Financial toxicity on treatment outcomes in head & neck cancer patients undergoing radiation therapy.

BACKGROUND: Financial toxicity, defined as hardship from medical costs, is an emerging concept in healthcare. Here we define financial toxicity in head and neck cancer patients receiving radiation, identify risk factors, and determine associations with HRQoL, treatment morbidity, and survival. METHODS: We conducted a prospective study on consecutive patients referred to a tertiary referral center for radiation therapy for head and neck malignancies (July 2021-June 2023). Patients provided consent and were assessed using validated patient-reported outcome measures for financial toxicity (FACIT

Assessment of lower urinary tract symptoms and their impact on quality of life following radiation therapy for bladder cancer.

BACKGROUND: Radiation therapy is a common treatment modality for muscle-invasive bladder cancer (BC). Unfortunately, approximately 5 - 10% of treated patients suffer from long-term complications, such as radiation cystitis. While radiation cystitis initially causes urinary symptoms, it can progress to chronic late effects over time. This treatment may have significant physical and psychological implications for cancer survivors. METHODS: This prospective, observational multicenter study was conducted in Denmark from 2020 to 2023. Male patients undergoing radiation treatment for BC were includ

Radiation Dose of Abdominal and Lung Computed Tomography Based on Body Mass Index as an Indicator.

BACKGROUND: Radiation dose generated from computed tomography (CT) has drawn more attention to diagnostic radiology. It is a known fact that the risk of radiation-induced cancer is increasing, thereby necessitating the optimisation of dose in CT protocols. This study focused on determining the radiation dose of CT scans for the abdomen and lung using a 64-slice CT scanner to evaluate their correlation with body mass index (BMI). The objective of the study was to critically evaluate the relationship between BMI and radiation dose metrics in both CT lung and CT abdomen examinations. METHODS: Da

Radiation exposure in patients with inflammatory bowel disease.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Radiological imaging is crucial for diagnosing and monitoring patients with inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD). With increasing awareness of radiation risks, imaging doses should be "as low as reasonably achievable," with a risk level that one should try to stay underneath 75 mSv. However, real-world data on cumulative exposure are limited. We retrospectively analyzed the radiation exposure of patients with IBD in a Belgian tertiary referral center. METHODS: Radiation exposure examinations were reviewed using the electronic health records. Annual (AED) and cumulative effec

Comparing Monarch Versus Ion Robotic-Assisted Bronchoscopy Platforms: A Propensity Score-Matched Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related deaths. Earlier detection and diagnosis are crucial in improving overall survival. Limitations in conventional bronchoscopic biopsy techniques have prompted the development of robotic-assisted bronchoscopy (RAB) platforms. Among the RAB platforms, we report the first study comparing outcomes between the Ion and Monarch platforms. METHODS: In this single-center retrospective study, data were collected from adults (age>18 y) who underwent a RAB biopsy with the Monarch (11/23/21 to 3/10/23) or by the Ion (3/21/23 to 12/15/23). Intensity-modulated proton radiotherapy spares musculoskeletal structures in regional nodal irradiation for breast cancer: a dosimetric comparison.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Regional nodal irradiation (RNI) for breast cancer delivers radiation in proximity to the shoulder and torso, and radiation exposure may contribute to long-term upper extremity and postural morbidity. To date, no studies have assessed the differential dosimetric impact of proton versus photon radiation on shoulder and torso anatomy. This study examined clinically relevant musculoskeletal (MSK) structures and assessed the dose delivered with each modality. PATIENTS/MATERIAL AND METHODS: Ten MSK structures were contoured on IMPT (intensity-modulated proton therapy) and V
