PURPOSE: To compare the prevalence, magnitude, and type of astigmatism among patients with different Duane Retraction Syndrome (DRS) types.
METHOD: This retrospective cross-sectional study reviewed the records of 312 DRS patients. Patients were categorized into DRS Types 1, 2, 3, and bilateral cases. Refractive errors and visual acuity were analyzed, emphasizing the prevalence of astigmatism types, specifically with-the-rule (WTR), against-the-rule (ATR), and oblique, as well as the power vectors for each DRS subtype.

Through the creation of astigmatic keratotomies, femtosecond laser can correct congenital or post-surgical astigmatism. We have been using an optimized treatment nomogram, which offers superior and more predictable results than manual incisional techniques. Femtosecond arcuate incisions allow a reduction of over 50% of the preoperative astigmatism. Nonetheless, the efficacy can likely be improved further by refining these nomograms specific to the femtosecond laser.

Excimer laser is the best and the more used technique for Astigmatism correction. Lasik is generally preferred to PRK and must be the choice for hyperopic and mix astigmatisms. The postoperative visual results after cataract surgery are sometimes disappointing because of induced astigmatism. A good wound construction is mandatory. A scleral incision, which is astigmatism neutral, is preferred. In case of corneal or limbal incision great care must be given to the placement and the tension of the sutures.

We studied all cataract surgery done at the ophthalmologic clinic of the University of Bari, Italy in the last 20 years (1966-85). We considered three methods of anterior-chamber incision (blade, Worsth's knife, Graefe's bistoury) and their effect on the dioptric values obtained from ophthalmometry a year after surgery. A series of 100 cases of intraocular implants has been considered, especially with regard to the postoperative astigmatism. This was found to be far higher than in a similar series of cases subjected to the same techniques without an implant.
