Development of a smartphone app for neuromuscular facial training.

BACKGROUND: Several studies have demonstrated a significant benefit of neuromuscular facial training in the rehabilitation of patients with facial palsy. However, printed instructions for home training are often not of optimum quality and associated with low adherence to therapy. Professional guidance, e.g., by occupational therapists, is regarded as being of high quality, but is associated with a high cost burden, particularly in chronic forms of disease. OBJECTIVE: The idea to develop a smartphone app for facial training arose from the above-described situation. The aim was to provide struc…

[On biomechanics of the cervical spine when using a smartphone].

This paper deals with biomechanics of the cervical spine when using a smartphone. The forces acting on the vertebral bodies, vertebral joints, intervertebral discs, muscles and ligaments increase as the angle of flexion of the cervical spine increases. The disorders caused by smartphone neck, on the other hand, are mostly acute and can be treated well with regular exercise and strengthening the neck muscles. Therapy is therefore also suitable for prevention. However, the long-term effects should not be disregarded, because the increasing possibilities for using smartphones also mean that the a…

Detecting middle ear fluid using smartphones.

The presence of middle ear fluid is a key diagnostic marker for two of the most common pediatric ear diseases: acute otitis media and otitis media with effusion. We present an accessible solution that uses speakers and microphones within existing smartphones to detect middle ear fluid by assessing eardrum mobility. We conducted a clinical study on 98 patient ears at a pediatric surgical center. Using leave-one-out cross-validation to estimate performance on unseen data, we obtained an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.898 for the smartphone-based machine learning algorithm. In comparison, commer…

Gold nanostructures for the sensing of pH using a smartphone.

Recently, metal nanostructures have been found to be capable of recognizing small changes in their surrounding environment, which can be utilized as significant sensing tools. In this study, we demonstrated colorimetric sensing of pH by gold nanostructures (GNs) using a simple smartphone. An indigenously developed Android app based on the CIELab 1931 analysis, which could run in a smartphone, was used for the precise determination of the pH value of liquid media. The pH value of an unknown solution obtained from the developed Android app was also compared with that obtained from the convention…

Social media and smartphone technology in the symptomatology of OCD.

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a disabling and heterogeneous psychiatric disorder. In line with the trend towards globalisation and modern technology, the thematic content of obsessions and compulsions is bound to evolve over time. However, assessment scales such as the Yale-Brown Obsessive-Compulsive Scale symptom checklist are not adapted accordingly. By means of two case reports, we would like to introduce social media and smartphone technology in the content of obsessions and compulsions. Our aim is to raise awareness among clinicians of these topics in key symptomatology of OCD an…

Automated tongue diagnosis on the smartphone and its applications.

Tongue features are important objective basis for clinical diagnosis and treatment in both western medicine and Chinese medicine. The need for continuous monitoring of health conditions inspires us to develop an automatic tongue diagnosis system based on built-in sensors of smartphones. However, tongue images taken by smartphone are quite different in color due to various lighting conditions, and it consequently affects the diagnosis especially when we use the appearance of tongue fur to infer health conditions. In this paper, we captured paired tongue images with and without flash, and the co…

A comparison of the reliability of smartphone apps for opioid conversion.

BACKGROUND: Many medical professionals use smartphone applications (apps) on a daily basis to support clinical decision making. Opioid switching (conversion of one opioid to another at equianalgesic dose) is common in clinical practice and often challenging for doctors. Apps providing an opioid conversion tool can therefore be a useful resource. Despite rapid growth in the use of medical apps, the lack of robust regulation and peer review to ensure the accuracy and reliability of app content is currently an area of concern. METHOD: We searched major online app stores for apps providing an opi…
