The correction and treatment of juvenile hallux valgus (JHV) remains a topic of controversy and confusion, but, at the same time, this distinct pathology serves as a basis for innovation. The variety of clinical and radiographic presentation of pediatric bunion deformities poses a challenge for the treating surgeon, who will need an armamentarium of surgical procedures to address JHV deformities. Historically, high rates of recurrence after JHV corrections as well as surgical failure have been reported.

This is a review of the treatment of hallux valgus based on the paper material submitted to the First and Second Sino-American Conferences on Foot Disorders held in Beijing in 1987 and 1990. The data consisted of 676 cases (979 feet) from 10 major hospitals in China. There were 122 men and 554 women, giving a male to female ratio of 1:45. Osteotomy is a good method for correcting a metatarsus varus and a hallux valgus if the first metatarsophalangeal joint has little or no arthritis, no luxation and is mobile. BACKGROUND: This study compared radiographic and functional patient outcomes of 1st MTP arthrodesis between hallux rigidus (HR) and hallux valgus (HV) cohorts.
METHODS: A retrospective review was conducted at an academic medical center on patients who underwent 1st MTP arthrodesis during 2009-2021. In total, 136 patients (148 feet: HR=57, HV=47, combined=44) met the inclusion criteria of minimum three-month follow-up (mean=1.25 years, range=0.25-6.14 years). Data collection included patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs), radiographic markers, and complication and reoperation rates.
