. …

Pigment deposits on hydrophilic intraocular lenses after phacoemulsification cataract surgery.

A heterogeneous group of conditions can cause changes to the intraocular lens (IOL) during or after implantation in uneventful cataract surgery. We describe a series of 5 patients presenting distinctive deposits on the surface of hydrophilic intraocular lenses, implanted during routine cataract surgery, with a follow-up of 1 to 24 months. Disposable forceps were found to be the source of the pigmented marks when used to hold the lens during the injector loading process. At the slit-lamp examination, the pigments were located in the centre of the lens optic, easily detectable. Although involvin

[Sterile non-traumatic corneal perforation treated with Tachosil®].

CASE REPORT: An 83 year-old male reported to the emergency room with red eye and ocular pain. The slit-lamp examination showed a central corneal perforation of 1mm in diameter, with no associated infection or inflammatory process. The patient had no history of trauma. It was decided to apply a patch of Tachosil(®) at the site of corneal perforation. After 36 hours of occlusion, a layer of fibrin covered the perforation, closing the defect. Successful healing of the corneal perforation was observed in the follow-up, with no recurrences of the process. CONCLUSIONS: Tachosil(®) is collagen spong
