PURPOSE: To determine how frequently patients who present to an emergency department (ED) with a retinal artery occlusion (RAO) undergo brain imaging and cardiovascular testing and are hospitalized.
DESIGN: Retrospective cross-sectional study.
PARTICIPANTS: Patients who presented to an ED with an RAO in the National Emergency Department Sample (NEDS), a nationally representative United States database.
METHODS: The NEDS was queried to identify patients who presented to an ED with the primary diagnosis of RAO between 2006 and 2014. Patient and hospital characteristics were evaluated, and a m…

Objective: To report a case of unintentional retina artery amputation during macular peeling. Methods: Observational case report Results: A 73-year-old female underwent surgery to treat epiretinal membrane (ERM) associated with severe staphyloma in her left eye. While the ERM/posterior hyaloid membrane visually enhanced with triamcinolone (TA) was peeled, a movement of the forceps unintentionally involved the inferior temporal branch artery near the inner edge of the staphyloma. The artery was avulsed and amputated. Oozing from the retinal cleft that had once enfolded the artery and microscopi

PURPOSE: Loss of vision is an extremely rare and unexpected complication following a routine uncomplicated nasal surgery. In majority of patients, visual loss has attributed to retinal emboli which occur with retrograde flow of the intra-arterially injected agents into the nasal cavity or direct trauma to the optic nerve. In this report, the authors present a patient with unilateral decreased vision due to branch retinal artery occlusion soon after a routine nasal surgery.
METHODS: Clinical report.
RESULT: A 32-year-old female patient admitted to the author' clinic with the complaints of dec…

We describe a case of successful Nd:YAG laser embolectomy in a patient with occlusions of the retinal artery affecting the macula and reducing visual acuity. The treatment can only be recommended in cases with a visible embolus and short duration of symptoms.

PURPOSE: To report a case of central retinal artery occlusion associated with hypertriglyceridemia.
METHODS: A 46-year-old man presented with decreased vision and was found to have a central retinal artery occlusion. Laboratory testing demonstrated markedly elevated trig-lycerides with no other abnormalities. Tests for cardiac and carotid embolic sources and hypercoagulability were negative.
RESULTS: Dietary management and medication compliance resulted in dramatically decreased serum triglyceride levels. Vision remained poor during follow-up.
CONCLUSION: Central retinal artery occlusion re…

PURPOSE: To investigate systematically the ophthalmoscopic fundus findings associated with central retinal artery occlusion (CRAO).
METHODS: The study included 240 consecutive patients (248 eyes) with CRAO. The eyes underwent detailed fundus evaluation and stereoscopic color fundus photography at initial and follow-up visits. Patients without evidence of giant cell arteritis were advised to have carotid Doppler imaging and echocardiography to determine the source of emboli. CRAO was classified into 3 types: permanent CRAO (175 eyes), permanent CRAO with cilioretinal artery sparing (35 eyes), …

We describe the development of central retinal artery occlusion (CRAO) in 2 patients after peribulbar (periconal) anesthesia during uneventful phacoemulsification. Although peribulbar anesthesia avoids direct optic-nerve injury, indirect injury presenting as CRAO may occur from vasospasm in response to the injection.

Central retinal artery occlusion can be caused by excessive extrinsic pressure on the eyeball during surgery. It is a rare and severe complication after elective spinal surgery. The authors report a case of central retinal artery occlusion in an adult after posterior lumbar spinal fusion in which a rectangular headrest was used.

We report a case of central retinal artery occlusion associated with migraine. Although this association is rare, the importance of early diagnosis, and the long-term management of this form of complicated migraine are briefly discussed.

A 70-year-old man with arteriosclerosis of the carotid arteries developed acute occlusion of the central retinal artery and blindness during intravenous pyelography. 40 minutes after the occlusive episode he underwent paracentesis of the anterior chamber and vision returned (6/18). During the next 2 weeks, while receiving aspirin and then intravenous heparin, there were recurrent episodes of arterial occlusion and blindness that were immediately treated by repeated paracenteses of the anterior chamber. Visual activity again returned to 6/18 and his condition has remained stable as of his last …
