Association of MGLL Intronic C>T Single Nucleotide Polymorphism (rs782440) with Borderline Personality Disorder: A Case-Control Study.

OBJECTIVE: From the perspective of etiology, borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a multifactorial and complex disorder, hence our understanding about the molecular basis and signaling of this disorder is extremely limited. The purpose of this study was evaluating the relationship between BPD and the Monoacylglycerol lipase (MGLL) polymorphism rs782440 in the population of Hamadan, Iran. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this case-control study, 106 participants including 53 patients with BPD and 53 healthy control subjects were selected by psychiatrists in the Department of Psychiatry at Farshch

Early prediction of failure to progress in single ventricle palliation: A step toward personalizing care for severe congenital heart disease.

BACKGROUND: Advances in surgical technique and medical surveillance have improved outcomes of single ventricle (SV) palliation, particularly during the first interstage period. However, there remains a considerable mortality risk beyond this period. METHODS: Patients born between January 2004 and December 2011 who required SV palliation were retrospectively identified. Patients who survived stage 1 palliation, were discharged home, and then were evaluated for Glenn candidacy, and continued care at our institution were included. Perioperative echocardiographic, hemodynamic, and operative data

C-MORE: A high-content single-cell morphology recognition methodology for liquid biopsies toward personalized cardiovascular medicine.

Cellular morphology has the capacity to serve as a surrogate for cellular state and functionality. However, primary cardiomyocytes, the standard model in cardiovascular research, are highly heterogeneous cells and therefore impose methodological challenges to analysis. Hence, we aimed to devise a robust methodology to deconvolute cardiomyocyte morphology on a single-cell level: C-MORE (cellular morphology recognition) is a workflow from bench to data analysis tailored for heterogeneous primary cells using our R package cmoRe. We demonstrate its utility in proof-of-principle applications such a

Effects of an Intensive Exercise-Based Swallowing Program for Persons With Parkinson's Disease and Complex Medical History: A Single-Case Experiment.

Purpose Dysphagia treatments to address the deterioration of oropharyngeal and respiratory functions in Parkinson's disease (PD) are few and rarely researched in persons with complex medical histories. This research note explored the effects of an intensive exercise-based swallowing program (ISP) that incorporated lingual and respiratory exercises for persons with PD and complex medical history. Method A single-case experiment was conducted across a 4-week ISP of lingual training and expiratory muscle strengthening for 2 participants (67-year-old man and 61-year-old woman). Probes included ton

Long term survival in persons with hemophilia and chronic hepatitis C: 40 year outcomes of a large single center cohort.

We studied the course of chronic HCV infections in a cohort of 222 persons with hemophilia (PWH) and von Willebrand disease followed at our center since 1973. Twenty two (10%) developed end stage liver disease (ESLD). Forty years after HCV infection, cumulative incidence of ESLD was 12.3% and overall survival was 45.5%. Those who were infected with HCV only (n = 100) had a survival of 75.2%, while those infected with HIV (n = 122) had a survival of 24% (P < 0.001). Survivals were significantly longer for those infected with HCV at younger age (< 15 years) compared to those infected over age 30

Knee and hip arthroplasty infection rates in persons with haemophilia: a 27 year single center experience during the HIV epidemic.

Total joint replacement (TJR) is an option for the management of chronic haemophilic arthropathy. Because surgery is technically challenging, there is a high rate of deep prosthetic infections, particularly in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected individuals. We determined the incidence of deep infection rates following total knee and hip arthroplasties in HIV-seropositive and HIV-seronegative persons with haemophilia. Fifty-one primary joint replacements were performed on 32 patients seen at a regional comprehensive haemophilia care center from 1975 to 2002. Thirty prostheses were plac

Mechanisms of Change in Day Treatment Group Schema Therapy for Severe Personality Disorders: A Multiple Baseline Single-Case Study.

Although schema therapy (ST) is an effective intervention for individuals with personality disorders (PDs), its mechanisms of change are not yet well delineated. Understanding these mechanisms is essential for determining the key processes that optimize treatment efficacy. This study investigated mechanisms of change in day treatment group ST (DT-GST) for patients with severe PDs. PD severity was the primary outcome in a multiple-baseline single-case design, assessed before and after DT-GST, alongside idiosyncratic negative core beliefs measured weekly over 30 weeks. Secondary outcomes were ea

Involvement in Health Behavior After Heart Transplantation: The Role of Personal Resources and Health Status. Single-Center Observational Study.

Introduction: Heart transplantation affects all spheres of the patients' functioning - their physical well-being and coping with everyday situations, as well as their identity and social functioning. Its long-term effects depend on the effective cooperation with the transplant team. Post-transplant patients are expected to be committed to adherence to recommendations. Patients' subjective characteristics could increase the risk of difficulties during treatment or might have a protective effect. The major aim of the study was to evaluate the level of engagement in health behavior in heart trans

Psychosocial interventions for reducing vocal challenging behavior in persons with autistic disorder: a multilevel meta-analysis of single-case experiments.

Vocal challenging behavior (VCB) forms a common problem in individuals with autistic disorder. Since VCB is associated with negative outcomes for the individual and his or her environment, it is important to know how to manage this type of CB. To evaluate the effectiveness of several psychosocial interventions applied to decrease VCB in individuals with autistic disorder, we conducted a meta-analysis of single-case experiments (SCEs). Fifty-two SCEs, including 74 participants, were combined using a multilevel meta-analysis. The overall treatment effect was large and statistically significant.

Walker devices and microswitch technology to enhance assisted indoor ambulation by persons with multiple disabilities: three single-case studies.

These three single-case studies assessed the use of walker devices and microswitch technology for promoting ambulation behavior among persons with multiple disabilities. The walker devices were equipped with support and weight lifting features. The microswitch technology ensured that brief stimulation followed the participants' ambulation responses. The participants were two children (i.e., Study I and Study II) and one man (i.e., Study III) with poor ambulation performance. The ambulation efforts of the child in Study I involved regular steps, while those of the child in Study II involved pus

Person-centered occupational therapy intervention for the prevention of delirium and improvement in occupational performance in elderly patients admitted to an intensive care unit: A randomized controlled single-blinded trial protocol.

Among the deleterious effects caused by hospitalization of elderly patients in intensive care unit (ICU), delirium and impaired performance in occupations are frequent and have long-term negative outcomes. Delirium protocols described in the literature vary in frequency, intensity, and content regarding pertinent interventions. Occupational Therapy (OT) practices are heterogeneous and generally consist of non-personalized interventions. For this reason, the primary outcome of this research is to evaluate the effect of a person-centered OT protocol on the prevention of delirium and the occupati

Personalized health risk assessment based on single-cell RNA sequencing analysis of a male with 45, X/48, XYYY karyotype.

Numeric sex chromosome abnormalities are commonly associated with an increased cancer risk. Here, we report a 14-year-old boy with a rare mosaic 45, X/48, XYYY karyotype presenting with subtle dysmorphic features and relative height deficiency, requiring growth hormone therapy. As only 12 postnatal cases have been described so far with very limited follow-up data, to assess the proband's long-term prognosis, including cancer risk, we performed high-throughput single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) analysis. Although comprehensive cytogenetic analysis showed seemingly near perfect balance betwe

Comparison of Single-Session Dose Response Effects of Whole Body Vibration on Spasticity and Walking Speed in Persons with Spinal Cord Injury.

UNLABELLED: Spasticity affects approximately 65% of persons with spinal cord injury (SCI) and negatively impacts function and quality of life. Whole body vibration (WBV) appears to reduce spasticity and improve walking function; however, the optimal dose (frequency/duration) is not known. We compared single-session effects of four different WBV frequency/duration dose conditions on spasticity and walking speed, in preparation for a planned multi-session study. Thirty-five participants with motor-incomplete SCI received four different doses of WBV: high frequency (50 Hz)/short duration (180 s),

Lumbar flexion and dynamic EMG among persons with single level disk herniation pre- and postsurgery with radicular low-back pain.

OBJECTIVE: The paraspinal muscles often fail to relax on forward flexion in many persons with low-back pain. The goal of this prospective study was to determine whether this abnormal lack of a flexion-relaxation phenomenon corrects after lumbar diskectomy for symptoms of radiculopathy with low-back pain. DESIGN: Electromyographic testing was performed on 17 patients before and 30 days after lumbar diskectomy. RESULTS: Although pain improved significantly (P < 0.05), the flexion-relaxation phenomenon did not improve. CONCLUSIONS: Failure to recover muscle relaxation while pain is relieved su
