When punishment pays.

Explaining cooperation in groups remains a key problem because reciprocity breaks down between more than two. Punishing individuals who contribute little provides a potential answer but changes the dilemma to why pay the costs of punishing which, like cooperation itself, provides a public good. Nevertheless, people are observed to punish others in behavioural economic games, posing a problem for existing theory which highlights the difficulty in explaining the spread and persistence of punishment. Here, I consider the apparent mismatch between theory and evidence and show by means of instructi

Costs and benefits in hunter-gatherer punishment.

Hunter-gatherer punishment involves costs and benefits to individuals and groups, but the costs do not necessarily fit with the assumptions made in models that consider punishment to be altruistic--which brings in the free-rider problem and the problem of second-order free-riders. In this commentary, I present foragers' capital punishment patterns ethnographically, in the interest of establishing whether such punishment is likely to be costly; and I suggest that in many cases abstentions from punishment that might be taken as defections by free-riders are actually caused by social-structural c

The punishment that sustains cooperation is often coordinated and costly.

Experiments are not models of cooperation; instead, they demonstrate the presence of the ethical and other-regarding predispositions that often motivate cooperation and the punishment of free-riders. Experimental behavior predicts subjects' cooperation in the field. Ethnographic studies in small-scale societies without formal coercive institutions demonstrate that disciplining defectors is both essential to cooperation and often costly to the punisher.

Generosity pays in the presence of direct reciprocity: a comprehensive study of 2 × 2 repeated games.

By applying a technique previously developed to study ecosystem assembly [Capitán et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 103, 168101 (2009)] we study the evolutionary stable strategies of iterated 2 × 2 games. We focus on memory-one strategies, whose probability to play a given action depends on the actions of both players in the previous time step. We find the asymptotically stable populations resulting from all possible invasions of any known stable population. The results of this invasion process are interpreted as transitions between different populations that occur with a certain probability. Thus the

Effect of opponent type on moral emotions and responses to video game play.

This study suggests that fighting against different types of opponents in video games (e.g., human opponents vs. monster opponents) may lead to different emotional responses and moral judgments toward game characters. Based on Bandura's moral disengagement theory, this study proposes that shooting at monster opponents makes game players feel less guilty and judge the player-controlled character as more morally justified. An experiment was conducted in which participants played shooting games with either human opponents or monster opponents. The results show that when playing against monster op

[Cerebral computer tomography in subarachnoid hemorrhage].

The evolution of cooperation is a central enigma in evolutionary game theory. Traditionally, the combination of pairwise networks and repeated public goods games (PGGs) with a single state fails to adequately describe realistic group interaction scenarios. On the one hand, pairwise networks lack clear group definitions. On the other hand, a participant's decision affects not only competitors' fitness but also the state of the surrounding environment. To address this problem, we propose a PGG with game transition mechanisms based on uniform random hypergraphs (URH). In our model, game groups fo…

Human-level learning of complex novel tasks as theory-based modelling, exploration and planning.

Humans are remarkable in their ability to quickly learn to perform complex tasks. Reinforcement learning (RL) has long been proposed as a model of human learning, and while leading machine RL models have surpassed human expertise at many classic board games and video games, they require vast experience to learn successfully-none of today's algorithms accounts for humans' ability to learn so many different tasks so quickly. We study human learning on 90 simple yet challenging video games, showing how people learn most games within a few minutes. To explain this behaviour, we propose a strong fo

Psychometric properties of the Persian Gaming Disorder Test and relationships with psychological distress and insomnia in adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Gaming Disorder (GD) was recently included by the World Health Organization (WHO) as a psychiatric condition in the eleventh revision of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11) and is a concern worldwide, including in Iran. Thus, based on the ICD-11 criteria, a Persian version of the Gaming Disorder Test (GDT) was developed to facilitate assessment of GD. METHODS: The present study used classical test theory and Rasch analysis to examine the psychometric properties of the Persian GDT. Iranian adolescents (n = 3837; 2171 [56.6%] males; mean [SD] age = 16.02 [1.4] year

Emergence of contagious cooperation in community-structured networks.

Multilevel sociality, in which large communities emerge from interconnected subgroups, is a hallmark of primate societies and a central focus of the social brain hypothesis. We investigate whether such organizational forms can, on their own, foster cooperation when defection is individually optimal and the population is initially dominated by defectors. Using the spatial Prisoner's Dilemma on community-structured networks, we derive analytical conditions under which cooperation, once present, spreads contagiously across communities without altering payoffs or invoking external enforcement. The

Why does scabies persist despite effective treatment? Coordination failure, Nash equilibrium, and replicator dynamics.

INTRODUCTION: Scabies remains a persistent global public health problem despite the availability of effective treatments, including topical permethrin, benzyl benzoate, crotamiton, and systemic ivermectin. This paper develops a formal economic-epidemiological framework using game theory to explain persistence through coordination failure and Nash equilibrium. METHODS: Household treatment decisions are modeled as a coordination game under imperfect information, treatment costs, and reinfection externalities. The analysis is further extended using an evolutionary replicator dynamics framework t…

Dynamic aspiration based on Win-Stay-Lose-Learn rule in spatial prisoner's dilemma game.

Prisoner's dilemma game is the most commonly used model of spatial evolutionary game which is considered as a paradigm to portray competition among selfish individuals. In recent years, Win-Stay-Lose-Learn, a strategy updating rule base on aspiration, has been proved to be an effective model to promote cooperation in spatial prisoner's dilemma game, which leads aspiration to receive lots of attention. In this paper, according to Expected Value Theory and Achievement Motivation Theory, we propose a dynamic aspiration model based on Win-Stay-Lose-Learn rule in which individual's aspiration is in

Social evolution leads to persistent corruption.

Cooperation can be sustained by institutions that punish free-riders. Such institutions, however, tend to be subverted by corruption if they are not closely watched. Monitoring can uphold the enforcement of binding agreements ensuring cooperation, but this usually comes at a price. The temptation to skip monitoring and take the institution's integrity for granted leads to outbreaks of corruption and the breakdown of cooperation. We model the corresponding mechanism by means of evolutionary game theory, using analytical methods and numerical simulations, and find that it leads to sustained or d…

Nudge for (the Public) Good: How Defaults Can Affect Cooperation.

In this paper we test the effect of non-binding defaults on the level of contribution to a public good. We manipulate the default numbers appearing on the decision screen to nudge subjects toward a free-rider strategy or a perfect conditional cooperator strategy. Our results show that the vast majority of our subjects did not adopt the default numbers, but their stated strategy was affected by the default. Moreover, we find that our manipulation spilled over to a subsequent repeated public goods game where default was not manipulated. Here we found that subjects who previously saw the free rid

Generous cooperators can outperform non-generous cooperators when replacing a population of defectors.

The evolution of cooperation has been a major challenge in evolutionary biology. Unconditional cooperators who help others at a cost to themselves are exploited by defectors who enjoy the benefits without any help in return. It has been argued that cooperation can be established in repeated dyadic interactions if cooperators punish defectors by withholding future cooperation. In social interactions involving more than two individuals, however, withholding future cooperation may result in penalizing not only defectors but also other cooperators. Hence, in such social interactions, it is unclear

Gambling among the Chinese: a comprehensive review.

Despite being a significant issue, there has been a lack of systematic reviews on gambling and problem gambling (PG) among the Chinese. Thus, this paper attempts to fill this theoretical gap. A literature search of social sciences databases (from 1840 to now) yielded 25 articles with a total sample of 12,848 Chinese community participants and 3397 clinical participants. The major findings were: (1) Social gambling is widespread among Chinese communities as it is a preferred form of entertainment. (2) Prevalence estimates for PG have increased over the years and currently ranged from 2.5% to 4.

Inequality aversion and prosocial punishment: Evidence from a one-shot public goods game.

The willingness to engage in costly punishment of free riders (prosocial punishment) is crucial to foster group cooperation and understand public goods provision. While prosocial punishment is common across societies, its motivations remain unclear. Scholars have suggested that people resist inequitable outcomes and willingly bear costs to sanction free riders, seeking a fairer distribution of payoffs. This study tests a key implication of such fairness-driven arguments: if inequality aversion drives prosocial punishment, individuals should punish less when redistribution occurs, as equality c

Baccarat gamblers follow trends rather than adhere to the gambler's fallacy: Analyses of field data from a casino.

This study investigated the cognitive biases underlying baccarat gambling behaviors through an analysis of 17,970,830 games played by 6625 customers in a casino. Baccarat, a popular high-stakes game in East Asia, involves predicting the outcome of two hands, where the results are inherently unpredictable, similar to the structure of games such as roulette. In contrast to existing theories predicting the emergence of the gambler's fallacy-or negative recency-when the outcome generation mechanism is clearly random, most baccarat gamblers exhibit the opposite bias, demonstrating a tendency toward

People with autistic traits are more likely to engage with misinformation and conspiracy theories in a simulated social media context.

BACKGROUND: People with higher levels of autistic traits are shown to be more likely to endorse conspiracy theories and misinformation on traditional methods of measurement (e.g., self-report). However, such research has been limited by the lack of a naturalistic measure of misinformation and conspiracy theory endorsement that resembles social media platforms. METHOD: This study included measures of autistic traits, performance measures of critical reasoning and other notable covariates, to assess how participants performed in a simulated social media environment via the Misinformation Game,

Selecting suitable entities to implement blockchain in green agricultural supply chains.

Blockchain implementation in green agricultural supply chains can be undertaken independently by manufacturers or retailers or jointly by both in industrial practices. However, most existing studies predesignate implementation entities artificially and largely ignore firms' endogenous economic willingness, which restricts the practical explanatory capability. Addressing this research gap, this study systematically explores firms' implementation willingness and the optimal selection of blockchain implementers in green agricultural supply chains, thereby offering targeted decision-making insight

From the Selfish Gene to the "We": Cooperation Often Needs Suppressors.

Human cooperation is often explained through motivations and values, but it is also a strategic and evolutionary problem: locally advantageo … in many settings, additional suppressors then make defection costly or unprofitable. On this view, game theory and a multilevel evolutionary lens are complementary. The Folk Theorem shows how cooperative outcomes can be sustained endogenously under patience and monitoring, while biology shows how the informational and structural conditions for such equilibri …
