Arithmetic fluency and number processing skills in identifying students with mathematical learning disabilities.

BACKGROUND: Students with mathematical learning disabilities (MLD) struggle with number processing skills (e.g., enumeration and number comparison) and arithmetic fluency. Traditionally, MLD is identified based on arithmetic fluency. However, number processing skills are suggested to differentiate low achievement (LA) from MLD. AIMS: This study investigated the accuracy of number processing skills in identifying students with MLD and LA, based on arithmetic fluency, and whether the classification ability of number processing skills varied as a function of grade level. METHODS AND PROCEDURES:

Parietal hyper-connectivity, aberrant brain organization, and circuit-based biomarkers in children with mathematical disabilities.

Mathematical disabilities (MD) have a negative life-long impact on professional success, employment, and health outcomes. Yet little is known about the intrinsic functional brain organization that contributes to poor math skills in affected children. It is now increasingly recognized that math cognition requires coordinated interaction within a large-scale fronto-parietal network anchored in the intraparietal sulcus (IPS). Here we characterize intrinsic functional connectivity within this IPS-network in children with MD, relative to a group of typically developing (TD) children who were matche

Fact retrieval deficits in low achieving children and children with mathematical learning disability.

Using 4 years of mathematics achievement scores, groups of typically achieving children (n = 101) and low achieving children with mild (LA-mild fact retrieval; n = 97) and severe (LA-severe fact retrieval; n = 18) fact retrieval deficits and mathematically learning disabled children (MLD; n = 15) were identified. Multilevel models contrasted developing retrieval competence from second to fourth grade with developing competence in executing arithmetic procedures, in fluency of processing quantities represented by Arabic numerals and sets of objects, and in representing quantity on a number line

Brain microstructure is related to math ability in children with fetal alcohol spectrum disorder.

BACKGROUND: Children with fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) often demonstrate a variety of cognitive deficits, but mathematical ability seems to be particularly affected by prenatal alcohol exposure. Parietal brain regions have been implicated in both functional and structural studies of mathematical ability in healthy individuals, but little is known about the brain structure underlying mathematical deficits in children with FASD. The goal of this study was to use diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) to investigate the relationship between mathematical skill and brain white matter structure in

Modeling opioid use disorder in hand surgery patients.

From 1999 to 2022, nearly 300,000 people died from overdoses involving prescription opioids. Commonly used for the management of acute post-surgical pain, prescription opioids remain a leading cause of opioid misuse and abuse. Among surgical populations, patients who undergo hand surgery have especially high rates of prolonged post-operative opioid use and opioid use disorder (OUD). We built a compartmental model describing the progression from opioid exposure to OUD in hand surgery patients and parameterized it using empirical patient data. Using this model, we investigated the functional rel

It's never too early to enjoy math (or not): The emergence of children's emotions toward math in the preschool years.

Acquiring mathematical competence is a complex process that begins in early childhood, long before formal schooling. Even though emotional experiences associated with mathematical activities are theorized to influence motivation, engagement and learning outcomes, research on the emergence of math-related emotions in preschool-aged children remains scarce. The present study investigates whether children aged 4-to-5 years already manifest differentiated emotional responses toward math and how these emotions relate to their self-concept and actual math abilities. A total of 384 Italian preschoole

Beyond the Approximate Number System: Evidence for spatialization of the Object Tracking System at birth.

Human numerical cognition relies on two core systems: the Approximate Number System (ANS), supporting approximate magnitude estimation, and the Object Tracking System (OTS), enabling precise individuation of up to 3 or 4 items. This study tested 32 healthy, full-term newborns (0-3 days old; 18 females) recruited from a maternity ward serving a socioeconomically and ethnically diverse population. Newborns familiarized with 2 elements (OTS range) preferred 1 element on the left, whereas those familiarized with 4 elements (ANS range) preferred 12 elements on the right. This pattern (η²p = 0.462)

Seasonal impacts on brucellosis transmission mediated by live sheep supply-demand dynamics.

To explore how market supply-demand dynamics mediate seasonal brucellosis transmission, a non-autonomous periodic model with market feedback is developed, addressing the oversight of market-driven dynamics in existing models by integrating seasonal fluctuations of core market factors with epidemiological processes. Theoretically, coincidence degree and evolution operator theories confirm the existence and global asymptotic stability of periodic solutions in the market-disease framework, achieving methodological and socio-epidemiological modeling innovations. Validated with Xinjiang's 2018-2022

Characterization of the Long-distance Dispersal Kernel of White-Tailed Deer and Evaluating its Impact on Chronic Wasting Disease Spread in Wisconsin.

Chronic wasting disease (CWD) is a fatal neurodegenerative disease infecting cervids. It is highly contagious and caused by misfolded prions that propagate via templated conformational conversion of the cervid's normal prion protein. Prevalence of CWD in free-ranging deer in North America is mostly low, but in some regions local prevalence has reached 80%. CWD prions can be transmitted via direct contact with infected individuals or indirectly through the environment. Infected individuals shed prions through feces, urine, saliva or carcasses, and prions have long environmental persistence. Lon

Transcoding number words to typed multi-digit numerals: revisiting the strange case in Arabic bilinguals.

Language-specific effects are observed in the performance of numerical tasks. We evaluated the effect of the number word system (non-inverted; decade-unit format HDU vs inverted; unit-decade format HUD) in multi-digit numbers on transcoding performance among Arabic-Hebrew bilingual university students. Both languages are written right-to-left, but only in Arabic the sequence of number words is inverted, with units stipulated before decades (e.g. 'four-and-twenty'). Previously we (Hayek et al., Writing Systems Research 11:188-202, 2019) addressed the effect of the number word system on transcod

Designing reaction-cross-diffusion systems with Turing and wave instabilities.

General conditions are established under which reaction-cross-diffusion systems can undergo spatiotemporal pattern-forming instabilities. Recent work has focused on designing systems theoretically and experimentally to exhibit patterns with specific features, but the case of non-diagonal diffusion matrices has yet to be analysed. Here, a framework is presented for the design of general n-component reaction-cross-diffusion systems that exhibit Turing and wave instabilities of a given wavelength. For a fixed set of reaction kinetics, it is shown how to choose diffusion matrices that produce each

Epidemic Management via Imperfect Testing: A Multi-criterial Perspective.

Diagnostic testing may represent a key component in response to an ongoing epidemic, especially if coupled with containment measures, such as mandatory self-isolation, aimed to prevent infectious individuals from furthering onward transmission while allowing non-infected individuals to go about their lives. However, by its own nature as an imperfect binary classifier, testing can produce false negative or false positive results. Both types of misclassification are problematic: while the former may exacerbate the spread of disease, the latter may result in unnecessary isolation mandates and soc

A Comparison of Mathematical and Statistical Modeling with Longitudinal Data: An Application to Ecological Momentary Assessment of Behavior Change in Individuals with Alcohol Use Disorder.

Ecological momentary assessment (EMA) has been broadly used to collect real-time longitudinal data in behavioral research. Several analytic methods have been applied to EMA data to understand the changes of motivation, behavior, and emotions on a daily or within-day basis. One challenge when utilizing those methods on intensive datasets in the behavioral field is to understand when and why the methods are appropriate to investigate particular research questions. In this manuscript, we compared two widely used methods (generalized estimating equations and generalized linear mixed models) in beh

Traveling Waves and Estimation of Minimal Wave Speed for a Diffusive Influenza Model with Multiple Strains.

Antiviral treatment remains one of the key pharmacological interventions against influenza pandemic. However, widespread use of antiviral drugs brings with it the danger of drug resistance evolution. To assess the risk of the emergence and diffusion of resistance, in this paper, we develop a diffusive influenza model where influenza infection involves both drug-sensitive and drug-resistant strains. We first analyze its corresponding reaction model, whose reproduction numbers and equilibria are derived. The results show that the sensitive strains can be eliminated by treatment. Then, we establi

Mathematical Based Calculation of Drug Penetration Depth in Solid Tumors.

Cancer is a class of diseases characterized by out-of-control cells' growth which affect cells and make them damaged. Many treatment options for cancer exist. Chemotherapy as an important treatment option is the use of drugs to treat cancer. The anticancer drug travels to the tumor and then diffuses in it through capillaries. The diffusion of drugs in the solid tumor is limited by penetration depth which is different in case of different drugs and cancers. The computation of this depth is important as it helps physicians to investigate about treatment of infected tissue. Although many efforts

Why are digits easier to identify than letters?

Beginning with Dejerine's report of pure alexia in 1892, numerous researchers have noted that individuals with acquired impairments of reading may show spared digit identification performance. This digit advantage has also been found in unimpaired adult readers across a number of tasks, and five main hypotheses have been proposed to explain how it arises. In this paper I consider these hypotheses in the context of recent theories of a unified alphanumeric character identification system, and evaluate them according to relevant empirical evidence. Despite some promising findings, none of the hy

Rethinking the roles of language and task for spatial-numerical associations: Commentary on Hochman et al. (2025).

Comments on the original article by Hochman et al. (see record 2025-49981-001) regarding cross-cultural study of the spatial-numerical association of response codes effect. Hochman et al. (2025) investigated how reading direction influences the spatial representation of numbers, known as spatial-numerical associations (SNAs). They compared SNAs between 50 left-to-right reading British and 55 right-to-left reading Iranian adults. The authors manipulated the task (parity and magnitude classification) and stimulus modality (auditory and visual numbers) and found similar SNAs across groups and con

Bistability and complex bifurcation diagrams generated by waning and boosting of immunity.

We investigate an epidemiological model that incorporates waning of immunity at the individual level and boosting of the immune system upon re-exposure to the pathogen. When immunity is fully restored upon boosting, the system can be expressed as an SIRS-type model with discrete and distributed delays. We conduct a numerical bifurcation analysis varying the boosting force and the maximum period of immunity (in the absence of boosting), while keeping other parameters fixed at values representative of a highly infectious disease like pertussis. The stability switches of the endemic equilibrium,

Two-step global sensitivity analysis of a non-local integro-differential model for Cancer-on-Chip experiments.

The present work focuses on a non-local integro-differential model reproducing Cancer-on-chip experiments where tumor cells, treated with chemotherapy drugs, secrete chemical signals stimulating the immune response. The reliability of the model in reproducing the phenomenon of interest is investigated through a global sensitivity analysis, rather than a local one, to have global information about the role of parameters, and by examining potential non-linear effects in greater detail. Focusing on a region in the parameter space, the effect of 13 model parameters on the in silico outcome is inve

Lyme Disease Models of Tick-Mouse Dynamics with Seasonal Variation in Births, Deaths, and Tick Feeding.

Lyme disease is the most common vector-borne disease in the United States impacting the Northeast and Midwest at the highest rates. Recently, it has become established in southeastern and south-central regions of Canada. In these regions, Lyme disease is caused by Borrelia burgdorferi, which is transmitted to humans by an infected Ixodes scapularis tick. Understanding the parasite-host interaction is critical as the white-footed mouse is one of the most competent reservoir for B. burgdorferi. The cycle of infection is driven by tick larvae feeding on infected mice that molt into infected nymph
