Intrauterine growth restriction and sugar consumption at two years of age in the BRISA cohort.

BACKGROUND: Alterations in insulin sensitivity in the fetus during pregnancy have been associated with IUGR and future increases in sweet food cravings. OBJECTIVE: To analyze the association between intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) and sugar consumption at two years of age in the BRISA cohort. METHODS: Data from the pre-natal study and the follow-up of the BRISA cohort in the second year of life were used. The outcome assessed was sugar consumption, using three indicators: total energy from sugars, total grams of sugars and % of energy from sugars, analyzed continuously using a 24-hour

The Swedish epidemic of coeliac disease explored using an epidemiological approach--some lessons to be learnt.

Sweden has experienced an epidemic of symptomatic coeliac disease that has no likeness anywhere else in the world. This is quite unique for … societal changes in national dietary recommendations and the food content of industrially produced infant foods. Thus, these changes over time in infant feeding practices had a large public health impact. In fact, when the Swedish epidemic began, the increase in incidence rate was larger in girls than in boys, as was the decrease during the post-epidemic per …

An assessment of thimerosal use in childhood vaccines.

BACKGROUND: On July 7, 1999, the American Academy of Pediatrics and the US Public Health Service issued a joint statement calling for removal of thimerosal, a mercury-containing preservative, from vaccines. This action was prompted in part by a risk assessment from the Food and Drug Administration that is presented here. METHODS: The risk assessment consisted of hazard identification, dose-response assessment, exposure assessment, and risk characterization. The literature was reviewed to identify known toxicity of thimerosal, ethylmercury (a metabolite of thimerosal) and methylmercury (a simi

Urinary concentrations of non-essential and essential elements during weaning in infants from the NELA cohort in Spain.

Infancy is a period of continuous growth and development, where inadequate intake of essential elements and exposure to non-essential elements may have lifelong health consequences. Thus, the aim of this study is to evaluate the urine concentration of essential and non-essential elements as a proxy for internal exposure during the weaning period, from 3 to 18 months of age. The Nutrition in Early Life and Asthma (NELA) birth cohort generated the data for this study. Sociodemographic, dietary, and urine concentration of essential (Co, Cu, Mo, I, Fe, Mn, Se, Zn, and Ni) and non-essential element

The Effects of Diet on Regional Adiposity Measured via Ultrasound in Full-Term Infants: A Systematic Review.

CONTEXT: While total body fat is an important metric of infant growth, regional adiposity may provide more clinically relevant information for predicting metabolic health risk compared with total body fat alone. Regional adiposity assessment in infants remains limited, in part due to historical challenges in accurately and safely assessing adiposity in early life. Ultrasonography has emerged as a practical and non-invasive assessment method to examine the impact of infant diet on fat distribution. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to systematically review the existing evidence on the

Impact of maternal metabolic abnormalities in pregnancy on human milk and subsequent infant metabolic development: methodology and design.

BACKGROUND: Childhood obesity is on the rise and is a major risk factor for type 2 diabetes later in life. Recent evidence indicates that abnormalities that increase risk for diabetes may be initiated early in infancy. Since the offspring of women with diabetes have an increased long-term risk for obesity and type 2 diabetes, the impact of maternal metabolic abnormalities on early nutrition and infant metabolic trajectories is of considerable interest. Human breast milk, the preferred food during infancy, contains not only nutrients but also an array of bioactive substances including metabolic

Anaphylaxis in infancy: An area that needs to be highlighted.

Anaphylaxis, the most severe end of the spectrum of allergic reactions, has shown increasing incidence globally over recent years. This hypersensitivity reaction can occur at any age, including infancy. Recent data, although scarce, show that anaphylaxis is increasingly reported in infancy, with food identified as the leading cause of anaphylaxis cases in this age group. Infants constitute a unique subgroup with specific challenges regarding diagnosis of anaphylaxis due to a variety of factors, such as lack of age-specific diagnostic criteria, inability of infants to describe their symptoms, a

Assessment of Dietary Intake of Iodine and Risk of Iodine Deficiency in Children with Classical Galactosaemia on Dietary Treatment.

Iodine is an essential mineral required for the synthesis of thyroid hormones. Iodine plays a critical role in growth and neurocognitive development. Classical galactosaemia is a disorder resulting from an inborn error in galactose metabolism. Its current management consists of life-long lactose and galactose dietary restriction. This study estimated dietary intakes of iodine in infants and children with classical galactosaemia in the Republic of Ireland. The diets of 43 participants (aged 7 months-18 years) with classical galactosaemia were assessed for iodine intake using an iodine-specific

Infant Feeding Practices and Weight Gain in Toddlers Born Very Preterm: A Pilot Study.

PURPOSE: Long-term consequences of prematurity are a public health concern. A pattern of slow initial weight gain followed by a period of rapid weight gain has been associated with poor cardiometabolic health outcomes. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationships between infant feeding practices and weight gain in a sample of 18-to-24-month olds corrected age born very preterm. DESIGN AND METHODS: A cross-sectional design was used to examine the relationships between infant feeding practices and weight gain. Estimates of effect sizes and model fit estimates were the primary para

Manganese exposure assessment in formula-fed infants in Israel.

BACKGROUND: Proper nutrition is fundamental to the regular mental and physical development of infants, toddlers, and children. Overexposure to manganese (Mn) in infants has been correlated to various behavioral and neurological symptoms such as lower IQ, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, and impairment in fine motor skills. The following study aims to evaluate exposure to Mn in formula-fed infants in Israel from birth to nine months of age. METHODS: Over 200 infant formulas of multiple brands were sampled by the Israeli National Food Service, as part of a routine monitoring of levels

The effectiveness of habit reversal therapy in the treatment of Tourette syndrome and other chronic tic disorders: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Infections induced by Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC), especially non-O157 serogroups like O145, pose considerable public health risks. Household transmission is crucial in the dissemination of STEC, particularly in settings characterized by close interaction, such as extended families. This study examines a case of a 5-month-old infant with hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS) attributed to stx1c-positive STEC and analyzes transmission patterns within the household. METHODS: Perianal swab samples were obtained from a 5-month-old infant diagnosed with STEC-associated HUS

Vitamin B12 deficiency in an infant with neurological and hematological findings: A case report.

KEY CLINICAL MESSAGE: It is important for pregnant and breastfeeding women who adhere to a strict vegetarian diet to take appropriate steps to avoid vitamin B12 deficiency in their infants. ABSTRACT: Vitamin B12 deficiency is rare during infancy. The initial symptoms of this deficiency are subtle and may include irritability, failure to thrive with a decline in growth rate, apathy, anorexia, refusal of solid foods, megaloblastic anemia, and developmental regression. The case presented here involves an 8-month-old male infant who showed neurological symptoms such as decreased activity, increas

Evaluating the pathways linking complementary feeding practices to obesity in early life.

The complementary feeding period, when solids and liquids other than breast milk and formula are added to the infant diet, is an important development window shaping infant growth and weight gain, metabolic development, and lifelong eating practices. Yet, relatively little is known about how the timing and types of foods offered to infants at this stage may shape their growth and subsequent risk of developing obesity. This narrative review describes the existing literature on complementary feeding practices, discusses potential biological and behavioral pathways linking complementary feeding p

Use of propranolol in a remote region of rural Guatemala to treat a large facial infantile haemangioma.

We present a female infant with a right-sided facial and neck haemangioma, from a remote, resource-poor community in rural Guatemala. She received first-line treatment, propranolol, with marked reduction in tumour size and erythema. Treatment was stopped after 35 weeks due to recurrent diarrhoea and sustained weight loss. Propranolol can be used to safely treat infants with haemangiomas in remote, rural communities if there is adequate follow-up, education and communication. Periocular haemangiomas should be treated promptly to avoid visual impairment. Infants with large facial haemangiomas sh

[Neonatal infection with Listeria monocytogenes: rare, but serious].

Between 1993 and 2003, three infants, two girls and a boy, were found to have an invasive infection with Listeria monocytogenes. They received intensive care including respiratory and circulatory support, antibiotics, and treatment of the neurological complications when possible. One of the girls survived without sequelae but the other two infants died in the neonatal period. In one of these two cases there was a clear clue to the source of the infection in the dietary history of the mother: she had consumed unpasteurised cow's milk. The mothers ofthe infants that died had developed fever shor

Animal- and Plant-Source Protein-Rich Foods Differ in Their Association With Maternal Micronutrient Status and Breast Milk Composition During Lactation.

Micronutrient deficiencies in lactating women remain widespread and under-addressed, compromising maternal health and breast milk quality. Although dietary guidelines promote protein-rich foods, most do not distinguish between animal and plant sources within this food group, despite differences in nutrient profiles and bioavailability. This study examined associations between intake of animal-source and plant-source foods within the protein-rich food group and maternal nutritional biomarkers in blood and breast milk. Nutrient contributions from each source and intake patterns across sociodemog

Food allergy and the potential allergenicity-antigenicity of microparticulated egg and cow's milk proteins.

Approximately 3-4 million Americans experience food allergic reactions at some time in their lives. In the pediatric population, eggs and milk are most frequently implicated in food allergic reactions. The most well-understood adverse reactions to foods are secondary to the development of IgE antibodies to specific food antigens. Once an individual becomes sensitized (i.e., makes specific IgE antibodies), ingestion of the food may lead to a variety of cutaneous, respiratory, and/or gastrointestinal symptoms, and anaphylactic shock. The use of SDS-PAGE and immunoblot analyses with sera from doc
