E-learning is a burden for the deaf and hard of hearing.

When considering deaf and hard of hearing (DHH) population, research recognizes that fatigue due to communication challenges and multi-focal attention allocation is a significant concern. Given the putative heightened demands of distance learning on deaf and hard of hearing students, we investigate how an online environment might differently affect deaf and hard of hearing participants, compared to hearing participants, Portuguese Sign Language (PSL) users and non-users. Our findings show that the deaf and hard of hearing group present higher values in the post-task fatigue rates with signific

Deaf community views on paediatric cochlear implantation.

There are two models used in the literature to describe those who are d/Deaf: the medical and the cultural models. The medical model describes deafness as an unwanted disability that needs to be treated through the use of medical devices like cochlear implants (CIs). The cultural model describes the word "Deaf" (written with a capital) as a culture and membership of the Deaf community as a privilege. It also places emphasis on the importance of sign language in Deaf culture. Historically, the Deaf community has been opposed to cochlear implantation in children, but little is known about curren…

Implications of a Sight Word Intervention for Deaf Students.

The effectiveness of a sight word intervention designed for Deaf students was investigated. Thirty students, grades 1-7, in an urban school for the Deaf received an 8-month intervention. A pretest/posttest design using a teacher-designed instrument, the Cumulative Bedrock Literacy Sight Word Assessment, and the Test of Silent Word Reading Fluency (Mather, Hammill, Allen, & Roberts, 2004) assessed increases in the number of sight words students could identify and the rate at which they could identify them. Paired-samples and independent-samples t tests and Pearson product-moment correlation

Enhanced tactile identification of musical emotion in the deaf.

Functional neuroimaging studies have demonstrated that following deafness, auditory regions can respond to tactile stimuli. However, research to date has not conclusively demonstrated the behavioral correlates of these functional changes, with most studies showing normal-like tactile capabilities in the deaf. It has recently been suggested that more cognitive and complex tactile processes, such as music perception, could help to uncover superior tactile capabilities in the deaf. Indeed, following deafness music seems to be perceived through vibration, but the extent to which they can perceive …

The Tip of the Iceberg in Maternally Inherited Diabetes and Deafness.

Maternally inherited diabetes and deafness (MIDD) is not only a disorder of the pancreas and ears but a multisystem mitochondrial disorder syndrome. Hypogonadism, however, has not been reported as a phenotypic feature of MIDD. We report a single case of a patient with MIDD which manifested clinically at 41 years old. In addition to diabetes and deafness, he manifested with seizures, ataxia, myopathy, and hypogonadism. We used established methods for the routine workup of this patient. MIDD is indeed a multisystem condition. A previously undescribed phenotypic feature of MIDD may be hypogonadis…

Bilateral Deafness as a Complication of the Vaccination-A Case Report.

The vaccination has much profit for an infectious disease. On the other hand, there is little frequency, side effects may appear. It includes severe complication. We reported the case that resulted in bilateral acute profound hearing loss after mumps alone and measles and rubella (MR) vaccination. The case was a 5 years old girl. She inoculated mumps alone and MR vaccine. After 18days later, both sides profound hearing loss occurred in her. The hearing loss was not improved by the intravenous feeding of the steroid. Three months later, cochlea implantation was carried out to her right ear. She

An fMRI study of perception and action in deaf signers.

Since the discovery of mirror neurons, there has been a great deal of interest in understanding the relationship between perception and action, and the role of the human mirror system in language comprehension and production. Two questions have dominated research. One concerns the role of Broca's area in speech perception. The other concerns the role of the motor system more broadly in understanding action-related language. The current study investigates both of these questions in a way that bridges research on language with research on manual actions. We studied the neural basis of observing

Hepatitis B and C in a Brazilian deaf community.

INTRODUCTION: Although deaf people are exposed to hepatitis B and C risk factors, epidemiological studies regarding these diseases in deaf people are lacking. METHODS: After watching an explanatory digital versatile disc (DVD) in Brazilian Sign Language, 88 deaf people were interviewed and tested for hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg), hepatitis B surface antibody (anti-HBs), hepatitis B core antibody (anti-HBc), and hepatitis C virus antibody (anti-HCV). RESULTS: The prevalence of hepatitis B markers was 8%; they were associated with incarceration and being born outside the State of São Pa

Hearing damage and deafness: a role for the circadian clock.

Severe noise can cause permanent hearing damage. A recent study now shows that the capacity to recover from noise damage varies with time of day, driven by circadian clock control of a nerve growth factor (BDNF) in the inner ear.

Auditory hallucinations in a deaf patient: a case report.

This case report describes the progression of symptoms in a young deaf female. Her initial psychotic symptoms occur at the age of 16, but she did not come into contact with a psychiatric treatment facility before the age of 27, where she felt symptoms were distressing. The case report describes the difficulties in evaluating psychotic symptoms in a deaf patient, as well as the use of specialized scales in combination with the standard psychiatric evaluation. The current evidence, concerning the prevalence of psychotic symptoms, as well as the influence of deafness on the understanding of psych…

Evaluation of deaf children in a large series in Turkey.

OBJECTIVE: Evaluation of the deafness etiology, ear examination findings and hearing levels of deaf children in a large series. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We studied 840 deaf primary school children (486 male, 354 female, mean age 12.69+/-3.52, range 5-22). A questionaire investigating the prenatal, perinatal and postnatal etiological causes was prepared and pedigree analysis was performed. After ENT examination, odyologic tests were performed. RESULTS: The etiological features of deafness were found for genetic causes as 429 cases (51.1%), 127 children (15.1%) for acquired group and 284 children…

Macrothrombocytopenia and progressive deafness is due to a mutation in MYH9.

BACKGROUND: In 1992, a family with hereditary macrothrombocytopenia and progressive sensorineural hearing impairment without renal dysfunction was described. Recently, mutations in MYH9, a nonmuscle myosin heavy chain, have been found in several forms of hereditary macrothrombocytopenia. HYPOTHESIS: The hereditary macrothrombocytopenia and hearing loss in the previously reported family is due to a mutation in MYH9 gene. METHODS: Genomic DNA was extracted from the affected proband. Mutation screening of all MYH9 coding exons was carried out using denaturing high-performance liquid chromatogra

The use of electroglottography in the treatment of deaf adolescents with puberphonia.

Electroglottography (EGG) was used as a visual feedback tool in the treatment of four male profoundly deaf adolescents of 15 years of age with puberphonia. A laryngograph, oscilloscope, computer, and laryngostroboscope were used for this research. The EGG was used during phonopedic exercises, which consisted of the patient producing voiced coughing in modal register and extended these into prolonged vowels. The investigation showed that EGG facilitated the production of vocal fold vibration in the modal register. It was concluded that EGG was highly effective in changing the production of voca

The causes and prevalence of pre-school deafness in Ghana.

A study to determine the causes of deafness was done in Kumasi in central Ghana. A total of 128 deaf children aged between 1-5 years referred to the Ear, Nose and Throat clinic at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) were seen from January 1992 to June 1993. The procedure adopted included exploration and assessment of individual medical history, otoscopy, pre-audiometric and audiometric evaluation. It turns out that 66(51.5%) had congenital sensorineural hearing loss (CSHL), while the remaining 62(48.5%) had acquired sensorineural hearing loss (ASHL). Of the 66 congenital cases, 44 was du…

The WHO programme for the prevention of deafness and hearing impairment.

The WHO Programme for the Prevention of Deafness and hearing Impairment (PDH) was established in 1987 to deal with causes of avoidable hearing loss, particularly in developing countries. The Programme is developing its strategies on the basis of essential ear care as part of primary health care, and the collection of epidemiologically sound data on ear disease and hearing impairment. A uniform Ear Examination Form is being finalized, for use in field surveys. The PDH Programme suffers from not having adequate resources available, and few countries have so far taken on the prevention of deafnes…

[Products of acoustic distortion in the examination of deafness in an infant].

Distortion-product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAEs) are otoacoustic emissions evoked by two pure tones. The greatest advantage of DPOAEs is their frequency specificity with respect to the eliciting bitonal stimuli. The purpose of this study was to compare DPOAEs in two populations. This paper reports input/output DPOAEs functions and DPOAE-audiograms for audiometric frequencies of f2 between 696 and 6006 Hz in a normal neonate population and in an adult control group. Fifteen healthy fullterm newborns (29 ears) and 8 normal-hearing adults (16 ears) participated as subjects. Results at medium fre

Aetiology, prevalence and diagnosis of deafness in dogs and cats.

Peripheral deafness may be inherited or acquired, congenital or later-onset, and sensorineural or conductive. The most commonly observed forms are inherited congenital sensorineural, acquired later-onset sensorineural (ototoxicity, presbycusis) and acquired later-onset conductive (chronic otitis externa/media). In most dog and cat breeds inherited congenital sensorineural deafness results from perinatal degeneration of the stria vascularis, the vascular bed of the outer wall of the cochlear duct, which leads to hair cell degeneration. The strial degeneration appears to result from the absence …
