Diversity and characterization of culturable bacterial endophytes from Zea mays and their potential as plant growth-promoting agents in metal-degraded soils.

In this study, we evaluated the phylogenetic diversity of culturable bacterial endophytes of Zea mays plants growing in an agricultural soil contaminated with Zn and Cd. Endophytic bacterial counts were determined in roots and shoots, and isolates were grouped by random amplified polymorphic DNA and identified by 16S ribosomal RNA (rRNA) gene sequencing. Endophytes were further characterized for the production of plant growth-promoting (PGP) substances, such as NH3, siderophores, indol-3-acetic acid (IAA), hydrogen cyanide and extracellular enzymes, and for the capacity to solubilize phosphate…

Environmental impact of phytic acid in Maize (Zea mays. L) genotypes for the identification of stable inbreds for low phytic acid.

Phytic acid is a ubiquitous compound that chelates the micronutrients in food and hinder their absorption. Hence, breeding for low phytate content for producing stable low phytic acid (lpa) hybrids is essential. Phytic acid content in maize grains has been found to vary across environments and its stable expression has yet to be explored. In a view of this, forty inbreds were screened with two checks viz., CO-6 and CO-H(M)-8 across three locations. Twenty morphological and three quality traits were observed to identify the stable lines for low phytic acid with higher free inorganic phosphorous

Comparative study of the effects of different chelating ligands on the absorption and transport of mercury in maize (Zea mays L.).

Mercury (Hg) pollution seriously threatens food safety and has attracted global attention. Phytoextraction, due to its low cost, applicability, and environmental friendliness, is considered a new technology for clean-up of heavy metal contamination in the environment. However, the low bioavailability of Hg in polluted areas greatly limits the applicability of phytoextraction. Here, we compared the effects of six common chelating ligands on the absorption and transport of Hg in maize (Zea mays L.), which has a high biomass and short growth cycle. The results showed that the root length and biom…

Weed control, maize (Zea mays L.) metabolism, and rhizosphere microbiome of hollow mesoporous silica nanoparticles loaded with S-metolachlor and ZnO quantum dots.

BACKGROUND: Conventional pesticide formulations employ large amounts of organic solvents, raising concerns regarding their environmental contamination, pesticide residues, and potential toxicity to non-target organisms. Hollow mesoporous silica nanoparticles (HMSNs) are non-toxic to both animals and plants, making them a suitable candidate for pesticide loading and delivery studies. RESULTS: HMSNs with an average particle size of 165 nm were synthesized using a self-template method. Fluorescein isothiocyanate was successfully conjugated to the HMSNs to enable the investigation of their transp

Assessment of agronomic traits in fall armyworm (Spodoptera frugiperda) resistant maize (Zea mays) hybrids grown in the derived savanna agro-ecology of Nigeria.

Maize production in Nigeria has increased in recent years, but fall armyworm infestation remains a major constraint to high productivity, particularly during the minor cropping season. Twenty-six fall armyworm-resistant maize hybrids and six commercial checks were evaluated for grain yield and other traits using an 8 × 4 alpha-lattice design with three replications. Data collected at key growth stages and harvesting were analyzed using R statistical software version 4.4.2. Hybrids exhibited significant (p < 0.05) differences for grain yield, plant aspect, ear aspect, southern corn leaf blight,

Photosynthesis induction varies along the canopies of Zea mays and Sorghum bicolor: linking fast responses and non-photochemical quenching relaxation to biomass production.

Light variability throughout the canopy requires sophisticated control for the induction of photosynthesis and deactivation of photoprotective mechanisms, which could optimize CO2 assimilation and crop yield. This study aimed to investigate the genotypic variation in photosynthesis induction and the relaxation of non-photochemical quenching (NPQ) across the canopy of five Zea mays and Sorghum bicolor cultivars. CO2 uptake, stomatal conductance, and NPQ dynamics were recorded every 60 s during photosynthetic induction. Initially, leaves at the top, middle and bottom canopy positions were dark-a…

Synergistic effect of antioxidant system and osmolyte in hydrogen sulfide and salicylic acid crosstalk-induced heat tolerance in maize (Zea mays L.) seedlings.

Salicylic acid (SA), is a plant hormone with multifunction that is involved in plant growth, development and the acquisition of stress tolerance. Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is emerging similar functions, but crosstalk between SA and H2S in the acquisition of heat tolerance is not clear. Our recent study firstly reported that SA treatment enhanced the activity of L-cysteine desulfhydrase (L-DES), a key enzyme in H2S biosynthesis, followed by induced endogenous H2S accumulation, which in turn improved the heat tolerance of maize seedlings. (1) In addition, NaHS, a H2S donor, enhanced SA-induced heat

Early transcriptome analyses of Z-3-Hexenol-treated zea mays revealed distinct transcriptional networks and anti-herbivore defense potential of green leaf volatiles.

Green leaf volatiles (GLV), which are rapidly emitted by plants in response to insect herbivore damage, are now established as volatile defense signals. Receiving plants utilize these molecules to prime their defenses and respond faster and stronger when actually attacked. To further characterize the biological activity of these compounds we performed a microarray analysis of global gene expression. The focus of this project was to identify early transcriptional events elicited by Z-3-hexenol (Z-3-HOL) as our model GLV in maize (Zea mays) seedlings. The microarray results confirmed previous st…

Genome-Wide Identification of the Maize TALE Gene Family and Their Expression Analysis Under Low-Phosphorus Response in Maize (Zea mays L.).

The three-amino-acid-loop-extension (TALE) gene family encodes a group of plant-specific homeodomain transcription factors that play indispensable roles in plant growth, development, and adaptation to environmental stresses. Although TALE genes have been extensively investigated in several plant species, their genome-wide characteristics and potential functions in maize, particularly in response to phosphorus deficiency, remain poorly understood. In the present study, a comprehensive genome-wide identification and characterization of the maize TALE gene family were conducted using bioinformati
