Mental health malleability beliefs and help-seeking intentions among Chinese college students: the mediating role of help-seeking self-stigma and the moderating role of depression.

INTRODUCTION: College years represent a critical period for mental health; however, despite the high prevalence of depression among them, Chinese college students show low utilization of on-campus mental health services. This study examined the associations between beliefs about the malleability of mental health, help-seeking self-stigma, depression level, and intentions to seek mental health services on campus among Chinese college students. METHOD: A sample of 2,258 Chinese undergraduates (589 males and 1,669 females, aged between 18 and 25 years old; M age = 19.59, SD = 1.23) completed que

On-site IUD implementation in a student-run free clinic.

Uninsured populations face disproportionately high rates of unplanned pregnancy due to financial and structural barriers to effective contraception. While long-acting reversible contraception (LARC), such as intrauterine devices (IUDs), offers high efficacy for pregnancy prevention, implementation of IUDs within independent student-run free clinics (SRFCs) can be limited by a lack of hospital affiliation or government funding. This community case study details a sustainable model for integrating IUD services into an independent SRFC in Northern Illinois. By partnering with the humanitarian org

The impact of service-learning on two groups of South African dental students.

Service-learning has become an important component in the education of medical and dental students around the world. Dental students at the University of Witwatersrand, South Africa, provide dental services to rural communities via the Phelophepa train or a Public Oral Health Facility (POHF). The Phelophepa train is a mobile primary health care facility offering dental, pharmacy, nursing, and medical services provided by health professions students. The objective of this study was to determine the impact this experience with service-learning has had on dental students. Final-year dental studen

Mental health care in a high school based health service.

This paper describes the mental health services provided at a high school based health center that integrates mental health and medical services. Five years after the inception of the center in 1988, mental health visits had quadrupled. In 1992 alone, students made 1,002 mental health visits. Strikingly, one-third of these students reported problematic substance use among other family members. Other leading reasons for utilizing mental health services included pregnancy (19%), past or present suicidal ideation (14%), obesity (8.7%), ongoing depression (8%), and issues related to sexuality (7.5

Receipt of school health education and school health service among adolescent immigrants in Massachusetts.

This study assessed whether immigrant adolescents receive health education and services in schools at levels comparable to native-born peers. Surveys from 2,635 8th and 10th graders allowed comparisons between students living in the United States "always" (n = 2,080), "more than six years" (n = 299), and "six years or less" (n = 191). Immigrant students were equally likely to receive health education, more likely to use peer counseling or support groups (p < .001), and less likely to use health services (p < .05). They communicated more often with staff (p < .05), were more concerned about men

Demand for health services or professionals among Brazilian adolescents according to the National School Health Survey 2015.

INTRODUCTION: Knowing the profile of individuals who demand health services or professionals could help in the improvement and reorganization of services. However, this subject is still underexplored among adolescents. This study aimed to describe and identify characteristics related to the demand for health services or professionals by Brazilian students. METHODS: Using data from the 2015 National School Health Survey, the prevalence and respective 95% confidence intervals (95%CI) of the demand for health services or professionals among students were estimated, and Poisson regression adjuste

A cross-sectional survey was performed in students with self-assessed high risk of HIV infection by an online HIV infection risk assessment tool from March to April 2019. Multiple logistic regressions were applied with hierarchical model. Results:

College student suicide in the United States: 1990-1991 through 2003-2004.

Suggestions that there is a growing epidemic of suicide among college students in the United States are false. The National Survey of Counseling Center Directors reports 1,404 student suicides over a 14-year period and an adjusted suicide rate of 6.5, half the rate of the general US population (12.6 for all races) during this period when matched for gender and age. Counseling centers appear effective in treating suicidal students, for although the suicide rate for students who were currently or previously clients at campus counseling centers is 3 times the rate of other students, student clien

Use of Online Tools for Mental Health Among Racially and Ethnically Diverse College Students: Mixed Methods Study.

BACKGROUND: Anxiety and depression symptoms have been rising among college students, with many increasingly meeting the criteria for 1 or more mental health problems. Due to a rise in internet access and lockdown restrictions associated with the COVID-19 pandemic, online mediums, such as teletherapy, repositories for mental health information, discussion forums, self-help programs, and online screening tools, have become more popular and used by college students to support their mental health. However, there is limited information about individual-level factors that lead college students to us

Exploring the inter-professional experiences of student nurses and midwives to facilitate better outcomes for mothers with a learning disability in maternity services: a qualitative case study.

AIM: The aim of this study is to explore the experiences of student learning disability nurses and student midwives in supporting mothers with an intellectual disability. BACKGROUND: The Ockenden Report (2022), an independent review into maternity care in the United Kingdom, highlighted workforce challenges and inequalities in maternity services. Increasing capacity by moving away from one-to-one clinical supervision: using peer-assisted learning and a group model of student placements in community paediatric speech and language therapy to enable student-led service delivery.

BACKGROUND: Health Education England (HEE) and the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists (RCSLT) have identified the need to increase placement capacity. Speech and language therapy is a shortage profession in the UK, so services need to consider innovative placement models to increase their placement offers without increasing the time burden on speech and language therapists (SLTs). AIMS: To increase capacity for pre-registration practice-based learning by using peer-assisted learning (PAL) in a group model of student placement to enable student-led service delivery which provides

[Burnout symptoms in Austrian student nurses in their third year of training].

Burnout is considered a major negative outcome of work related distress in social and health care services, especially in nursing. In the present study 179 student nurses in their third year of training and 47 registered nurses, all working in the Austrian province of Salzburg, were examined with the Maslach Burnout Inventory and the Satisfaction With Life Scale. Compared on a regional and national level, burnout scores of student nurses were equal to those of registered nurses and workers in social and nursing professions. The specific stressors of education and training lead to strain compar

Perceived barriers to care and access to university mental health support services among first-year undergraduates: findings from the U-Flourish study.

OBJECTIVE: Many students who need mental health support do not receive it. We examined associations between perceived barriers and university mental health service access. Participants: First-year Oxford University undergraduates (n = 443) with unmet mental health needs. METHODS: Logistic regression tested which perceived practical, attitudinal, and stigma-related barriers predicted service use. Subgroup analyses targeted screen-positives for anxiety (GAD-7) and/or depression (PHQ-9). RESULTS: Reduced service use was linked to attitudinal barriers, minimizing problems (OR = 0.64; CI = 0.42-0

Evaluation of patient health outcomes of a student-run free clinic in East Harlem.

BACKGROUND: Most United States medical schools have affiliated student-run free clinics, but the quality of services provided in such contexts compared to national metrics is unknown. This study determines whether a student-run, attending-supervised free clinic servicing a low-income and minority race patient population in New York City can meet national metrics of care. METHODS: Through chart review from January 1, 2020 to December 31, 2020, patient outcomes and service utilization in the Healthcare Effectiveness Data and Information Set were examined and compared to national rates of patien
