Parents' Political Ideology Predicts How Their Children Punish.

From an early age, children are willing to pay a personal cost to punish others for violations that do not affect them directly. Various motivations underlie such "costly punishment": People may punish to enforce cooperative norms (amplifying punishment of in-groups) or to express anger at perpetrators (amplifying punishment of out-groups). Thus, group-related values and attitudes (e.g., how much one values fairness or feels out-group hostility) likely shape the development of group-related punishment. The present experiments (N = 269, ages 3-8 from across the United States) tested whether chi

Rise and fall of political complexity in island South-East Asia and the Pacific.

There is disagreement about whether human political evolution has proceeded through a sequence of incremental increases in complexity, or whether larger, non-sequential increases have occurred. The extent to which societies have decreased in complexity is also unclear. These debates have continued largely in the absence of rigorous, quantitative tests. We evaluated six competing models of political evolution in Austronesian-speaking societies using phylogenetic methods. Here we show that in the best-fitting model political complexity rises and falls in a sequence of small steps. This is closel

'Putting profit over people': Australian women's perceptions of the economic and commercial systems shaping women's health and social inequities.

The commercial determinants of health are important drivers of population health, although their influence on women's health and social ineq … s highlight the need for public health responses that address the broader economic, commercial, and political systems shaping women's health and social inequities. Recognizing women as experts in their own lives can strengthen research, policy, and advocacy and support approaches that prioritize health and wellbeing over commercial interests.

Representations of an Ebola 'outbreak' through Story Technologies.

BACKGROUND: Attempts to understand biosocial phenomena using scientific methods are often presented as value-neutral and objective; however, when used to reduce the complexity of open systems such as epidemics, these forms of inquiry necessarily entail normative considerations and are therefore fashioned by political worldviews (ideologies). From the standpoint of poststructural theory, the character of these representations is at most limited and partial. In addition, these modes of representation (as stories) do work (as technologies) in the service of, or in resistance to, power. METHODS:

Seven principles for a critical transdisciplinary approach to planetary health.

The ecological, social, and health crises of the Anthropocene demand approaches to knowledge that confront complexity, uncertainty, and structural injustice. Transdisciplinarity is an approach that can transcend disciplinary silos by integrating academic and non-academic knowledge. Yet, action on public health, planetary health, and health inequities is often implemented in technocratic, depoliticised, and tokenistic ways. Such practices risk marginalising lived experience, reinforcing epistemic hierarchies, and overlooking structural drivers such as capitalism, colonialism, and patriarchy. Dr

Is context considered in health inequity research and why? An examination of current trends in Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Health equity research requires a comprehensive understanding of the historical, social, and political factors that contribute to health disparities. Ethiopia is a nation with a long political and economic history and a diverse culture, encompassing multiple health knowledge systems and traditional healing practices. This background context is essential for research, as the country faces significant health inequities among individuals and across community groups. This study aims to examine the consideration of context in health inequities research, with a focus on Ethiopia. METHOD

[Did the Queen of Pount suffer from cutis laxa?].

A bas-relief of the temple of Deir el-Bahari, Luxor, Egypt, discovered in 1867 by Mariette, shows a queen (Queen of Pount) with wide cutaneous folds on arms, abdomen and legs, hyperlordosis, a steatopygia and abnormally short lower limbs. Various assumptions about the diagnosis (steatopygia, partial achondroplasia, neurofibromatosis) were proposed at the beginning of the XXth century, neither taking into account all morphological abnormalities of the queen. We propose a novel hypothesis taking into account all signs: a Cutis Laxa.

Structural Barriers and the Future of AI in Global Health: Lessons From Eradicable Diseases.

Despite unprecedented scientific and technological capacity, a substantial burden of eradicable and highly reducible diseases of poverty persists in low- and middle-income countries. These conditions continue to cause preventable mortality and morbidity. While artificial intelligence (AI) is widely promoted as a transformative solution to global health challenges, historical evidence demonstrates that technological innovation alone cannot overcome entrenched political, governance, and equity barriers. This narrative review synthesizes evidence from peer-reviewed literature, global health agenc

Politics in psychiatry and psychotherapis in Japan with personal reflection; Is cognitive behavior therapy non-political?

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is often presented as a technically neutral, evidence-based psychotherapy. This article questions that assumption by examining the political, institutional, and cultural contexts that have shaped psychiatry and psychotherapies in Japan, integrating historical review, administrative data, cross-national comparison, and personal reflection. First, the postwar development of Japanese psychiatry is reviewed, focusing on gradual mental health reform following the WHO "Clark Recommendation" and the politicized professional climate of the late 1960s and 1970s. From individual coping to collective resilience: reframing mental health responses to global crises through geopsychiatry.

Global crises are reshaping the conditions under which mental health is produced, threatened, protected, and restored. Pandemics, climate change, armed conflict, forced migration, political instability, economic insecurity, disasters, and digital disruption do not affect mental health only through individual stress reactions or discrete traumatic exposures. They also transform the social, territorial, institutional, ecological, and symbolic environments in which people interpret threat, seek support, access care, maintain hope, and imagine the future. This Conceptual Analysis reframes mental h

Implementing Racial and Social Justice Policies: A Qualitative Study of Three Local U.S. Jurisdictions.

OBJECTIVE: Processes for implementing racial equity and social justice (RESJ) policies are not well understood, despite their growing adoption across local governments. To address this gap, this qualitative study examines how practitioners navigate the day-to-day work of translating RESJ policy mandates into practice and the institutional, political, and organizational conditions shaping implementation across three jurisdictions in a large U.S. metropolitan area. METHODS: We conducted in-depth, semi-structured interviews with 10 practitioners involved in RESJ policy implementation and identif

Institutional factors and HIV/AIDS, TB and Malaria.

This paper outlines the principal institutional factors affecting the slow progress in reaching agreed targets in Africa regarding the prevention and control of HIV/AIDS, TB and Malaria. It focuses on three key factors: political analysis, strategic business approach and international inputs. Most of the analyses tend to look at the technical aspects of disease prevention and control, of political analysis there is a marked absence. Yet, we know that wider contextual or macro factors such as power and political decision making can make or break a programme. Many senior managers in public secto

The contemporary (re-)configuration of global health governance: reevaluating health politics in the COVID-19 pandemic.

The COVID-19 pandemic has raised probing questions about the politics that underly health governance. This article engages with recent sociological and political analyses in this regard and offers a reconsideration of what the pandemic represents for global health governance: a moment of reconfiguration rather than continuity or fundamental change. Drawing on Paul Rabinow's notion of 'the contemporary' as a mode of analysis, we conceptualise global health governance as a 'contemporary configuration' and analyse publicly available data from sources documenting the international response to COVI

Politicizing CBT: Reflections on the boundaries between therapy and society.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is widely regarded as a neutral, evidence-based approach, yet its frameworks embed implicit assumptions about individual responsibility, rationality, and adaptation that carry professional and political implications. This paper examines how mainstream CBT often decontextualizes psychological suffering, emphasizing personal change while neglecting structural, economic, and political determinants of distress. Drawing on recent critiques, emerging research and contextualized interventions, I argue for politically sensitive CBT, integrating awareness of social de

Hierarchical Governance in Public Crisis: A Differential Game Analysis of Epidemic Containment, Economic Stability, and Transition Timing.

In the complex scenario of a major epidemic, apart from the superior government's efforts to promote policy implementation through political incentives and fiscal transfer payments, local governments must strive to balance the inherent tension between public health containment policies and economic stability objectives. In addition, they must carefully select the appropriate transition timing from the emergency response phase to the routine management phase. Considering the hierarchical governance structure and the strategic dynamic decision-making processes involved, this paper examines the e

"The Bitter Laughter". When Parody Is a Moral and Affective Priming in Political Persuasion.

Research on socially aware systems requires fine-grained knowledge of the mechanisms of persuasion in order to promote civic knowledge and aware political participation. Within humor studies, political parody is generally considered a simple pleasant weapon for political evaluation, currently explained by referring to the so called "just a joke effect" (Nabi et al., 2007). Indeed the funny side of parody can induce positive emotions, but it also includes a discrediting act that sometimes produces a "bitter laughter." The present study aims to understand the role played by negative and moral em

Standing against racial capitalism: Reconsidering psychology's role in dismantling systemic racism.

The American Psychological Association's resolutions on dismantling systemic racism represent a watershed moment in our discipline, yet confusion remains as to what it means to "dismantle" racism given psychology's emphasis on changing individual beliefs. This submission will review the tension between "idealist" interpretations of critical race theory emphasizing individual beliefs and "realist" perspectives contextualizing racism within political economic arrangements. Psychology's adoption of an "idealist" framework will be shown to privilege a neoliberal project emphasizing individual chan
