500 consecutive Danish women who had full-term babies were interviewed on the third or fourth day post partum and asked about smoking in all household members. Exposure to smoking by the mother was found to reduce birth-weight, and indirect or passive exposure to smoking by the father had nearly as large (66%) an effect. On average, birth-weight was reduced by 120 g per pack of cigarettes (or cigar/pipe equivalent) smoked per day by the father. This relation remained statistically significant after controlling for mother's age, parity, alcohol and tobacco consumption during pregnancy, illness

Factors relating to water balance in the perinatal and neonatal periods are reviewed. The major areas considered are changes in body water compartments, insensible water loss, and renal function. A most striking feature in all these areas is the wide variation in 'normal' values, both within the same infant with advancing postnatal age and also between infants of the same postnatal age but of different gestational ages. A second feature is the fluctuation caused by changes in environmental conditions, e.g., temperature, humidity, type of warming device, use of phototherapy. Much of the literat

OBJECTIVES: Low birth weight (LBW) is one of the major factors affecting child morbidity and mortality worldwide. Every day, approximately 800 women die from causes related to pregnancy and childbirth worldwide. Maternal ill health increases the risk of LBW. This study seeks to investigate determinants and incidence of LBW.
METHODS: This study was conducted based on the medical records of mothers and their 1,946 infants born in 2016-2019 at the Department of Gynaecology and Obstetrics of Louis Pasteur University Hospital in Košice. Data on mothers and newborn infants were obtained from the Re…

Infants born with complete atrioventricular block (CAVB) and fetal bradycardia are frequently born with low birth weight. Three low-birth-weight CAVB infants underwent temporary pacemaker implantation, followed by permanent single-chamber pacemaker implantation at median body weights of 1.7 and 3.2 kg, respectively. All infants caught up with their growth curves and had >3 years of estimated residual battery life. This two-stage strategy was successful in facilitating permanent pacemaker implantation in low-birth-weight babies. Placement of single-chamber pacemaker on the apex of the left vent…

INTRODUCTION: A growing number of studies have shown consistent evidence of the harmful effects of air pollution on human health, as well as its effects on newborn weight. The objective of this study is to evaluate the effect of air pollution on birth weight, more specifically the insufficient birth weight (identified between 2,500 and 2,999 grams).
METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study based on data gathered from all babies born to mothers living in São José dos Campos, São Paulo, Brazil, between the years of 2006 to 2010. The association between maternal exposure to air pollution and bi…

BACKGROUND: More than half of the world's population lives in urban environments. Due to urban related factors (e.g. higher air pollution), urban residents may face higher risk of adverse health outcomes, while access to green space could benefit health.
PURPOSE: We explored associations between urban and green land-use and birth weight.
METHODS: Connecticut, U.S., birth certificate data (2000-2006) were acquired (n=239,811), and land-use data were obtained from the National Land Cover Database. We focused on three land-uses; urban space, urban open space, and green space (i.e. forest, shrub…

Being born with low birth weight (LBW) is recognized as a disadvantage due to risk of early growth retardation, fast catch up growth, infectious disease, developmental delay, and death during infancy and childhood, as well as development of obesity and non-communicable diseases (NCDs) later in life. LBW is an indicator of fetal response to a limiting intrauterine environment, which may imply developmental changes in organs and tissue. Numerous studies have explored the effect of maternal intake of various nutrients and specific food items on birth weight (BW). Taking into account that people h…

BACKGROUND: Infants born with a higher birth weight have long been associated with an increased incidence of developing the metabolic syndrome starting from early childhood and persisting into adult life. Such risk factors include genetic tendencies as well as environmental factors. Of these, certain maternal anthropometric characteristics such as obesity or carbohydrate intolerance alter the intrauterine environment to one of nutritional plenty, thus impacting on intrauterine development. This hypernutrition pathway has led to the hypothesis of 'fuel mediated teratogenesis' and an obesogenic …

INTRODUCTION: Epidemiological studies point out that exposure to air pollution during pregnancy is a risk for low birth weight.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of outdoor and indoor air pollution on the occurrence of low birth weight.
METHODS: The measurement of outdoor air pollutants, sulphur dioxide and black smoke was carried out daily at the Institute for Public Healthcare of Nis at two measuring locations, in Nis and Niska Banja during 2003. Subjects were 367 pregnant women, nonsmokers and who were not profesionally exposed to air pollution. Data on exposure…

BACKGROUND: Low birth weight is defined as the live births with less than 2.5 kg weight. It is a key determinant of infant survival, health and development. Low birth weight infants are at a greater risk of having a disability and for diseases such as cerebral palsy, visual problems, learning disabilities and respiratory problems. To reduce the low birth weight deliveries, we studied the maternal factors which adversely affect the fetus in utero and their impact on fetus.
METHODS: A retrospective study was carried out on 40 low birth weight pregnancies out of 650 deliveries from July 2005 to …

Our aim was to investigate whether birth weight in mothers with diabetes mellitus type 1 is higher as compared to nondiabetic controls. Methods. A retrospective study was performed using an existing database covering the region of Flanders, Belgium. Data included the presence of diabetes type 1, hypertension, parity, maternal age, the use artificial reproductive technology, fetal- neonatal death, congenital anomalies, admission to a neonatal intensive care unit, and delivery by Caesarean section or vaginally. Results. In the period studied, 354 women with diabetes type 1 gave birth and were co…

Pregnancy outcomes in the United States and other developed countries are considerably better than those in many developing countries. Howev … e twice the preterm birth rate and higher rates of growth restriction than do most other women. Low birth weight in general is thought to place the infant at greater risk of later adult chronic medical conditions, such as diabetes, hypertension, and heart disease. Of interest, maternal thinness is a strong predictor of both preterm birth and fetal growth restr …

Adolescence constitutes a major transition for extremely low birth weight (ELBW) teenagers. Recent studies of ELBW teenagers born in the 1980s have provided information about the growth and developmental characteristics of these individuals in adolescence and in early adulthood. ELBW teenagers are shorter and lighter than their full-term peers, and have a smaller head circumference. Cognitive and academic vulnerabilities documented during the school years, particularly difficulties with nonverbal intelligence and arithmetic, persist into late adolescence. Many ELBW children struggle in school …

The increased survival of low birth weight infants means that more of these infants may be candidates for catheter interventions. There are few data on the results of cardiac catheterization in this group. This study aimed to analyze, retrospectively, cardiac catheterization of infants weighing < or =2.5 kg, with emphasis on the results of interventions. The complication rates of interventional and diagnostic procedures were compared. One hundred eleven catheterizations were performed in 107 patients between 1985 and 1998. Thirty-one procedures were interventional. Balloon atrial septostomy (n…
