Production of pure all-trans retinal from agricultural byproducts by metabolically engineered Corynebacterium glutamicum using two-phase cultivation.

Retinoids, including retinal, retinol (vitamin A), and retinoic acid, comprise vitamin A and its biologically active metabolites, which are widely used in pharmaceutical, healthcare, and cosmetic applications. Among these, retinal has attracted increasing attention in skincare applications because of its favorable combination of high biological efficacy with low skin irritation, and its potent antibacterial activity. However, microbial production of retinal generally yields mixtures with other retinoids and requires expensive nutrient media. Here, we report the production of pure retinal from

Isolation, Identification, and Fermentation Optimization of Phytase-Producing Bacteria and Their Effects on Soybean Seedlings.

Phosphorus in soil mostly exists in complex compounds such as phytic acid, which reduces the effectiveness of phosphorus and limits agricultural production. Phytase has the activity of hydrolyzing phytate into phosphate. The mineralization of phytate in soil by phytase secreted by microorganisms is an effective way to improve the utilization rate of phytate. This study isolated a high-yield phytase strain, identified as Pseudomonas by 16S rDNA and named Pseudomonas sp. S3-10. The fermentation medium composition and conditions were optimized using the single-factor method, Plackett-Burman desig

Evaluation of TCDD biodegradability under different redox conditions.

Polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins have been generated as unwanted by-products in many industrial processes. Although their widespread distribution in different environmental compartments has been recognized, little is known about their fate in the ultimate environment sinks. The highly stable dioxin isomer 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD) has been called the most toxic compound known to man. In this laboratory microcosm study, TCDD bioavailability was evaluated under five reduction/oxidation (redox) conditions including aerobic biodegradation, aerobic cometabolism, methanogenesis, ir

Genetic Diversity analysis of industrial Saccharomyces cerevisiae strains and their correlation with fermentation performance.

Sugarcane molasses serves as a vital non-food feedstock for ethanol fermentation, and its efficient utilisation depends on breeding of excellent microbial strains. Therefore, identification of industrial strains for ethanol fermentation is central to improving fermentation efficiency. To identify high-efficiency ethanol-fermenting strains, we developed a method for preparing high-throughput polymerase chain reaction (PCR) templates within 3 min using seven industrial Saccharomyces cerevisiae strains, integrating single-cell morphology and phenotypic variations in ethanol fermentation. Method s

Induced Phase Separation and Recovery of 2,3-Butanediol from Fermentation Broth.

2,3-Butanediol (2,3-BDO) is a promising platform chemical that can be utilized in a wide range of applications including pharmaceuticals or as a building block for sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). Presently, 2,3-BDO is produced using petroleum feedstocks, however, it can also be produced by bacterial fermentation of sugars. A major drawback to biobased 2,3-BDO production is the costly separation and recovery process. Due to the high boiling point of 2,3-BDO (177 °C), a traditional distillation process would be energy intensive. This work evaluated the separation and recovery of 2,3-BDO from fe

Impact of corn shredlage and crabtree-negative yeast on silage quality and rumen fermentation characteristics.

The physical attributes of corn silage are enhanced by shredlage (SHR), while there is a rising interest in boosting its biological performance. This study aimed to assess and compare the impact of both the chopping method and different yeast strains on ensilage quality including the in vitro evaluation of corn silage. Both types of corn, including chopped and shredded, were harvested on the same day from the same field where the same corn hybrid (Suwan 5) was grown. Subsequently, whole-corn plants were fermented with additives. A 2 × 5 Factorial completely randomized design was employed, wher

Optimized medium via statistical approach enhanced threonine production by Pediococcus pentosaceus TL-3 isolated from Malaysian food.

BACKGROUND: Threonine is an essential amino acid that is extensively used in livestock industry as feed supplement due to its pronounced effect in improving the growth performance of animals. Application of genetically engineered bacteria for amino acid production has its share of controversies after eosinophils myalgia syndrome outbreak in 1980s. This has urged for continuous search for a food grade producer as a safer alternative for industrial amino acid production. Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) appear as an exceptional candidate owing to their non-pathogenic nature and reputation of Generally

Spatial variation in direct and indirect contact rates at the wildlife-livestock interface for informing disease management.

Little is known about disease transmission relevant contact rates at the wildlife-livestock interface and the factors shaping them. Indirect contact via shared resources is thought to be important but remains unquantified in most systems, making it challenging to evaluate the impact of livestock management practices on contact networks. Free-ranging wild pigs (Sus scrofa) in North America are an invasive, socially-structured species with an expanding distribution that pose a threat to livestock health given their potential to transmit numerous livestock diseases, such as pseudorabies, brucello

Effects of sodium salicylate on glucose kinetics and insulin signaling in postpartum dairy cows.

Low-grade inflammation has been implicated as a contributor to metabolic disease during the transition to lactation. In previous work, administration of sodium salicylate (SS) for 7 d led to hypoglycemia in mature dairy cows in early lactation. The purpose of this study was to identify the mode of action underlying this response to SS. Twenty mature (parity 3) cows were assigned alternately at time of calving to either control or SS treatments; the control received a molasses placebo in drinking water, whereas SS received 2.3 g/L of SS with the molasses carrier in drinking water for 7 d after

Bacillus toyonensis amplifies the immunogenicity of an experimental recombinant tetanus vaccine in horses.

Probiotic microorganisms can stimulate an immune response and increase the efficiency of vaccines. For example, Bacillus toyonensis is a nonpathogenic, Gram-positive bacterium that has been used as a probiotic in animal supplementation. It induces immunomodulatory effects and increases the vaccine response in several species. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of B. toyonensis supplementation on the modulation of the immune response in horses vaccinated with recombinant Clostridium tetani toxin. Twenty horses were vaccinated twice, with an interval of 21 days between doses, and equally di

[Peritoneal dialysis in a neonate with maple syrup urine disease. A case report].

Maple syrup disease is an autosomal recessive entity caused by a congenital error in the metabolism of three essential branchedchain amino acids: valine, leucine and isoleucine. The neonatal form of this disease is expressed by a severe and progressive neurological compromise, associated with a peculiar smell of urine, a consequence of the elimination of the excess of these amino acids. This smell of burnt sugar mimics the molasses obtained from maples, which gives its name to this disease. The best method to eliminate these toxins is hemodiafiltration, but in centers where this practice is no
