Dandy-Walker malformation (DWM) is the most common human cerebellar malformation, characterized by hypoplasia of the cerebellar vermis, cystic dilation of the fourth ventricle, and an enlarged posterior fossa with upward displacement of the lateral sinuses, tentorium, and torcular. Although its pathogenesis is not completely understood, there are several genetic loci related to DWM as well as syndromic malformations and congenital infections. Dandy-Walker malformation is associated with other central nervous system abnormalities, including dysgenesis of corpus callosum, ectopic brain tissue, h

The Klippel-Feil deformity is a complex of osseous and visceral anomalies, which include low hairline, platybasia, fused cervical vertebrae with a short neck, and deafness. Associated central nervous system abnormalities include occipital cephalocele, Chiari I malformation, syrinx, microcephaly, and hydrocephalus. Herein, we report a case with Klippel-Feil syndrome and Dandy-Walker malformation.

Dandy-Walker malformation is a congenital brain abnormality involving the fourth ventricle and cerebellum. We report on a case of twins discordant for this disorder diagnosed in the second trimester of gestation. The twin pregnancy was revealed to be monozygotic using DNA investigation. To our knowledge, this is the first time monozygotic twins discordant for Dandy-Walker malformation have been described.

BACKGROUND: Trigeminal neuralgia may be idiopathic or secondary to a number of cranial pathologies. We report a novel case of trigeminal neuralgia associated with Dandy-Walker malformation, which may be an etiologic factor.
CASE DESCRIPTION: A 32-year-old male presented with shock-like pain in the somatosensory distribution of the right trigeminal nerve, which was refractory to all medication. MRI revealed a cystic lesion in the posterior fossa and a hypoplastic vermis. The pain was diagnosed as trigeminal neuralgia and was thought to be secondary to the Dandy-Walker malformation. The trigemi

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this series is to describe the prenatal diagnosis and pregnancy outcome of fetuses affected with Dandy-Walker malformation in which a posterior cyst herniated through a bony defect of the occipital skull, foramen magnum, or both.
METHODS: Two- and 3-dimensional sonography were used to examine 2 fetuses with poorly delineated cerebellar structures and a large posterior cystic neck mass. Fetal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was added to this evaluation as a complementary diagnostic modality.
RESULTS: Three-dimensional sonography helped characterize the precise site

We report a family in which two sisters had three male fetuses with isolated Dandy-Walker variant (DWV) diagnosed on antenatal ultrasound. DWV is one part of a spectrum of abnormalities related to Dandy-Walker malformation (DWM) which commonly occur in association with other anomalies with or without chromosome abnormalities. The majority of cases are sporadic but rare reports of recurrence in siblings exist. This is the second report suggesting that isolated DWM/DWV can be inherited as an X-linked recessive trait.

Prenatal ultrasound identified Dandy-Walker malformation (DWM) in ten singleton pregnancies with concurrent central nervous system (CNS) anomalies and extra-CNS anomalies in eight cases. DWM was confirmed by postnatal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) or pathological examination in nine cases. Karyotypes were normal in the seven infants tested. Postnatal neurological and developmental testing in the five survivors showed a spectrum of clinical outcome from minor defects to severe handicap. Postnatal investigation also disclosed additional CNS and extra-CNS findings not detected on ultrasound, a

We report a fetus affected by Meckel-Gruber syndrome whose phenotype was characterized by macrocephaly, frontal bossing, a saddle nose, marked micrognathia, a distended abdomen, omphalocele, post-axial polydactyly and talipes equinovarus. The main neuropathological finding at autopsy was in a very large cyst located in an abnormally wide posterior cranial fossa consistent with a Dandy-Walker anomaly. Intestinal malrotation, enlarged cystic dysplastic kidneys and hepatic portal fibrosis coexisted. The occurrence of a Dandy-Walker malformation in Meckel-Gruber syndrome confirms a disturbance in

We report a case of KID syndrome in a young girl born to non-consanguinous parents without any similar family history. The typical features of this dysplasia, erythrokeratodermia with dry rugous teguments, pachydermia folds of the knees, facial erythema, peribuccal grooves, leucokeratosic perleche, hypotrichosis of the eye lashes and eyebrows, early onset deafness and ophtalmological lesions were observed. The characteristic pachydermatoglyphia of the hands was present. A malformation of the posterior cerebral fossa--a dandy walker syndrome--was revealed at computed tomography.

Walker-Warburg syndrome is a congenital malformation syndrome of unknown etiology which is characterized by fatal neurological lesions. It was first described by Walker in 1942 as involving agyria, hydrocephalus and eye malformations. Its etiology has been discussed in all of the articles on the subject in the literature, but the majority of the authors describe it as an autosomal recessive syndrome. Ultrasonography plays a key role in detecting a cephalic anomaly by prenatal diagnosis as in our 2 cases. The aim of this article is to report 3 new cases of Walker-Warburg syndrome in two familie

An infant had a giant congenital nevus, neurocutaneous melanosis (NCM), and a Dandy-Walker malformation of the brain. The diagnosis of NCM was suspected at 6 weeks of age when macrocephaly was noted, resulting in the discovery of hydrocephalus and a Dandy-Walker malformation. Serial magnetic resonance imaging scans demonstrated so-called T1 shortening in the pia or subarachnoid spaces surrounding the cerebellar vermis and in the temporal lobes anterior to the temporal horns. Eventually, a biopsy-proved melanoma developed in the anterior temporal lobe, in an area previously noted to have T1 sho

Occipital cephaloceles in the Dandy-Walker syndrome are not rare. To date, 28 cases have been reported. We report on 8 cases of associated occipital meningocele, totalling 16% of all patients with the Dandy-Walker syndrome in our series. In all patients, communication existed between the posterior fossa cyst and the occipital meningocele. In 2 patients, the occipital meningocele disappeared after cerebrospinal fluid shunting and never required surgical repair. It appears that the cranial defect had ossified and resulted in self-closure. Poor intellectual development in persons with the Dandy-W

Recently, we examined a small-for-gestational age infant with blepharophimosis, congenital contractures of elbows, hips, and knees, fixed facial expression, and hypotonia. These congenital anomalies are consistent with a diagnosis of the Marden-Walker syndrome. The infant also had an omphalomesenteric duct, left hypoplastic kidney, hypoplastic right lower lobe of the lung, and displacement of the larynx to the right; these anomalies have not been described previously in this syndrome. A summary of the clinical manifestations of the previously reported patients is presented.

Dandy-Walker cyst associated with occipital meningocele is very rare. Only 12 patients have been reported. We report a female infant with Dandy-Walker cyst and occipital meningocele whose diagnosis was suspected antenatally by in utero ultrasonography. At birth, head circumference was normal for 37 weeks gestation. She underwent surgical repair of the occipital meningocele immediately after birth. The post-operative course was uneventful until the sixth day of life when progressive enlargement of the head with progressive ventricular dilatation was recognized. Communication between the posteri

The use of infant walkers within a large prepaid pediatric group practice was investigated. Of 195 patients (age range, 5 to 15 months) surveyed during a three-months) surveyed during a three-month period, 150 patients (77%) used infant walkers. Of those, 47 patients (31%) had suffered mishaps. These included closed head trauma, fractures, lacerations, tooth evulsion, and soft palate perforation. There is no proved benefit associated with the use of such walkers. The risk of injury associated with the use of infant walkers should be of concern for those physicians who care for preambulatory ch…
