Evidence that hyperprolactinaemia is associated with ovarian acyclicity in female zoo African elephants.

African elephants of reproductive age in zoos are experiencing high rates of ovarian cycle problems (>40%) and low reproductive success. Previously, our laboratory found that 1/3 of acyclic females exhibit hyperprolactinaemia, a likely cause of ovarian dysfunction. This follow-up study re-examined hyperprolactinaemia in African elephants and found the problem has increased significantly to 71% of acyclic females. Circulating serum progestagens and prolactin were analysed in 31 normal cycling, 13 irregular cycling and 31 acyclic elephants for 12 months. In acyclic females, overall mean prolacti…

Severe Elephant Endotheliotropic Herpesvirus 6 Associated Disease in Two African Elephants Under Human Care in Austria.

In 2021, a captive two-year-old African elephant died of cardiovascular failure in Austria. Lesions were indicative of elephant endotheliotropic herpesvirus (EEHV) associated disease, and the presence of EEHV6 could be detected by PCR. About two months later, an eight-year-old female elephant from the same herd showed typical clinical signs of EEHV-related hemorrhagic disease, which coincided with EEHV6 viremia. The animal underwent anti-herpesviral therapy and recovered quickly. Subsequently, blood and trunk wash samples from all elephants of the herd were monitored weekly for the presence of…

Origin of prefabricated frozen elephant trunk.

At first glance, the frozen elephant trunk (FET) appears as a disruptive innovation in aortic surgery. Like any important surgical innovations, however, be it a product or a procedure, the prefabricated, four-branched device has undergone a stepwise, iterative phase of development prior to its first clinical implantation in 2010. In parallel, the surgical procedure of aortic arch replacement itself has had to mature towards a level of quality and risk control to allow for refinement via a new device. These preparatory technical steps included mastering circulatory arrest, including brain and s

Bipolar disorder and addictions: the elephant in the room.

Addictions are highly prevalent in bipolar disorder and greatly affect clinical outcomes. In this editorial, we review the evidence that addictions are a key challenge in bipolar disorder, examine putative neurobiological mechanisms, and reflect on the limited clinical trial evidence base with suggestions for treatment strategies and further developments.

Insightful problem solving in an Asian elephant.

The "aha" moment or the sudden arrival of the solution to a problem is a common human experience. Spontaneous problem solving without evident trial and error behavior in humans and other animals has been referred to as insight. Surprisingly, elephants, thought to be highly intelligent, have failed to exhibit insightful problem solving in previous cognitive studies. We tested whether three Asian elephants (Elephas maximus) would use sticks or other objects to obtain food items placed out-of-reach and overhead. Without prior trial and error behavior, a 7-year-old male Asian elephant showed spont…

The "elephant trunk" technique made easier.

In patients with diffuse aneurysmal disease, the "elephant trunk" technique, which uses surplus intravascular graft length to facilitate subsequent operations on the downstream aorta, is an accepted method of treatment. Nevertheless, in the presence of large aneurysms without a definite neck beyond the left subclavian artery, there is an increased risk of rupture at the level of the distal anastomosis. My colleagues and I herein describe a modified elephant trunk technique performed with a new prosthesis, which was conceived to overcome the difficulties and the risks inherent in a large aneury

The Proteus syndrome: the Elephant Man diagnosed.

Sir Frederick Treves first showed Joseph Merrick, the famous Elephant Man, to the Pathological Society of London in 1884. A diagnosis of neurofibromatosis was suggested in 1909 and was widely accepted. There is no evidence, however, of café au lait spots or histological proof of neurofibromas. It is also clear that Joseph Merrick's manifestations were much more bizarre than those commonly seen in neurofibromatosis. Evidence indicates that Merrick suffered from the Proteus syndrome and had the following features compatible with this diagnosis: macrocephaly; hyperostosis of the skull; hypertroph

Total Arch With Hybrid Frozen Elephant Trunk Versus Branched Stented Anastomosis Frozen Elephant Trunk Repair.

OBJECTIVES: This study aims to evaluate the short-term outcomes of total arch replacement using 2 techniques: the branched stented anastomosis frozen elephant trunk repair (B-SAFER) under moderate hypothermia (25-28 °C), and a simplified total arch and hybrid arch frozen elephant trunk (HA-FET) reconstruction using the Thoraflex stent graft under mild hypothermia (>32 °C). METHODS: Sixty-one patients underwent total arch replacement between June 2020 and March 2024. 25 received HA-FET, and 36 received B-SAFER. Central cannulation and cerebral debranching of the innominate and left common caro

Characterizations of Elephant Endotheliotropic Herpesvirus Type 1A and 4 Co-Infections in Asian Elephant (Elephas maximus) Calves.

Three cases of double infection with elephant endotheliotropic herpesvirus (EEHV) types 1A and 4 in captive Asian elephants are presented. The first calf was a 4-year-old female that showed initial signs of lethargy and depression. The second calf was a 6-year-old female that displayed signs of depression and diarrhea and died within 48 h of the start of supportive treatment. The third was a 2-year-old male that died suddenly while living with the herd. Necropsies were performed in the first and second elephants, while only a tongue sample was collected from the third calf. EEHV infection was …

The Frozen Elephant Trunk Procedure Using New Russian Hybrid Prosthesis "Soft Elephant Trunk": the Early Experience.

Aim      To present the first experience of performing the Frozen Elephant Trunk (FET) surgery in patients with thoracic aorta disease using a new Russian hybrid stent graft "Soft Elephant Trunk".Material and methods  Between 2014 and 2021, 170 patients with thoracic aortic disease underwent complete aortic arch replacement using the FET technique. In 70 of these cases (since June 2019), a hybrid graft "Soft Elephant Trunk" was used. A specific feature of this graft is the conical reduction of the radial force of nitinol crowns and the soft distal end without radial force. The study endpoints

STANDING SEDATION WITH XYLAZINE AND REVERSAL WITH YOHIMBINE IN JUVENILE ASIAN ELEPHANTS (ELEPHAS MAXIMUS).

Evaluation and improvement of immobilization methods are important for wildlife welfare and biodiversity conservation. The sedative and physiological effects of xylazine (50-110 mg per elephant; 0.09-0.15 mg/kg IM) were evaluated in 15 juvenile Asian elephants (Elephas maximus) in Sri Lanka. The time from xylazine injection until first sign of sedation, handling, and reversal with yohimbine (0.009-0.03 mg/kg IV) were recorded. Behavioral signs, level of sedation (no effect, light, moderate, or deep) and response to handling were assessed. Rectal temperature, pulse, and respiratory rates were r…

New filarial nematode from Japanese serows (Naemorhedus crispus: Bovidae) close to parasites from elephants.

A new onchocercid species, Loxodontofilaria caprini n. sp. (Filarioidea: Nematoda), found in subcutaneous tissues of 37 (33%) of 112 serows (Noemorhedus crispus) examined in Japan, is described. The female worm had the characteristics of Loxodontofilaria, e.g., the large body size, well-developed esophagus with a shallow buccal cavity, and the long tail with three caudal lappets. The male worm of the new species, which was first described in the genus, had unequal length of spicules, 10 pairs of pre- and post-caudal papillae, and three terminal caudal lappets. Deirids were present in both sexe

Chronic sole ulcerations associated with degenerative bone disease in two Asian elephants (Elephas maximus).

Chronic foot lesions and degenerative joint disease are common causes of morbidity in elephants. Lesions may become intractable and progressive despite intensive treatment regimens. The forelimbs of two Asian elephants (Elephas maximus) with chronic nonhealing sole ulcerations were examined using manual dissection and computed tomography. Both elephants had abnormal limb conformation that preceded the development of sole ulcerations. In both cases, sole ulcers were associated with remodeling and degeneration of underlying bones of the digits. Conformational abnormalities and altered weight dis…

Respiratory and circulatory parameters of African elephants (Loxodonta africana) anaesthetised with etorphine and azaperone.

Respiratory rate, heart rate, blood-gas tensions (PO2 and PCO2) and pH of arterial (a) and peripheral venous (v) blood, concentration of haemoglobin in arterial blood (Hb), saturation of arterial haemoglobin with oxygen and the end-expiratory concentration of oxygen were measured in 22 juvenile African elephants (Loxodonta africana) anaesthetised with etorphine and azaperone during a period of 35-65 minutes after they had assumed lateral recumbency. Based on these parameters the alveolar-arterial and arterial-peripheral venous differences of PO2 [P(A-a)O2 and P(a-v)O2 respectively] and oxygen …

Elephants dancing in my head: a developmental approach to children's concepts of specific pains.

The present study produced an empirically derived, developmental continuum of children's understanding of specific pains. Subjects of 5 age groups: preschool (ages 3-4), first grade (ages 6-7), third grade (ages 8-10), sixth grade (ages 11-12) and college freshmen (ages 18-23) were interviewed with open-ended questions. The subjects were questioned extensively about 3 specific types of pain: an injury (skinned knee), a medical intervention (injection), and an illness (headache). Subjects were asked to describe each pain, tell why the pain hurt, and state the value of the pain. Their answers we

Comparative genomics and transcriptome analysis reveal unique features of xenobiotic-metabolizing enzymes in elephants.

Elephants, the largest terrestrial mammals, have distinctive metabolic features that may explain their increased sensitivity to xenobiotics, including environmental pollutants and pharmaceuticals. While previous in silico studies have identified unique patterns in elephant cytochrome P450 (CYP), Phase I xenobiotic-metabolizing enzymes, much less is known about their Phase II enzyme systems. This study combines comparative genomic, phylogenetic, and transcriptomic analyses to thoroughly examine Phase I and Phase II xenobiotic-metabolizing enzymes in African (Loxodonta africana) and Asian elepha…

Automated Auricular Surface Temperature Monitoring in Asian Elephants Using Deep Learning and Infrared Thermography.

Asian elephants (Elephas maximus) face substantial thermoregulatory constraints because of their large body size, low relative surface area, sparse hair, and lack of functional sweat glands. Reliable body temperature measurement is essential for assessing thermal status and evaluating welfare in both wild and managed populations, but conventional rectal thermometry requires close physical contact, animal training, and repeated manual handling, making high-frequency, continuous, large-scale monitoring impractical. This study developed a non-invasive framework for automatically detecting the out…

Understanding Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex in elephants through a One Health approach: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex (MTC) that causes the chronic infectious disease- tuberculosis (TB), often presents with a complicated epidemiological pattern where the transmission chain may include humans, domestic animals and wildlife, including elephants. TB has been reported globally in both captive and wild elephants. The One Health approach might be the most effective way of understanding the shared MTC infection dynamics in captive and wild animals like Asian elephants. This systematic review accumulates evidence on occurrence, transmission pathways, and preventive measu…
