Witkop tooth and nail syndrome and orthodontics.

This case report presents the orthodontic treatment of a patient with Witkop syndrome, an autosomal dominant genetic disorder characterized by the absence of several teeth and abnormalities of the nails. The patient, a 6-year 4-month-old boy, was referred to our clinic for treatment of severe overjet and openbite. Radiographic and clinical evaluations showed peg-shaped maxillary lateral incisors and the congenital absence of three mandibular incisors as well as spoon-shaped fingernails. Treatment of openbite and overjet was initiated with functional appliances, and fixed orthodontic appliances

Early orthodontic treatment and long-term observation in a patient with Morquio syndrome.

Early orthodontic treatment and long-term observation in a patient with Morquio syndrome were demonstrated. To date, there are no case reports describing orthodontic treatment in such a patient. The patient showed spaced maxillary and mandibular arches with a tongue thrust habit at age seven years eight months. She also showed a protruded upper lip, labial inclination of the upper and lower anterior teeth, and thin enamel. The tongue thrust habit disappeared after the application of a removable orthodontic appliance. The spaced dentition in the upper and lower arches improved after treatment w

The Effectiveness of Functional Clear Aligners for Class II Correction in Growing Patients: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Recent developments in aligner materials have enabled them to be a feasible choice for children and adolescents. Aligners offer a treatment modality for Class II correction in growing patients claiming to address a mandibular deficiency. This study aimed to assess the effectiveness of functional aligners in skeletal Class II treatment through a systematic review and meta-analysis of the existing literature. A comprehensive search was conducted in MEDLINE, Web of Science, EMBASE, Scopus and Cochrane's CENTRAL up to April 2024, with no language or date restrictions. Clinical studies that complie

Nonsurgical class III correction in adolescence using modified fixed reverse twin-block therapy and fixed appliances - a case series.

Skeletal class III malocclusion is a therapeutic challenge in orthodontic practice. Reverse functional appliances such as reverse twin block (RTB) are used to correct class III skeletal and occlusal disharmonies associated with functional anterior shift in growing patients. However, treatment options become limited with increasing age, especially when patients desire nonsurgical and nonextraction camouflage treatment. This report illustrates the successful nonsurgical treatment of class III malocclusion during adolescence and adulthood, exacerbated by a functional anterior shift that resulted

Effect of Twin Block Therapy Versus Fixed Functional Appliances on Pharyngeal Airway Space in Skeletal Class II Patients: A Prospective Cephalometric Study.

BACKGROUND: Class II malocclusion is one of the most common malocclusion with varied prevalence. Functional therapy with appliances like Twin Block or Fixed functional appliances forms the mainstay of treatment in growing Class II patients. These patients might demonstrate narrow airway due to the retrognathic position of the mandible. This study investigated the effects of twin block and fixed functional appliance therapy (Forsus™ FRD) on the pharyngeal airway space in skeletal Class II patients. METHODS: Forty patients with Class II malocclusion were selected and divided into two equal grou

Complications encountered during Forsus Fatigue Resistant Device therapy.

INTRODUCTION: Fixed functional appliances are non-compliant solutions to Class II malocclusion treatment. The clinician, however, should be careful of unexpected complications during the therapy. METHODS: 58 female adolescents who presented with Class II malocclusion due to deficient mandible were treated with Forsus Fatigue Resistant Device (FFRD) therapy until an overcorrection to an edge to edge incisor relationship was achieved. RESULTS: Incisor relationship and overjet were corrected successfully in all the subjects. Twenty-two patients had a complications-free treatment, while several

[A review of the effectiveness and long-term stability of the functional appliance].

The orthopedic treatment of the orthodontics is a typical and crucial technique and method that uses functional appliances to fully work out the potentials of the jaws and muscles, and accordingly to correct the functional or mild skeletal malocclusions in pre-pubertal children and adolescents. A successful orthopedic treatment involves its short-time effectiveness and its long-term stability. For many years, however, the effectiveness of the functional appliance is controversial and the long-term stability of the functional appliance has always been overlooked. Thus, with an aim of presenting

Mandibular response and directional forces with a new functional orthopedic appliance - A clinical case treated with a "Paolone-Kaitsas (PK) appliance".

Class II/1 malocclusion needs strict vertical control in order to obtain a mandibular response and correction of the sagittal discrepancy. These objectives can be achieved not only in one-stage treatments but also in two stages, when clinicians decide to perform functional therapy for psychological, traumatological or social reasons. This paper reports on expression of mandibular response and directional forces in a two-stage class II/1 malocclusion using a new functional appliance. The Paolone-Kaitsas (PK) appliance provides vertical control and occlusal plane management during the very first

Orthodontic and orthopaedic treatment for anterior open bite in children.

BACKGROUND: Anterior open bite occurs when there is a lack of vertical overlap of the upper and lower incisors. The aetiology is multifactorial including: oral habits, unfavourable growth patterns, enlarged lymphatic tissue with mouth breathing. Several treatments have been proposed to correct this malocclusion, but interventions are not supported by strong scientific evidence. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this systematic review was to evaluate orthodontic and orthopaedic treatments to correct anterior open bite in children. SEARCH METHODS: The following databases were searched: the Cochrane Oral
