Pathologic interactions between the middle ear and inner ear occur with 1) congenital anomalies, 2) trauma, 3) infection/inflammation, 4) tumors, 5) granulomas, 6) ototoxic eardrops, 7) cochlear implants, 8) otosclerosis, 9) Meniere's disease (decompensated) and Meniere's disease (with perilymphatic fistula), and 10) perilymphatic hypertension. Clinical and pathological characteristics are briefly categorized in this survey. OBJECTIVE: To examine the relationship between different surgical factors and frequency-specific hearing results following surgery for chronic ear disorders.
METHODS: We reviewed retrospectively data of 246 patients with chronic ear diseases who had surgery between January 2019 and December 2020. Hearing loss, the most common human sensory defect worldwide, is a major public health problem. About 70% of congenital forms and 25% of adult-onset forms of deafness are of genetic origin. The increasing incidence of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus infections (MRSA) in ENT diseases is becoming a big clinical concern. Here two patients are described who developed MRSA infections presented with unusual post-FESS epistaxis and postmastoidectomy perichondrial abscess and failed treatment with broad spectrum intravenous antibiotics. Following treatment with oral linezolid combined with local mupirocin dressing both patients fully recovered.
