Decadal electrocardiographic changes between age 40 and 50 in military pilots.

INTRODUCTION: Cardiovascular diseases can lead to sudden in-flight incapacitation and long-term disability in aircraft pilots. Electrocardiogram (ECG) has been widely used to screen for these diseases in routine aeromedical examinations. Several ECG changes such as complete left bundle-branch block (CLBBB) and left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) have been associated with increased likelihood of underlying structural cardiac diseases in addition to the emergence of newly recognized cardiovascular diseases such as Brugada syndrome. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to analyze decadal ECG c

Upper respiratory infections and barotraumas in commercial pilots: a retrospective survey.

INTRODUCTION: One of the most common causes of acute incapacitation among aircrew is barotrauma induced by pressure changes during descent in aviation. However, the incidence of ENT barotrauma during flight among commercial pilots with or without upper respiratory infections (URI) has not been described in detail. METHOD: There were 948 commercial pilots--equivalent to one-third of all commercial pilots in Denmark--visiting the Danish Aero Medical Centre during a 6-mo period who answered a questionnaire regarding signs and symptoms of URI and barotrauma incidence in relation to flying with a

Determination of lumbar muscular activity in helicopter pilots: a new approach.

BACKGROUND: Discomfort in the lumbar region is a frequent complaint of helicopter pilots. Two factors that helicopter crewmembers relate to back pain are exposure to vibration and poor posture during flight, because during flight the seat and controls force the pilot to adopt an asymmetric posture. Repeated exposure to these adverse flight conditions could cause pathological changes in the spine. The purpose of this study was to compare right and left sided lumbar muscular activity in helicopter pilots under real flight conditions, using surface electromyography (SEMG) to demonstrate the effec

+Gz associated stenosis of the cervical spinal canal in fighter pilots.

Previous magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) studies have shown that repeated exposure to +Gz forces can cause premature degenerative changes of the cervical spine (i.e. a work-related disease). This paper reports on two clinical cases of +Gz-associated degenerative cervical spinal stenosis caused by dorsal osteophytes in fighter pilots. Conventional x-rays and MRI were used to demonstrate narrowing of the cervical spinal canal. The first case was complicated by a C6-7 intervertebral disk prolapse and a congenitally narrow spinal canal. The second case involved progressive degenerative spinal ste

The photic sneeze reflex as a risk factor to combat pilots.

The tendency to sneeze upon exposure to bright light is autosomal dominant and affects 18-35% of the population. This uncontrolled sneezing may represent a danger to pilots during flight. Testing was conducted using Ditric narrow band (+/- 10 nm) interference filters. Wavelengths at 430, 532, and 560 nm were tested with a GE 500-W photoflood BCA #1 bulb at constant intensity. Subsequent testing of military and civilian aviation goggles and sunglasses was conducted using a Digikrom 240 monochromator. Repeated testing with interference filters in a clinical setting showed no effect on sneezing i

Is there need for change of health examinations for sea pilots?

Sea pilots must be capable of carrying out their work in all situations. Thus, they must not have any disease or defect, that could impair their job performance. By periodic medical examinations attempts are made to ensure their working capacity. In most countries these examinations are carried out by a general practitioner and they include only few if any objective laboratory tests. The aim of the present investigation was to study the effectiveness of the periodic medical examinations to find out in the population of pilots examined persons with health risks, especially risks for cardiovascu

AI as Core Infrastructure in Radiology: Moving Beyond Pilots to Operational Excellence.

Artificial intelligence (AI) adoption in radiology has accelerated, but operational maturity has not kept pace. Many organisations still deploy AI as isolated point solutions, leading to fragmented workflows, duplicated integration work, inconsistent governance, unclear accountability, and limited ability to assess value over time. For radiologist-facing clinical AI, these problems are less about model performance alone and more about how AI is introduced, integrated, and managed in practice. This commentary argues that radiology should treat AI not as a collection of disconnected products, bu

Development and Testing of a Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation Device for Pilots.

INTRODUCTION: Neck/back pain is a significant problem for long-haul pilots. It accounts for an extensive burden in time and resources to the U.S. and international partners. Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) is an established intervention for treating pain. However, existing solutions and form factors preclude use of such devices while flying. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We developed an innovative patented wrist-worn TENS device with large tactile buttons for operation through the flight suit. We assessed range of motion (ROM) in 26 participants using the device with either a neck

Hormones and Biomarkers in Student Pilots Before and After Rehabilitation from Airsickness.

INTRODUCTION: Airsickness (AS) affects many aviators and has been associated with hormonal and other biomarker variations. An analysis of hormones and biomarkers potentially predicting an individual's adaptation to AS was performed. METHODS: Plasma levels of vasopressin, cortisol, ghrelin, C-reactive protein, substance P, antioxidant capacity, and 15-F2t-isoprostane were analyzed in seven student pilots (five men and two women) affected with incapacitating AS and undergoing a rehabilitation program. Peripheral blood was sampled before and after a nauseogenic Coriolis Stress Test (CST) at the

Functional and vascular neuroimaging in maritime pilots with long-term sleep disruption.

The mechanism underlying the possible causal association between long-term sleep disruption and Alzheimer's disease remains unclear Musiek et al. 2015. A hypothesised pathway through increased brain amyloid load was not confirmed in previous work in our cohort of maritime pilots with long-term work-related sleep disruption Thomas et al. Alzheimer's Res Ther 2020;12:101. Here, using functional MRI, T2-FLAIR, and arterial spin labeling MRI scans, we explored alternative neuroimaging biomarkers related to both sleep disruption and AD: resting-state network co-activation and between-network connec

Chromosome Translocations and Cosmic Radiation Dose in Male U.S. Commercial Airline Pilots.

BACKGROUND: Chromosome translocations are a biomarker of cumulative exposure to ionizing radiation. We examined the relation between the frequency of translocations and cosmic radiation dose in 83 male airline pilots. METHODS: Translocations were scored using fluorescence in situ hybridization chromosome painting. Cumulative radiation doses were estimated from individual flight records. Excess rate and log-linear Poisson regression models were evaluated. RESULTS: Pilots' estimated median cumulative absorbed dose was 15 mGy (range 4.5-38). No association was observed between translocation fre

Toxicological findings in 889 fatally injured obese pilots involved in aviation accidents.

Prevalence of drugs in fatally injured obese pilots involved in aviation accidents has not been evaluated. Therefore, toxicological findings in such pilots (body mass index ≥30 kg/m(2) ) were examined in a data set derived from the Civil Aerospace Medical Institute's (CAMI's) Scientific Information System for 1990-2005. Aeromedical histories of these aviators were retrieved from the CAMI medical certification and toxicology databases, and the cause/factors in the related accidents from the National Transportation Safety Board's database. In 311 of the 889 pilots, carbon monoxide, cyanide, etha
