The AIDS profile in a low risk country: the central role of bisexual men.

BACKGROUND: Policies and measures for the prevention of human immunodeficiency virus Type 1 (HIV-1) transmission require adequate information about the risk profile of AIDS which is time-, place- and population-dependent. We have studied the risk factors for AIDS among men in Greece, a country with relatively low incidence of AIDS. METHODS: A case-control study of all male patients with incident disease, who have been diagnosed in the major university-affiliated, AIDS Unit from February 1995 through August 1997 was conducted in Athens, Greece, a country with relatively low incidence of AIDS.

Psychosocial issues in primary care of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender youth.

Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender youth are at risk for a multitude of physical, emotional, and social health problems. During the past decade it has been well documented that these youth have higher-than-average rates of depression, suicide attempts, substance abuse, sexually transmitted diseases, school failure, family rejection, and homelessness. The focus of this article is to outline skills and strategies that can assist the health practitioner in creating an optimal health care experience for sexual minority youth. Models of individual and family adaptation, a clinical path, and a

Kaposi's sarcoma in a cohort of homosexual and bisexual men. Epidemiology and analysis for cofactors.

Acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) surveillance data for both the United States and San Francisco indicate that Kaposi's sarcoma is more common in homosexual and bisexual men with AIDS than in other adults with AIDS, and that the proportion of newly diagnosed AIDS cases presenting with Kaposi's sarcoma has been significantly declining over time. The changing epidemiology of Kaposi's sarcoma was analyzed in a well-characterized cohort of homosexual and bisexual men; laboratory and interview data from a sample of these men were evaluated for determinants of and cofactors associated with K

Development of a family functioning measure for Hispanic lesbian, gay, and bisexual adolescents.

INTRODUCTION: Hispanic lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) adolescents experience elevated risks for HIV-related risk behaviors, drug use, and mental-health problems. These problems may be impacted by various family functioning behaviors (e.g., communication, parental involvement). However, existing family functioning measures may not adequately capture the culturally shaped, identity-specific family processes relevant to this population. Thus, we iteratively developed a user-informed measure of family functioning for Hispanic LGB adolescents. METHODS: The study was conducted across phases from

Sincere But Suspect: Perceptions of Bisexual Women's Authentic Expression in the Dating Context.

Bisexual women balance competing sets of gender norms and many adapt their behavior and dress according to the gender of the person they are dating, part of a practice known as bisexual display. The current research explores the consequences bisexual displays have on evaluations of bisexual women's authenticity in the dating context. In Study 1 (N = 137), participants evaluated a bisexual woman as less authentic, trustworthy, and likable when she was described as behaving and dressing differently on dates with men and women. In Study 2 (N = 378), we aimed to replicate Study 1 with more ecologi

Normative Perceptions of Sexual Behavior and Alcohol Use among Bisexual Women.

Background: As compared to heterosexual and lesbian women, bisexual women report higher rates of alcohol, other substance use, and risky sexual behavior, and they experience more negative outcomes from these behaviors. Descriptive norms (i.e., perceptions of others' behavior) are an important predictor of risky behaviors, but scant research has examined whether bisexual women's perceptions of other bisexual women's alcohol use and sexual behavior are associated with their own alcohol or drug use during sex. Objectives: Consequently, the present study examined (1) whether perceived sex norms we

Recognising and responding to the community needs of gay and bisexual men around mpox.

BACKGROUND: In May 2022, a global surge in mpox cases, typically endemic to Western and Central Africa, particularly affected gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (gbMSM). This study examines gbMSM communities' experiences and perceptions around Ireland's public health response to the outbreak. METHODS: A cross-sectional mixed-methods online survey was conducted. Qualitative data were analysed using reflexive thematic analysis informed by critical realism. FINDINGS: A total of 163 gay and bisexual men took part in the survey. Participants accessed information from diverse sourc

Health Disparities Among Lesbian, Gay, and Bisexual Service Members and Veterans.

INTRODUCTION: This study investigated whether health disparities exist among lesbian, gay, and bisexual individuals serving in the U.S. military by examining the associations of sexual orientation with mental, physical, and behavioral health among a population-based sample of service members and veterans. METHODS: Sexual orientation and health outcomes were self-reported on the 2016 Millennium Cohort Study follow-up questionnaire (N=96,930). Health outcomes were assessed across 3 domains: mental health (post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, anxiety, binge eating, problematic anger), phy

Testing the Tripartite Influence Model among heterosexual, bisexual, and lesbian women.

This cross-sectional study explored similarities and differences between heterosexual, bisexual, and lesbian women in levels of, and relationships between, the following constructs using a Tripartite Influence Model framework: family, peer, and media appearance pressures, thin- and muscular-ideal internalization, and eating disorder (ED) pathology. Self-identified heterosexual (n = 1,528), bisexual (n = 89), and lesbian (n = 278) undergraduate women completed the Sociocultural Attitudes Towards Appearance Questionnaire-4 and the Eating Disorder Examination-Questionnaire. Differences in Family Health History Knowledge Among Bisexual and Lesbian Women.

PURPOSE: We aimed to determine whether there are differences between sexual minority women and heterosexual women in family health history knowledge. METHODS: We used data from Dr. Susan Love Research Foundation's The Health of Women Study®. We included women who completed two of six online surveys between 2012 and 2015 (n = 22,410). RESULTS: Compared with heterosexual women, bisexual and lesbian women had consistently greater odds of not knowing their family health history (e.g., odds ratios of 2.59 and 1.56 for breast cancer, respectively). CONCLUSION: To avoid exacerbating existing healt

The Association of Lesbian, Gay, and Bisexual Identity Facets With Smoking Dependence Motives.

INTRODUCTION: Lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) adults have higher rates of smoking than heterosexual adults. LGB individuals face unique stressors, including challenges associated with having a LGB identity. The extent to which these unique stressors are related to dependence motives in LGB adult smokers, however, has not been previously explored. The current study was conducted to redress these gaps. METHODS: Participants (N = 52; Mage = 42.8; 55.8% Black/African American) were recruited from the local community. Identity facets were measured by the Lesbian, Gay, and Bisexual Identity Scale

Depression and Victimization in a Community Sample of Bisexual and Lesbian Women: An Intersectional Approach.

Mental health inequities among bisexual and lesbian women are well-documented. Compared to heterosexual women, both bisexual and lesbian women are more likely to report lifetime depressive disorders, with bisexual women often faring the worst on mental health outcomes. Risk factors for depression, such as victimization in childhood and adulthood, are also more prevalent among bisexual women. Less is known about the intersection of racial/ethnic and sexual minority identities, and how depression and victimization may differ across these multiple, co-occurring identities. Data were from Wave 3 o

Recognition and Construction of Top, Bottom, and Versatile Orientations in Gay/Bisexual Men.

Research on gay and bisexual men's sexual position self-label (i.e., being a top, bottom, or versatile during anal sex) has revealed only independent snapshots of its development by focusing primarily on the influence of penis size. Moreover, the basic chronology of development of the sexual position self-label has barely been addressed. In response, we implemented a survey of 282 gay and bisexual men that measured demographics (including height and penis size), age of sexual recognitions, sexual position self-label, and attitudinal constructs suggested by previous literature as important (e.g

A profile of North Carolina lesbian, gay, and bisexual health disparities, 2011.

OBJECTIVES: We investigated the health profile of lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) adults in North Carolina, the first state in the South to include a measure of sexual orientation identity in a probability-based statewide health survey. METHODS: Using data from 9876 respondents in the 2011 North Carolina Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance Survey, we compared sexual minorities to heterosexuals on a variety of health indicators. RESULTS: LGB respondents were younger and more likely to be reached by cell phone. Many examined indicators were not different by sexual orientation. Significant res

Living Arrangement and Loneliness Among Lesbian, Gay, and Bisexual Older Adults.

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: Loneliness is a key health risk for older adults. Utilizing the loneliness model, we examine the relationship between living arrangement and loneliness among lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) older adults, taking into consideration potential correlates including social resources and personal constraints. DESIGN AND METHODS: We use data from a national survey of LGB adults aged 50 and older (N = 2,444). Types of living arrangement include living with a partner or spouse, living alone, and living with someone other than a partner or spouse. RESULTS: Compared with LGB older

'Just a little hint': bisexual-specific microaggressions and their connection to epistemic injustices.

A growing body of evidence indicates disproportionate rates of mental health disorders among bisexual women compared to both heterosexual and lesbian women. Such disparities are often attributed to stressors related to minority status, including experiences of prejudice and discrimination. Prior research has made little distinction between the prejudicial experiences of bisexual groups as compared to lesbian/gay groups. Based on qualitative data gathered in focus groups with 10, predominantly White, bisexual-identified women, which occurred in a large city in the USA, we posit that differences
