In high doses, the beta-lactams--particularly cephalosporins--can cause bleeding from impairment of prothrombin formation. We report a case of hemorrhagic syndrome in a 63-year-old woman during therapy with high doses of ampicillin for Listeria monocytogenes meningitis.

A case of pseudomembranous colitis in a 66-year-old subject is presented. The disease appeared on the fourth postoperative day following prostatectomy. On the first postoperative day ampicillin was administered intramuscularly (4 g/day). On the seventh postoperative day, toxic megacolon complicated the disease and a diverting ileostomy with decompression colostomies was performed. The patient died two days later due to severe respiratory failure following extensive bronchopulmonary infection.

Two field efficacy studies, involving a total of 80 naturally infected feedlot calves, were conducted to compare the efficacy of sulbactam-ampicillin with that of penicillin-dihydrostreptomycin in the treatment of pneumonic pasteurellosis. The present study reported a single step synthesis of silver nanoparticles using ampicillin (Amp-AgNps), a second-generation β lactam antibiotic to get nanoformulation having dual properties that of antibiotic and silver. The bacteriologies of the maxillary and ethmoid sinuses were studied in 74 chronic sinusitis patients who took ampicillin (500 mg every 6 hours) for 2 weeks preoperatively. The specimens from one ipsilateral maxillary and ethmoid sinuses were obtained when undergoing functional endoscopic sinus surgery. Seven of the 96 ampicillin-resistant isolates of Haemophilus ducreyi reported in the preceding article (Bilgeri et al., Antimicrob. Agents Chemother. 22:686-688, 1982) were investigated and found to harbor plasmids of 3.95, 5.2, 5.8, and 6.4 megadaltons. All except the 5.8-megadalton plasmid have been shown to code for beta-lactamase. The 6.4- and 5.2-megadalton plasmids of three isolates were conjugally transferable to a streptomycin-resistant mutant of H. ducreyi at high frequencies, perhaps due to the presence in these strains of a high-molecular-weight plasmid.

Three of 19 strains of Haemophilus ducreyi, isolated during a recent outbreak of chancroid, were found to produce beta-lactamase and to harbor a 6.0 x 10(6)-dalton plasmid. Escherichia coli transformed with this plasmid acquired beta-lactamase-mediated resistance to ampicillin. The guanine-plus-cytosine content of the plasmid was found to be 41 mol%.
