BACKGROUND: Adenocarcinoid tumors are uncommon neoplasms with dual morphology, showing components of a neuroendocrine tumor with carcinoid features and an adenocarcinomatous component composed of glands lined with mucin-containing cells, some of which are goblet type.

We report a case of sclerosing stromal tumor of the ovary in a 30-year-old pregnant patient presenting with pelvic pain, dysuria, and metrorrhagia. Very few reports of sclerosing stromal tumor of the ovary during pregnancy have been presented. The purpose of our work is to present the findings at physical examination, ultrasonography, magnetic resonance imaging, and histopathology, to review the literature regarding this uncommon neoplasm, and to show the usefulness of magnetic resonance imaging in the assessment of pelvic masses during pregnancy.

BACKGROUND: Primary ovarian leiomyoma is rare. Most cases are asymptomatic; this benign neoplasm is usually found incidentally on routine pelvic examination, at surgery, or at autopsy.
CASE: We present what we believe to be the first case of ovarian leiomyoma associated with ascites and polymyositis, both of which resolved after oophorectomy. This case emphasizes the important fact that preoperative evaluation may be inaccurate.
CONCLUSION: Excision of a pelvic mass with histologic evaluation remains the only reliable way to establish a diagnosis.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to determine the symptoms that are experienced by patients who receive a diagnosis of early ovarian cancer and to compare those symptoms with the symptoms that are experienced by patients with late ovarian cancer, borderline ovarian cancer, and benign ovarian neoplasms.

The circle tube nephrostomy recently has become a popular method for supravesical urinary drainage. A new instrument and technique to facilitate placement of the circle tube have been developed and used successfully in 16 patients requiring nephrostomy drainage for ureteral obstruction secondary to advanced pelvic neoplasms. Gray scale ultrasonography is a useful tool in evaluating pelvic and abdominal soft tissue masses that may be associated with bone neoplasms. Four patients are described: two with giant cell tumors, one with Ewing's sarcoma, and one with a sacrococcygeal teratoma. Ultrasound is especially helpful in assessing the extent of disease, treatment planning, and in following the results of therapy.
