BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Bone devascularization due to impaired periosteal perfusion following fracture with severe soft tissue trauma has been proposed to precede and underlie perturbed bone healing. The extent and temporal relationship of periosteal microcirculatory deteriorations after severe closed soft tissue injury (CSTI) are not known. We hypothesized that periosteal microcirculation is adversely affected and the manifestation of trauma-initiated microvascular impairment in periosteum is substantially prolonged following CSTI.

OBJECTIVES: We aimed to evaluate the outcomes of tracheal window resection and reconstruction using a vascularized periosteal flap (intended for calcification) harvested from the medial clavicle. This is one of several surgical techniques for tracheal resection and reconstruction used for patients with thyroid carcinoma invading the trachea. Importantly, in partial tracheal resection postoperative dynamic airway collapse must be prevented. The present study demonstrated the effects of periosteal autograft on tendon-to-bone healing in the rabbits. In 20 Japanese white rabbits, proximal end of the long digital extensor tendon that was wrapped around by a periosteum was transplanted into a drill hole in the proximal tibial metaphysis. One-year data after autologous grafting of infrabony periodontal defects with human cultured periosteum sheets in combination with platelet-rich plasma and hydroxyapatite granules have shown favorable clinical and radiographic results.
