Head Impact Situations in Professional Football (Soccer).

To assess head impact incidents (HIIs) and to distinguish diagnosed head injuries from other incidents, a video observation analysis of match HIIs was conducted in the German Bundesliga (2017/18 season). Video recordings of each match were screened to identify the respective events. Head injury data were identified by a prospective injury registry. HII and head injury incidence rates (IR) were calculated with 95% CIs. The total number of HIIs was 1,362 corresponding to an IR of 134.9/1000 match hours (95% CI 127.9–142.2). In 123 HII (IR 12.2, 95% CI 10.2–14.5) the contact was classified as sev

Maxillofacial injuries in the multiply injured.

A survey of patients with maxillofacial injuries (MFI) was carried out in a triaged cohort of multiply injured patients (n = 802) evacuated from accident scenes by the helicopter emergency medical service (HEMS). Despite intubation at accident scenes, some patients required further airway protection on arrival at hospital. One hundred and ninety-six patients (24.5%) had MFI and 90 (11.2%) were classified as severe with ISS of facial region > 2 or more severe (ISS up to 16, median 4). The latter group were commonly found to be associated with other severe injuries (median ISS of 36) leading to …

Helmets for preventing injury in motorcycle riders.

BACKGROUND: Motorcycle crash victims form a high proportion of those killed or injured in road traffic crashes. Injuries to the head, follow … equired to determine the effects of helmets and different helmet types on mortality, head, neck and facial injuries. However, the findings suggest that global efforts to reduce road traffic injuries may be facilitated by increasing helmet use by motorcyclists.

Study on facial motoneuronal death after proximal or distal facial nerve transection.

BACKGROUND: Among the cranial nerves, the facial nerve is most liable to be damaged. Pathologic changes in the facial motor nucleus (FMN) after nerve injury are not well recognized, and the optimal time for facial nerve reconstruction after axotomy is controversial. In this study, to clarify the pathologic change in the FMN after axotomy and to determine the best time for surgery, facial motoneuronal death was investigated after facial nerve injury. METHODS: Sixty Wistar rats were divided into proximal and distal groups. In the proximal group, the right facial nerve was transected at the poru

Facial Nerve Conduction Block during Vestibular Schwannoma Surgery: A Rare and Unclarified Transient Neural Dysfunction.

Preservation of facial nerve function while achieving sufficient tumor removal is a key objective in vestibular schwannoma surgery, and continuous facial nerve monitoring provides real-time, quantitative, and functional assessment of facial nerve during resection. In our experiences of more than 1,900 vestibular schwannoma surgeries, we have occasionally observed an abrupt and marked decrease in monitoring amplitude without any high-risk manipulation such as direct nerve dissection. This rare phenomenon, illustrated by 2 recent cases in this study, was transient or unrelated to postoperative f

Overexpression of Foxc1 regenerates crushed rat facial nerves by promoting Schwann cells migration via the Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway.

Facial paralysis can result in severe implications for patients. A good prognosis depends on the degree of nerve regeneration. Schwann cells (SCs) play an important role in facial nerve development and regeneration through migration. Forkhead box C1 (Foxc1), a member of the forkhead transcription factor family, is implicated in cell migration. However, the role of Foxc1 in the progression after facial nerve crush remains unknown. Our aim was to evaluate the effect of Foxc1 overexpression on SC migration and recovery of facial nerves after crush injury. The rat facial nerve crush injury model w

A blow to the nose: common injury requiring skillful management.

The physician who initially examines the patient with a nasal or facial injury should thoroughly inspect the external and internal aspects of the nose and also evaluate the facial bones. General anesthesia may be necessary in examining children. Although roentgenograms of the nose and facial bones are usually obtained in cases of nasal injury, they rarely influence treatment. Treatment goals should be to maintain or restore satisfactory function and to ensure a good cosmetic result. The patient (or parents) should be advised to be alert to possible delayed abnormalities from the injury.

Post-traumatic and postoperative peripheral paralysis of the facial nerve.

Forty-five patients with postoperative or post-traumatic paresis of the facial nerve were studied and it was found that in only 2.6% of the postoperative cases was there some temporary facial nerve palsy, while in 11% of the cases with facial lacerations the paralysis was permanent. The preauricular area was the most hazardous, while in the submental area no paresis was recorded. It is our opinion that (excluding the preauricular area) when designing a surgical approach to the face, no particular attention need be paid to the preservation of terminal branches of the facial nerve as no permanen

The incidence of head/neck/orofacial injuries in non-elite Australian football.

Injuries to the head/neck/orofacial region are common in contact and collision sports such as Australian Football. A total of 294 players who did not wear headgear from 23 teams from a large metropolitan community football league in Victoria, Australia, were monitored for head/neck/orofacial injuries over one playing season. This short report describes the incidence of head/neck/orofacial injuries in this cohort. Overall, there were 37 head/neck/orofacial injuries reported at a rate of 2.6 injuries/1000 participation hours. Over 70% of these were the result of being struck by another player th…

Trends in the last decade of maxillofacial trauma in England.

Injuries to the face, mouth and jaws are common presentations to UK hospitals. Understanding the current volume of work and the recent changes can yield important lessons for the teams that deal with facial injuries. We examined the Hospital Episode Statistics (HES) covering England for the financial reporting years ending in 2015-2024 for relevant diagnoses and procedures undertaken during hospital admissions. A significant reduction in activity in many areas due to COIVD-19 was found. We report on the change between average volumes of activity in the years ending 2015-17, compared with the y…

Management of neck and head injuries.

The horse, a flight animal that is used extensively by man, frequently receives injuries to its neck or head that result mostly from its management and handling. Better facilities, training of the horse, and horsemanship skills of the handler could prevent many of these injuries. Because many body systems can be involved, with potentially major consequences regarding health, performance, and appearance, early recognition of trauma and competent treatment are crucial. Progress has been made in the treatment of some tracheal and esophageal injuries. Severe tracheal trauma and rupture of the esop

Clinical management of injuries to the maxilla, mandible, and alveolus.

Facial bone and especially mandibular fractures are injuries in which first aid and management of late complications require dental professionals, and consequently all dentists should be familiar with the modern principles of their treatment. Tooth involvement is common in mandibular and maxillary fractures and can require more treatment than does the jaw fracture. Nonsurgical treatment of bone fractures involves immobilization, which for the facial bones is achieved with maxillomandibular fixation (MMF) using dental fixed arch bars. Hence, associated tooth injuries are difficult or impossible
