Current practice and policy realities revisited: undertrained nursing home social workers in the U.S.

Despite a nearly 20-year-old legislation to strengthen social work (SW) coverage within nursing homes and decades of literature exploring the need for SW training, untrained and undertrained social workers dominate American nursing homes. Many persons who call themselves social workers are not educated as such, but nevertheless, must work in complex, conflict-ridden nursing homes without assessment and advocacy skills essential to address the symptoms and to fully respond to subjugated residents' needs. The call for more qualified social workers to be employed in nursing homes is a recognition

Sex Work and Motherhood: Social and Structural Barriers to Health and Social Services for Pregnant and Parenting Street and Off-Street Sex Workers.

Our study documents the correlates of barriers to pregnancy and mothering among sex workers in Vancouver, Canada. We used baseline data from An Evaluation of Sex Workers' Health Access (AESHA), a prospective cohort of sex workers. Among the 399 sex workers who had ever been pregnant or had a child, 35% reported having ever experienced a barrier, with lower education, homelessness, and history of injecting drugs significantly correlated with pregnancy and mothering barriers. Our findings highlight a critical need for tailored and nonjudgmental services and supports, including improved programs

Work-related grief and bereavement experiences of social and community service workers working with people experiencing social disadvantage: a rapid scoping review.

BACKGROUND: While an extensive body of research in palliative care exists on the experiences of grief and bereavement among family caregivers, much of this research is based on normative assumptions of who family caregivers are - housed, financially stable, and with extended family and/or friends to draw on for support. Research shows that in contexts of social disadvantage(e.g., homelessness and poverty, mental health and substance use concerns, racism and discrimination), social and community workers can become 'defacto' family and provide caregiving support at the end of life. Yet, there is

Negative affect and psychotic-like experiences in social workers: mechanisms and the buffering role of mindfulness.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Occupational mental health is critical in the high-emotional-labor field of social work. Grounded in the Conservation of Resources (COR) theory, this study investigates the underlying mechanisms linking occupational stress to subclinical psychopathology. Specifically, we propose and test an integrative moderated serial mediation model to explore how Psychotic-like Experiences (PLEs) are statistically associated with Negative Emotion through dual cognitive-affective pathways, and how Mindfulness serves as a vital buffering boundary condition in such associations. METHOD

Contamination of a drug consumption room with drugs and potential risks for social health care workers.

BACKGROUND: Studies have shown that contamination of surfaces by illicit drugs frequently occurs in forensic laboratories when manipulating seized samples as well as in pharmacies and hospitals when preparing medicinal drugs. In this project, we extended these studies to a Drug Consumption Room to investigate drug levels and possible exposure of the staff members. METHODS: We investigated pre and post cleaning contamination by heroin and cocaine and their degradation products 6-monoacetylmorphine and benzoylecgonine on different surfaces (tables, counters, computers and door handles) and in t

Home visiting support for people with hikikomori (social withdrawal) provided by experienced and effective workers.

OBJECTIVES: Hikikomori - an almost complete withdrawal from social interaction first seen in Japan - is becoming an emerging psychological syndrome worldwide. The mental health community in Japan has focused on hikikomori since the 1990s. Hikikomori was initially considered a culture-bound trait, unique to Japan; however, it has become an international concern, and cases have been reported even outside of Japan. While home visiting support for people with hikikomori has gained popularity, an effective solution remains elusive. This paper describes the process involved in effective home visitin

Interplay of Lifestyle Social Determinants and Isolation in the Risk of Metabolic Syndrome Among Spanish Workers.

BACKGROUND: Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a cluster of cardiometabolic abnormalities linked to cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes mellitus. While lifestyle and sociodemographic determinants are well established, the role of social isolation in MetS is less explored. METHODS: A nationwide cross-sectional study included 117,298 Spanish workers from multiple occupational sectors (2021-2024). MetS was defined using National Cholesterol Education Program (NCEP) Adult Treatment Panel (ATP) III, International Diabetes Federation (IDF), and Joint Interim Statement (JIS) criteria. Leveraging COVID-19 Experiences to Prepare for the Future: A Pilot Study with Hospital Social Workers.

Social workers in hospital settings transformed their practice to meet the needs of patients, caregivers, and interdisciplinary team members during the COVID-19 pandemic. This included developing telehealth expertise to address patient and family needs, particularly at the end of life. In this pilot study, 10 hospital social workers from one New England tertiary adult medical center participated in a focus group (n = 7) or structured interview (n = 3). Guided by the four constructs of the social ecological model, four major themes emerged from the data highlighting hospital social workers' rol

Risk perception of falls on the same level at workplaces among social welfare workers in Japan.

Falls on the same level (FSLs) are a major cause of occupational injuries in the social welfare industry, especially in aging societies. Here, we conducted a questionnaire survey to investigate how social welfare workers perceive the risk of occupational accidents, with a focus on FSLs, and to examine the effects of age on risk perception. Respondents (n=294) rated their estimated likelihood of experiencing five major types of occupational accidents across six levels of injury severity. The results indicated that the FSL risk was not consistently underestimated relative to other accident types

Quality Improvement Effort With Proactive Social Worker Communication to Enhance Palliative Care Access.

PURPOSE: This study evaluates a quality improvement project to improve access to specialty palliative care (PC) for individuals with advanced cancer. METHODS: A California health care organization implemented a social worker (SW)-led program to improve education about, and referrals to, PC for patients with advanced cancer at one clinic (intervention site), whereas three control sites continued usual care. We used a rigorous intention-to-treat difference-in-difference analysis to detect whether the intervention increased PC referrals (primary outcome) at the intervention versus control sites

Through the lens of social workers: Issues raised in the family talk intervention in pediatric oncology.

Families affected by cancer need psychosocial support, however few family interventions have been scientifically evaluated. The Family Talk Intervention (FTI) was pilot tested in pediatric oncology with 26 families. Issues raised and addressed during FTI meetings were explored by analyzing hospital social workers' (HSWs) fieldnotes. The findings show a range of severity in the family issues raised. These encompassed families' wellbeing, communication, conflicts, strengths, and needs for further support. Findings indicate that FTI can be a structured, yet flexible, way for HSWs to identify and

The experiences of hospital social workers who care for homeless patients: an interpretive phenomenological analysis.

Unique challenges exist for hospital social workers tasked with the care of patients experiencing homelessness. These challenges affect patient care, impact social work practice, and emphasize the need to better understand the experience of providing services to this vulnerable population. Research is limited and focuses upon the experiences of unhoused patients and of medical management, not upon the experiences of the social workers positioned to meaningfully impact care. To address this gap, the current study utilized Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) to examine the lived experie

Community Health Worker Intervention to Address Social Determinants of Health for Children Hospitalized With Asthma.

BACKGROUND: Social determinants of health (SDOH) contribute to racial disparities in asthma outcomes. Community health worker (CHW) programs represent a promising way to screen for SDOH and connect patients to resources, but the impact of CHW programs in the inpatient pediatric setting has been examined in few studies. In this study, we aimed to evaluate a CHW program for children hospitalized with asthma in a predominantly Hispanic community by examining rates of SDOH and social resource navigation. METHODS: This pilot study involved a CHW intervention to improve pediatric asthma care. Patie
